Second Covid-19 Wave

Some gains have been made as regards containing the spread of covid-19 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Of late, the cases have reduced in numbers with Jammu division recording far lesser cases than the Valley.

Also, there have been comparatively lesser cases in rural areas due to agricultural and horticulture-related activities given the people are confined with their families.

In context with the country, some events have enabled the virus to spread. These have ranged from the opening of markets and big funerals of politicians. Also many people were infected when places of worship were allowed to be thronged.   People are seen giving a go by to various protocols aimed at containing the covid-19 spread. There is very low visibility as regards the wearing of masks. Furthermore, the covid-19 estimations remain a mosaic of data, without a standardised system for testing, tracing and isolation across Jammu and Kashmir. There are questions on employing and more reliance on rapid antigen tests. Some experts openly say that numbers are showing a decline in test positivity rates due to it. There are little efforts by various sectors on spreading health messaging on the dangers of another wave of infections. The J&K government, like many other UTs and States, has been trying to present a picture of near-normality to boost economic activity, highlight recoveries over risk, and people are lowering their guard.

The experts have reiterated time and again that the fight must not weaken until there is an affordable vaccine; they specifically want people to learn to live with an endemic virus.

The emphasis, therefore, has to be on preparing for the new normal, adopting acknowledged defences such as masking, distancing norms and hand hygiene.

The winter season has already arrived in the Valley and advises by the experts, some of them based on scrupulous surveys, would be unwise to be overlooked. The recent upsurge of cases in some countries suggests that the winter will be critical in the fight against the virus.  There are chances that the weather may increase the vulnerability of those with respiratory ailments.

Under such circumstances, the cheapest protection against disease and financial loss is prevention, including for the present and into the near future when vaccine would be available. The people must understand that prevention remains the key while the administration needs to create awareness about the possibility of a second wave.

Kashmiri leaders at loggerheads with New Delhi

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, Oct 22: Revival of political activities in Kashmir has led to the Valley based leaders locking horns with New Delhi.
An analyst while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Since the day PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has been released the political activities appear to have regained momentum in the Valley. But the issues being raised by the Kashmir based leaders seem to have annoyed the people sitting in New Delhi.”
He said, “Since the day NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah said that Article 370 can be restored with China’s help, he has ended up in trouble. He has faced questioning by the Enforcement Directorate twice in connection with the multi-crore scam in Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.”
He said, “Soon after senior Abdullah sought China’s help, BJP’s national spokesman Sambit Patra addressed a news conference in New Delhi and termed Dr Farooq as a traitor. Patra hitting out at Farooq was a hint that the former J&K chief minister has stirred the hornet’s nest.”
Soon after Dr Farooq was questioned, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti termed it as an attempt to prevent Kashmir based leaders from coming together.
An observer said, “New Delhi has allowed the Kashmiri leaders to start the political activities but the lines have been drawn and it’s clear that if politicians cross the line they will end up in trouble.”
He said, “Today, Dr Farooq is facing questioning, tomorrow any other leader could sail in the same boat. As on date the investigating agencies are busy probing the cases which had emerged during the erstwhile political regimes. Kashmir based leaders are caught between the devil and the deep sea as they are aware of the fact that when they were handling the affairs things were not that smooth and anything can fall on them at this point of time.”
A politician said, “Kashmir based leaders are walking on a tightrope. If they abandon their positions and accept the post August 5, 2019 position, it will be like conceding defeat. If they continue to claim that they will get everything back they may end up in more trouble.”
He said, “Since the day Mehbooba Mufti has been released, political activities have increased. NC and PDP have started holding party meetings regularly. Political parties are also reacting to different situations. But these parties will have to strike a balance to keep themselves away from any sort of trouble. In the coming days the picture will become more clear and we will come to know how far the Valley based leaders transcend.”

Flu vaccine lessens risk of dying from COVID-19: DAK

Precious Kashmir News
Srinagar, Oct 22: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Thursday said that the flu vaccine would protect you from severe Covid-19 disease.
“Flu shot would reduce your risk of dying from Covid-19 infection,” said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan said in a statement.
“A study on the elderly population in the United States found that a 10 percent increase in the flu vaccine coverage in an area can reduce Covid mortality in the area by 28 percent,” he said.
DAK President said at least two other studies have indicated that flu shots provide protection against severe Covid-19 infection.
“One of these studies conducted in Italy indicated that areas in which more people took the flu vaccine had a lower death rate from Covid-19 infection,” he said.
“In another study, researchers in Brazil found that a flu shot can reduce mortality by 20 percent when taken before the onset of Covid-19 and about 27 percent when the vaccine was given after the onset of Covid-19,” he added.
Dr Nisar said the flu vaccine trains the immune system of a person to quickly recognize and clear away any harmful organism including those not targeted by the vaccine.
Also, vaccine produces protective neutralizing antibodies and specific T-cell response that could provide cross-protection against Covid-19 infection.
“We could be facing a confluence this winter of a flu pandemic and a still raging Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
“People can catch flu and Covid at the same time and that increases their risk of ending up in ICU or on a ventilator.”
“That makes this year’s flu vaccine vitally important,” Dr Nisar said adding “flu vaccine will reduce the risk of simultaneous infection and reduce the burden on the health care system that is currently struggling from the Covid pandemic.”
“While flu vaccination is recommended for all, it is especially needed in young children, elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions,” he said.

“Ideally, people should get the vaccine by the end of October. However, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season even into January or later,” said Dr Nisar.
