NIT Srinagar, IIT Jmu to develop joint roadmap to undertake challenges of section-8 companies

Srinagar:  National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal on Tuesday said Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu and NIT Srinagar will develop a joint roadmap to undertake operations of their respective section-8 companies.

Addressing a joint virtual meeting at NIT Srinagar along with heads of IIT Jammu, Dr Sehgal said both institutions have started new section-8 companies as incubation centres to boost the innovational and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The meeting was attended by Director IIT Jammu Dr Manoj Singh Gaur, other dignitaries of both Institutions. The main agenda of the meet was ‘How to generate OPEX funds for successfully running the section 8 companies of both the institutions.

Sehgal said both institutions are nationally reputed and they need to work jointly to support the progress and development of section 8 companies. For running these companies, we need mainly Operating expenses (OPEX) funding and we are exploring new options in it,” he said.

Director NIT Srinagar said they have already established Capital expenditures (CAPEX) on the campus in the form of machines, infrastructure development, workshops, and technological labs. The main problem to run such section 8 companies is OPEX and many options can be explored in this regard, he said.

“In future, the Greenovator Incubation Foundation (GIF) Company can obtain funding through various agencies. The profits will be utilized again in the company to support innovations, startups and develop start-ups,” he said.

On the occasion, Director, IIT Jammu Dr Manoj Singh Gaur said they had already started a section-8 company two months back and they will be exploring more areas.

“We are on the same page that both institutions need operating expenses (OPEX) to tackle future demands of section-8 companies,” Gaur said.

Both the directors stated that in the future course of time they would approach centrally sponsored funding agencies for funds so that section-8 companies will sustain in the long run.

Centre pulls up Delhi govt for its failure at oxygen procurement logistics front

New Delhi: Centre has pulled the Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government for allegedly failing in resolving logistical issues related to the Oxygen procurement for Delhi Hospitals,

In a hard-hitting letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said that Delhi administration’s efforts to resolve “logistical issues for procuring oxygen have not been up to the mark” at a time when other states and union territories have been making earnest and professional efforts in this regard.

Noting that pro-active actions by the Delhi government could have “avoided tragic incidents”, sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), quoting the letter, said, the Union Home Secretary sent the letter on April 25, after that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced that the State administration would import 18 cryogenic tankers from Thailand and 21 ready-to-use oxygen plants from France.

Mentioning about various steps taken by the Central Government like stopping oxygen supply to industries, uninterrupted movement of oxygen tankers, airlifting of tankers from abroad in the letter, Mr Bhalla further said all State Governments and UTs have been making diligent and continuous efforts at their level for the past few days to arrange tankers for the allocated quantity of medical oxygen and a specially designated virtual group was formed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for facilitation.

“However, Delhi government has hardly been able to arrange any tankers so far though many crucial days have passed since the Government of India made allotment of oxygen,” the Union Home Secretary said, while asking Mr Dev to quickly take the required action like in other states.

The Home Secretary also said presently, there has been no shortage of medical oxygen supply and Delhi had been allocated 480 MT on April 21 after consultation with officers of the Delhi government. “However, it has been brought to my notice that Delhi has received less supply than its actual allocation made by the government of India largely due to logistical issues which are not at all addressed by the state government,” Bhalla noted in his letter.

“In these difficult times, it is extremely important that the Central Government and various states and UTs administration need to work in tandem to tackle this COVID crisis to minimise human suffering.

Therefore, I will request you to take urgent, effective, innovative and result-oriented measures like Chief Secretaries of other states and UTs have taken,” Mr Bhalla said in his communication.

Meawhile, Mr Kejriwal today stated that the scrambling for oxygen, which was witnessed last week amid sudden surge in COVID-19 cases, has been addressed to and the situation has improved significantly in the past two days.

He also informed that his government would set up 44 oxygen plants at various hospitals, including 21 that will be imported from France next month, in addition to Centre’s eight oxygen plants, which will be set up by Aril 30. He also mentioned that the Centre has provided five oxygen tankers to Delhi.

