Pune, Jan 21: A massive fire broke out at Serum Institute of India in Pune on Thursday afternoon, wire agency reported. The blaze was reported in a building near the Terminal 1 gate of the institute. Five charred bodies recovered, a fire official.

Condoling the loss of lives, Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla said, “We have just received some distressing updates; upon further investigation, we have learnt that there has unfortunately been some loss of life at the incident. We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed.”

Nine persons were evacuated, police said.

Earlier, Poonawalla said there would be no loss of Covishield production due to the fire.

The Serum Institute of India has announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to families of deceased in addition to mandated amount as per norm.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Namrata Patil told PTI the fire broke out at 2.45 pm on the fourth and fifth floor of the SEZ 3 building in the Serum Institute premises. “As per the primary information, nine people have been evacuated,” she said.

As many as 10 fire tenders were rushed to spot to douse the flames. Police and local administration officials immediately reached the site.

“The fire broke in a building in the premises. We have sent water tenders to the spot,” the official said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the official said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the state government has ordered a probe into the fire.

The Manjari facility is where Covishield vaccine, used in the nationwide inoculation drive against the coronavirus pandemic, is made.

Taking to Twitter, Adar Poonawalla wrote earlier in the day, “Thank you, everyone, for your concern and prayers. So far the most important thing is that there have been no lives lost or major injuries due to the fire, despite a few floors being destroyed.”

“I would like to reassure all governments & the public that there would be no loss of #COVISHIELD production due to multiple production buildings that I had kept in reserve to deal with such contingencies at @SerumInstIndia. Thank you very much @PuneCityPolice & Fire Department,” he added.

‘PM Modi, CMs to receive vaccine shots in 2nd round’

New Delhi, Jan 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be vaccinated in the second phase of the Covid inoculation drive launched last week, sources said today. All Chief Ministers, MPs and MLAs above 50 will also receive vaccines.
The vaccine drive was launched on January 16 with healthcare workers and others at the frontline of the coronavirus fight receiving jabs of two vaccines – Serum Institute of India’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

Many states are struggling to meet targets and hesitancy to take vaccines and the fear of side effects are seen to be part of the reason.

In the second phase, it is the turn of those above 50 and people with comorbidities to take shots.

In his meeting with Chief Ministers before the drive, PM Modi had said they did not need to panic or rush to get vaccinated as they would get their turn in the second round.

Chief Ministers of states like Haryana, Bihar and Telangana had reportedly suggested that MLAs, MPs and other public representatives should be considered frontline workers and be vaccinated.
The PM strictly warned anyone against jumping the queue.
But days into what is billed as the world’s biggest vaccination drive, those coming forward to get shots are far short of targets.
NITI Aayog member VK Paul, who heads a government committee on vaccine strategy, said health workers who failed to take vaccine doses meant for them were not fulfilling their “societal responsibility”.
Please understand the whole world is clamouring for vaccines. If our healthcare workers, our doctors and nurses, if they are declining to take it, I feel sorry. I plead with them, on behalf of the government, because we don’t know what shape this pandemic will take going forward,” Mr Paul was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.
The government has reported hospitalisation from side effects in only 0.002% of vaccine recipients. “Adverse events” have been reported in 0.18 per cent of recipients.
Tackling concerns over Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, which is still in Phase 3 clinical trials, the government stressed that both vaccines were safe. (Agencies)
