Alleged drug addict ends life in Pulwama

‘Drug addicts are difficult handle even in police lock-ups’

Pulwama, June 14, KNT: Drug addiction can prove fatal sometimes. A drug addict can take his life if he doesn’t find drugs sometimes. An incident took place today in Trichal village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, where an alleged drug addict ended his life after he was unable to find drugs for himself in this Pandemic.

The subject hung himself much to the shock of the people. He is survived by his two little kids. “He was a chronic drug addict and whole village knew about that. I was not expecting this from him. All were shocked in the village after the news spread,” said a local from Trichal village to news agency KNT.   The locals said that drug addiction is a menace in the village. “There are dozens of villages in Pulwama where youth are addicted to drugs. These drug addicts resort to thefts and are sources of menace. They are more nuisance than an asset to this nation,” said a local of the southern district Pulwama.   There are drug addicts and drug peddlers everywhere. Police arrest them but find very difficult to contain them. A police official admitted to news agency KNT that they face too many problems after arresting any drug addict. “Any drug addict after his arrest starts behaving in a strange way. These drug addicts are difficult to handle even in lock-ups. They sometimes start rubbing their bodies, hitting their forehead, slapping their cheeks, crying and demanding drugs for survival. A police officer is always afraid of allowing any drug addict to visit washroom. Committing suicide because of non-availability of drugs is not a big deal for a drug addict,” he said and added that a lot of care is being taken to handle drug addicts in lock-ups.  Meanwhile, a delegation from Kaka Sarai area of Srinagar city visited the KNT office alleging that a retired government employee and his driver are spreading the drug menace in Maidanpora, Tanga Adda area of Kak Sarai. They said that these people are supplying drugs to young boys in broad day light and need to be arrested and contained.  The delegation said that a couple of cases already stand registered against the driver of the retired employee in drug related cases. They appealed police to look into the matter.   When contacted, a police officer assured action against these men saying he will personally look into the matter and will ascertain the facts and claims made by the delegation. COVID-19: Kashmir not out of the woods, people yet to become immune

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, June 14: Life limping back to normal in Kashmir nearly after 3-months have made the experts sound an alarm. They are reiterating that people should be cautious as the COVID-19 has not gone and its very much present in Kashmir.
President of Doctors Association Kashmir, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan, has dropped a bombshell by claiming that Kashmir’s 98% population is susceptible to COVID-19 infection. While quoting a survey, Dr Nisar said that a sero-surveillance study conducted in Pulwama district of Kashmir by ICMR in May revealed that 2 percent of the population surveyed showed antibodies in their blood. “The presence of antibodies means that the person had infection in the recent past and is now immune to the virus,” he said, “The findings of the study show that most of the people are not immune to the disease and herd immunity is still far away.”
Its in place to mention here that the administration has lifted the restrictions from most of the areas in Kashmir and the movement of people from one district to another has commenced. “Many experts are of the opinion that now the threat about virus moving fast is more as the people have started coming out. In this case scenario the transmission of virus from one person to another is very high,” an analyst told Precious Kashmir.
The analyst said that the experts have warned that next wave of the virus could be more deadly.  “There is nothing much that people can do. They can just take precautions like maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks and following social distance,” he added.
The ICMR survey which was conducted across the country has revealed that only 0.73% people are immune to the virus and others haven’t developed any immunity. “The writing on the wall is clear that we have to learn to live with the virus. How many of us will survive the COVID-19 onslaught depends upon our luck. The Union Health Ministry has claimed the recovery rate has increased to 50% across the country. The government is trying to send a message that everything is under control but the number of cases increasing with each passing day have added to the prevailing insecurity,” the analyst added.
Dr Nisar said, “We are not out of woods yet. We are still in it. I don’t want people to think there is no more risk. when people will come out they will catch the disease for sure. They may recover and get immune too.”
An observer said that with too many ifs and buts it appears that coming days are not going to be that easy and there is nothing to rejoice. “The virus is very much present in the environment and it seems in no mood to go. Taking precautions is the only way out,” he added.

India no longer a weak country: Rajnath Singh

‘Revocation of Article 370 led to J&K’s overall development’
New Delhi, June 14: Amid a standoff with China on the Ladakh border, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that India will never compromise on its “national pride”, asserting that it is no longer a “weak” country and that its security capability has increased.
Speaking at a virtual rally for Jammu and Kashmir, Singh also assured the opposition that the central government will not keep Parliament or anyone in the dark about developments on the border and will share details at an appropriate time.
“I want to assure that we will not compromise with national pride under any circumstance. India is no longer a weak India. Our strength in national security has risen. But this strength is not meant to frighten anyone but to secure our country,” Singh said.

The senior BJP leader said China has expressed its wish to resolve the dispute with India through talks, and the Indian government also has a similar view.

“This is also our effort to defuse the tussle between India and China through military and diplomatic level talks,” he said, noting that the two countries are engaged in military level dialogue.

In his speech, he also stated that the annulment of Article 370, which had given the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir a special status, has led to all round development in the union territory.

The government will carry out so much development in the region in the coming years that people of in other Kashmir will demand to be part of India. This will lead to the fulfilment of our Parliament”s resolution that entire Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, Singh said.
