IPL 2021: Sahabaz, Maxwell star in RCB’s six-run win over SRH

Chennai: Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (3/7) and Glenn Maxwell (59 off 41) led Royal Challengers Bangalore to six-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL 2021 match, here on Wednesday.
Put in to bat, Glenn Maxwell’s fifty (59 off 41) helped RCB post a modest total of 149/8 in 20 overs.
Apart from Maxwell, skipper Virat Kohli (33) Shahbaz Ahmed (14) and Kyle Jamieson (12) also made valuable contributions.
In reply, SRH were restricted to 143/9 after 20 overs, losing the match by 6 runs. With this win, RCB moved to the top of the table.
Chasing a modest total, SRH lost opener Wriddhiman Saha (1) cheaply in the beginning of the third over. However, skipper David Warner (54) and Pandey revived SRH innings.
The duo smashed boundaries every over to keep the SRH in the chase as they needed 73 off the last 10 overs.
However, Kyle Jamieson gave RCB the much-needed breakthrough by removing Warner in the 14th over.
After Warner’s dismissal, the required run rate increased after his wicket. Bairstow, Pandey and Samad tried to target Shahbaz Ahmed but mistimed their shots to return to the pavilion in the 17th over.
Vijay Shankar (3) and Jason Holder (4) too struggled as SRH kept on losing wickets. Even Rashid Khan’s 9-ball 18 cameo was not enough to get them over the line. This is SRH’s second loss on the trot while chasing.
Shahbaz Ahmed (3/17) was the star performer for RCB with the ball.
Earlier, RCB were off to a decent start with Kohli and opener Devdutt Padikkal (11) hitting a few boundaries.
However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/30) gave Sunrisers their first breakthrough in the third over off the innings by removing Padikkal. Shahbaz Ahmed was the next to get out after playing a quick cameo, leaving RCB at 47 for two.
At the halfway mark, Maxwell raised the tempo as the big-hitting Australian smashed Shahbaz Nadeem (1/36) for two sixes and a four in the first three balls of the 11th over, with Kohli joining the party with a boundary.
From there on, Kohli and Maxwell joined hands to revive RCB’s innings. The duo tried to up the tempo by hitting some sixes and boundaries.
They stitched a 44-run partnership before Jason Holder got rid of Kohli in the 13th over.
AB de Villiers, who came to bat next, also couldn’t do much as got out to Rashid Khan. The Afghan spinner struck once again, getting rid of Washinton Sundar (8).
RCB suffered lost quick wickets before the death overs which had a major impact on RCB’s final score. Maxwell smashed three fours and a maximum in the last three overs to take RCB to 149/8.
Jason Holder (3/30) and Rashid Khan (2/18) were the top SRH bowlers.

Covid-19 And Joblessness

Over a longer time period, unemployment increased across the globe and covid-19 pandemic only added to the abysmal scenario, as per the latest surveys.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), 114 million jobs were lost in 2020 compared to 2019.

A recent report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) which is sometimes used as a substitute for evaluating the health of the labour market shows that the unemployment spike is not confined to just urban centres. The national unemployment rate and rural joblessness too have gone up sharply in the past several weeks’ especially in the last fortnight.

While the national unemployment rate was 6.65% in the week ended March 28, it went up to 8.58% in the week ended April 11. Rural unemployment rose to 8% from 6.18% in the same period, as per the CMIE latest survey report. The informal sector has been already hit hardest along with retail and hospitality in the formal space. The reason for such a scenario is attributed by the economists to surge in covid-19.

While cases are only rising, it has started to pinch given the fact that the pandemic already hit the global economy hard, increasing poverty in practically every country, reducing employment and pulling people down from middle-income groups into low-income groups and in some cases to the brink of poverty.

Washington-based Pew Research Center in its report on March 18 this year and Oxfam’s report on inequality released earlier this year shine a light on economic travails as does this year’s Global Hunger Index rankings.

The World Bank says that the covid-19 pandemic caused an increase in extreme poverty last year, for the first time in 20 years. All these reports point out the ugly situation and more worse if the pandemic was allowed to a free run as is the case in contemporary times. Controlling the covid-19 pandemic is pivotal for revival of the various sectors including the tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Ignoring it could prove disastrous. The present situation marked by a record number of cases every single day has been due to the irrational exuberance early in the present year. Government and people it seems had assumed that COVID-19 was over. The lapse is now hitting the revival and that too hardest. A key intervention would be to protect the labour force, ensuring vaccinations to all in industry and workplaces. Employers must ensure that all facilities as regards covid-19 behavior are ensured. On the other hand the government and public need to take measures needed, without wasting any further time, to stop the wildfire spread of the covid-19.

COVID second wave: Pre-schools in uptown Sgr continue offline classes for kids

By: Gul Owais

Srinagar: As the government has ordered closure of schools upto Class 12th across Jammu and Kashmir due to spike in COVID-19 cases, many pre-schools in Srinagar are open for the students.
These institutions are violating the government directives and are also putting the lives of small kids at risk.