Soaring Prices Of Essentials As Covid-19 Surges

Covid-19 continues to bring more challenges every passing day. More people fall victim to the virus while case tally continues to grow rapidly. India logged a record rise of 3,52,991 new cases and 2,812 deaths during the last 24 hours, the health department said on Monday. Jammu and Kashmir also recorded yet another grim milestone as 25 persons succumbed to the virus, highest so far in a single day, and 2172 fresh infections in 24 hours as 1700 hours on April 26. Some experts fear that cases could hit a million daily infections in India next month. The situation is grim as these numbers tell a story which is just a tiny fragment of the misery enveloping the region. While hospitals are getting occupied with those needing critical care, some vast buildings are being turned to covid-19 facilities by the administration. In fact the situation is getting stretched to a breaking point as far the health infrastructure is concerned.  While there is gloom everywhere, some unscrupulous people are taking undue advantage of the situation. At a time when people are facing a hard time due to the mounting virus cases, soaring prices of essential commodities have doubled their woes. People are forced to purchase commodities at whatever prices fixed by the retailers. Fruits and vegetables continue to be sold at exorbitant prices with hardly any takers for the notified rate list by the government.

Complaints galore across Kashmir Valley that people are forced to purchase commodities at prices fixed by the retailers. Not only vegetables and fruits, edible oil prices have virtually gone through the roof with some brands being sold more than 25 percent more than they used to be not so long ago.

It is here that the government should come forward and streamline the markets especially in controlling factors that are associated with pure malpractices by some unscrupulous people. The administration needs to face local challenges with a lot more authority than it is showing or lacking presently. At all levels, the administration is responsible for safeguarding the interest of the common people. There is a full-fledged department, tasked with the duty of managing the prices of essentials. However, there are complaints that the concerned officials are not taking action against the errant which only encourages the former at the peril of consumers. The official machinery needs to step up efforts to give relief to the common consumer.

Containment zones increase as Kashmir records 11 Covid deaths in a day

By: Afaq Bhat
Srinagar: The surge in COVID-19 cases and mortality rate increasing in Srinagar has led to authorities declaring more and more areas as “containment zones.”
A source told Precious Kashmir that “containment zones” are a part of the “smart lockdown” strategy to contain the virus. “Till date there are no directions from the Centre to go for a complete lockdown. The administration has to assess the situation on its own and take a call,” the source added.
The administration on Monday evening declared five more localities of Srinagar city as “micro-containment zones” following a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Ajaz Asad tweeted that five more localities of Srinagar have been declared as containment zones. These localities are: Batamaloo, Nishat, Baghat, Noorbagh and Aloochibagh.
Earlier, Khanyar, Meerakabad Shalimar, Hyder Colony Kill Khan Gali Upper Soura, Buchpora Firdous Colony in Zadibal, Gazaliabad Lane No. 01 HMT, and Shahanwar Colony Lane 02 in Batamaloo were designated as Covid-19 containment zones in order to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
A medico said, “If the life keeps on moving the virus won’t stop it will remain on move. Turning sensitive areas into containment zones can restrict the movement of people as well as the virus. People are rushing towards hospitals but the space is shrinking with each passing day and we don’t know how long hospitals will be able to accommodate the patients.”
An official said, “Besides hospitals more buildings are being identified to be converted into the COVID centers. Oxygen cylinders are being procured to ensure that patients get the support they need. Entire situation is being monitored closely and from May 1 onwards all the adults will be vaccinated. Administration has devised a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the emerging crisis.”
On Monday, Kashmir recorded 11 COVID-19 deaths, sending shockwaves across the summer capital. “Things have turned bad even before the peak has arrived. People will have to take extra precautions to keep themselves safe. They can no more shy away from getting vaccinated. The COVID jabs hold the key,” said another medico.
He said, “If the cases keep on rising sharply, handling the patients will become a difficult job.”

In Covid times analyser at MCH Anantnag remains defunct

Hospital has no X-ray films, patients face hardships

By:Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: In Covid times biochemistry analyser at Maternity and Childcare Hospital (MCH) Anantnag has been defunct for the past one month and X-ray films are not available, forcing patients to get the investigation done at private clinics.

Sources in the hospital said that the bio-chemistry analyser in the hospital nearly a month developed a major snag. Following which the analyser became non-functional, the hospital authorities contacted a private firm, Mediciti, supposed to repair the equipment under the bio-medical maintenance scheme.

