Markets abuzz with Eid shoppers, prices of essentials very high

Srinagar, July 30: Markets remained abuzz for the second day on Thursday with Eid-ul-Azha shoppers in Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where prices of essentials — including goats and sheep for quarbani (sacrifice) besides meat — remained high.

Public transport remained off the roads and all shrines and mosques remained closed. However, private vehicles were seen plying in large numbers on the roads, leading to frequent traffic jams at several places.

The administration in Srinagar had relaxed lock down restrictions for two days from Wednesday to allow people to purchase essentials for the festival being celebrated on August 1. Only essential service shops and other business establishments were ordered to function from 9 am to 6 pm daily. But, other businessmen too were seen doing their normal business.

However, sheep and goat sellers, who had come from different parts of the valley and Jammu division were disappointed due to very low sale as compared to last year when there was total curfew after August 5, when centre scrapped Article 370 and divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs).

Though administration has directed people and shopkeepers to wear masks, maintain physical distancing and take other precautions to avoid further spike in COVID-19 cases, in some cases violations could be noticed in the busy markets.

Bakery and confectionary besides meat and chicken shops witnessed heavy rush for the second day today. However, there was no market checking and essentials, particularly meat was being sold at much higher prices against the government rate.

There was heavy rush of shoppers in number of markets, including Gonikhan, Mahraj Bazar, Hari Singh High Street (HSHS, historic Lal Chowk, Batmaloo, Dalgate saw heavy rush of shoppers. There was hardly any physical distancing being maintained while some people, including women, were seen without masks.

Meat was being sold at Rs 600 per kg in majority areas against the government rate of Rs 400. However, in some areas action had been taken against butchers for selling meat on higher rates.

Though the rate of majority vegetables was almost normal, but peas was being sold at Rs 100 per kg.

At Eidgah, where sellers with their sheep and goats had come from different parts of the Kashmir valley and Jammu, said there was a drop of about 80 per cent in the sale this time. A man who had come from Sopore with a 130 kg sheep said it costs Rs 80000. Against the government rate of Rs 220 per kg for sheep, it was being sold at Rs 280 to Rs 300 per kg. A shepherded had come from Poonch said this time the sale is much less.

Covid-19 alone is not devastating lives

Once covid-19 was declared a pandemic and a lockdown imposed, the non-COVID-19 patients g=found care out of reach for them. It is as if the pandemic veiled the J&K from any other disease.  In the beginning, neither the government nor the people, in general, were worried about this. The sense of being overtaken by this pandemic was so devastating that it left no room for consideration about grave consequences. As things unfolded, there is now a realization that dedicating most of the hospitals to covid-19 patients wasn’t such a great idea. Given the limited resource, establishing hospitals at the speed it was done in China could not have been once given a thought by the administration. Whatever is to be done is to be done within the existing infrastructure. However, there is a need to manage efficiently and make a room for routine patients as well.
True there is a spike in covid-19 cases as tally already is well past 19000 mark and death toll inches fast closer to 350 but the concerns for non-covid patients continue to be growing while pandemic is spreading. There are many reports that patients are suffering hugely for there is either no space for them in the hospitals, or they desist going there, fearing they might contract the dreaded disease.  Both these situations are not good, whatever way one looks at them as the patients are suffering, their ailments are worsening, and as such endangers many lives.  Amid this situation, the government cannot look at the other when it comes to making arrangements for regular patients. While finding the solution to such a situation is not an easy one to find but it is not as such where answers cannot be found. The doctors, and other concerned need to be taken on board to find out the solution to this problem. There are serious ailments, like cancer and chronic kidney ailments, which brook no delay. At a time when private clinics are mostly closed if hospitals deny treatment to regular patients, where would these people go? There is a need to designate some hospitals for covid-19 patients and make the rest available for regular patient care. Alternatively, some emergency arrangements should be made for regular patient care. The present situation is not tenable, and the government should seriously get thinking about it. While Covid-19 management cannot be ignored and needs serious focus, J&K cannot afford to ignore other killers as well.

Ruhullah’s resignation jolt for National Conference?

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, July 29: Chief spokesman of National Conference and influential Shia leader from central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Aga Ruhullah, tendering his resignation has jolted Kashmir’s grand old party.
Ruhullah resigned a day after Omar’s Oped appeared in a national daily in which he had stated that he won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K remains a Union Territory.
“I have sent across my resignation from the post of Chief Spokesperson of @JKNC_ . From here on none of my statements should be considered as such,” Ruhullah, who is a three-time former legislator tweeted on Tuesday.
Soon after Ruhullah tendered his resignation, Omar stated that he had never demanded restoration of statehood and he had only stated that he won’t contest the elections. He lashed out at the journalists and commentators “for putting words in his mouth.”

Responding to a tweet which read, ‘chief spokesperson of JKNC resigns from his post as Omar Abdullah demands statehood’, Omar Abdullah said, “Please show me where in my piece or in the interview I’ve demanded statehood.”

“I have no problem being disagreed with for what I say or do but when you invent things & put words in my mouth to attack me then that’s more about you than about me. All you lazy journalists & commentators please show me where I’ve demanded statehood be restored,” Omar had written on twitter.
An analyst while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Someone needs to tell Omar Abdullah that journalists and commentators just commented upon the piece he had written. So how come they are to be blamed for putting the words in his mouth.”
He said, “It seems Omar tested waters by writing a piece in national daily. It appears that he had not thought that one of his party leaders would react so sharply and say goodbye to National Conference.”
It may be recalled that Ruhullah had reacted in a similar manner when his another party colleague and close aide of Omar Abdullah, Tanveer Sadiq had written an article demanding restoration of 4G internet service and J&K’s statehood.
Ruhullah at that point time had said that silence of all the political parties on abrogation of the Article 370 is injustice with the people of Jammu & Kashmir. “It is not only the National Conference which is silent. Every other political party is silent. Honestly speaking, unfortunately the entire society is silent after August 5. This silence is proving counter-productive,” he had stated.
An observer said that since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A, NC has remained intact as none of its leaders shifted their loyalties. “Despite top party leaders being jailed, others remained associated with the party. The NC didn’t crumble like its bête-noire PDP. But Ruhullah’s resignation can open the floodgates. Omar seems to have realized it and he has started talking about J&K’s special status and Centre’s last year’s decision,” he added.