The company, sources said, sent a representative to the hospital to check the snag. “He later told the hospital authorities that the machine needs major repairs and will be set right within two or three days. However nearly a month has passed the firm which has a contract with the authorities has failed to set the machine right,” a source said.

The hospital, according to sources, also does not have X ray films for last ten days.

Due to the defunct analyser and non availability of X- ray films , patients visiting the hospital are forced to get these investigations done at private diagnostic centers and laboratories.

Deputy Commissioner Anantnag had also visited the hospital last week and asked the GMC authorities to immediately set right the defunct analyser and make the X-ray films available after some patients complained to him that they were asked to get the X-ray done at GMC or in private.

However, sources said, neither X-ray films were made available nor the analyser was set right as a result of which poor patients continue to suffer.

The MCH is an associated hospital of GMC Anantnag and is one of the overcrowded maternity hospitals in the Valley after Lal Ded hospital in Srinagar.

Medical superintendent, MCH, Mir Ji Indrabi said that they have been conducting tests manually since the analyser is defunct.

“It is the job of the firm to repair the analyser but that is only buying time. We have also sent a requisition to GMC principal for X ray films. Purchasing the same is not in my competence,” the MS said.

Modi discusses Covid situation with Biden, thanks him for aid

New Delhi:  A day after the US agreed to provide India raw materials for Covid vaccines that had previously been under export controls, as well as other key materials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday discussed the Covid situation with US President Joe Biden and thanked him for the support to fight the surging cases in India.

“Had a fruitful conversation with @POTUS @JoeBiden today. We discussed the evolving COVID situation in both countries in detail. I thanked President Biden for the support being provided by the United States to India.

“My discussion with @POTUS @JoeBiden also underscored the importance of smooth and efficient supply chains of vaccine raw materials and medicines. India-US healthcare partnership can address the global challenge of COVID-19,” Modi said in a series of tweets.

The PMO said the two leaders discussed the Covid-19 situation in their countries, including India’s ongoing efforts to contain the second wave “through expedited vaccination efforts, and ensuring supply of critical medicines, therapeutics and healthcare equipment”.

President Biden has said the US is determined to support India’s efforts by quickly deploying resources such as therapeutics, ventilators and identifying sources of raw materials to be made available for the manufacture of Covishield vaccines, it said.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had spoken over phone on Sunday with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, and expressed “deep sympathy for the people of India following the recent spike in Covid-19 cases”, and affirmed America’s solidarity with India, a White House statement had said.

“Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic, the United States is determined to help India in its time of need.

“To this end, the United States is working around the clock to deploy available resources and supplies,” it said.

“The United States has identified sources of specific raw material urgently required for Indian manufacture of the Covishield vaccine that will immediately be made available for India. To help treat Covid-19 patients and protect front-line health workers in India, the United States has identified supplies of therapeutics, rapid diagnostic test kits, ventilators, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that will immediately be made available for India,” it read.

Prayers barred in mosques in North Kashmir village

Srinagar: In the first such explicit order amid rising covid-19 cases, authorities in Gulmarg area of north Kashmir have prohibited congregational prayers in mosques in a village amid reports that the inhabitants give a go by to the appropriate behavior.

“In the larger interest of lives of General public of Village Ferozpora, it is hereby ordered that the congregational prayers in all mosques of the said village shall be strictly prohibited, for a period of one week in the first instance,” reads an order by SDM, a copy of which lies with GNS.

It mentions that the District Magistrate Baramulla (Chairperson DDMA) on April 22 declared Village Ferozpora in Tehsil Tangmarg as Micro-containment zone for containment of Covid-19 disease.

“The mass sampling of the Village was carried out by Medical Block Tangmarg and it has been detected that 21% persons have been tested positive for Covid-19 infections which reflects a sharp surge in the Covid positive cases,” the order reads, adding, “It has been reported that the inhabitants of the village do not follow SOPs/guidelines during the indoor gatherings viz congregational prayers.”

The SDM has underlined that any violation to order shall invite punitive action.

“The Tehsildar Tangmarg and SDPO Tangmarg shall implement the order in letter and spirit,” the order added. (GNS)