Pertinently, to contain the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the government on April 04, 2021 announced that schools from primary to Class 9 will remain closed for two weeks starting Monday. Classes 10, 11 and 12 will also be closed for one week in all schools from Monday till April 11 in the entire J&K,” the office of J&K LG tweeted. However, all exams for Class 10 and 12 shall be held as per the schedule.

However, an order issued only yesterday said that after taking an overall assessment of the situation pertaining to the spread of COVID-19 in Jammu and Kashmir, the state executive committee has decided that all schools in the Union Territory shall remain closed till April 18.

Nonetheless, the pre-schools teaching less than four-year-old kids have been kept open at some places, sources said.

They said a pre-school in Humhama area of Srinagar, is still functioning normally despite the government’s directive about the closure of the schools.

When this reporter contacted the faculty members of the pre-school, they confirmed that the physical classes are going on, saying that they also hold virtual classes whenever need arises.

It has also come to the fore another pre-school in Rawalpora is also open for the physical classes. However, there was no confirmation in this regard.

Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Syed Abdul Hanief Balkhi said that necessary action will be initiated in this regard. “We will send a team to verify the reports and if any violations are found, necessary action will be initiated,” he said.

Ramadan commences amid second COVID-19 wave

Srinagar: The holy month of Ramadan commenced on Monday and it’s for the second consecutive year that the sacred month will be observed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, also people couldn’t assemble in large numbers to offer congregation and night prayers in mosques. This year also the COVID norms are in force as the second wave of the pestilence has made things difficult for everyone.
It’s in place to mention here the Jammu and Kashmir administration last week imposed Corona night curfew in eight district of the union territory. However, on Sunday Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, tweeted: “Have directed DCs/SPs to facilitate observance of prayers/religious functions during the holy month of Ramadan during curfew timings, wherever necessary.”
A medico while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The Covid virus getting mutated has led to the resurgence of pestilence. People will have to avoid large gatherings. Wearing of masks is must and people visiting the mosques should ensure that they maintain distance from each other.”
It’s in place to mention here that J&K on Monday recorded this year’s highest spike in COVID-19 cases as more than 1200 people tested positive for the virus across the union territory.
An expert said, “Despite rise in COVID cases markets remain crowded. There is no social distancing maintained in public transport. If people keep on taking the present wave causally the government won’t be left with any other option other than imposing a lockdown. People will have to behave responsibly to prevent yet another closure of businesses.”
A medico said that there is every possibility about J&K witnessing rise in cases in coming days as the experts have predicted that the “second wave peak” is about to come. “Number of patients visiting the hospitals is increasing with each passing day. The space is getting filled. If the cases keep on increasing we will need more facilities to accommodate the critical patients as they need life support systems to survive. The coming days are going to be tough,” the medico added.
Many religious organizations have urged people to offer prayers in local mosques rather than central mosques in their areas. “We are taking all the possible steps to ensure that too many people don’t assemble in one mosque only. People are sensible enough and are aware about the fact that they have to keep themselves safe. We have assured the administration that we will cooperate in every possible way,” said a cleric.

Let’s combat vaccine nationalism: China

Beijing: As the COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading globally and the world economy is still facing the risk of recession, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged countries to join hands and combat “vaccine nationalism”.

“This unprecedented epidemic has made us realise deeply that the world is indeed a community with a shared future,” Wang said at an event at the foreign ministry on Monday.

Wang said that China has provided anti-epidemic materials to more than 160 countries and international organisations around the world so far and is providing urgently needed vaccines to more than 100 countries and international organizations.

China, he said, will continue to make its efforts to maintain the stability of the global anti-epidemic materials supply chain and provide support to countries in need.

“China will stick to solidarity and mutual assistance and join hands with other countries to eventually defeat the COVID-19 pandemic,” Xinhua news agency quoted Wang as saying.

He said China will adhere to opening-up and cooperation, and work with other countries to promote the recovery of the world economy.

“China, which continues to open wider to the outside world, will further deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries and inject more impetus into the recovery of the global economy,” Wang said.

International cooperation not one-way street: Jaishankar

‘Will not close the door on others, equitable access to vaccines critically important’
New Delhi: India on Tuesday declared that it will not close the door on others and called for building a Global Fairness Coalition to ensure equity and access to vaccines for all to beat the coronavirus pandemic.

“Equitable access (to vaccines) is critically important in this (fight against the pandemic),” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at the Raisina Dialogue, the government’s flagship conference on geopolitics and geoecomics, that began on virtual platform in the capital.

He said that in diplomacy today, doing good is being smart and India’s Vaccine Maitri policy reflected the larger outlook of Vaisudhaiva Kutumbakam (world is one family).

India has supplied COVID-19 vaccines to 80 odd countries since January.

Jaishankar said India’s ability to manufacture a range of Covid-19 vaccines as an example of global cooperation and said this couldn’t be seen as a “one-way street”.

“Those who question international cooperation, I want people to understand that our ability to make vaccines is a result of international cooperation. International cooperation is not a one-way street where we give to others, somewhere short changing ourselves,” he added.

Jaishankar stressed that India must and will rise as an “enlightened power” and it “will not close the door on others.”

India and South Africa have proposed a temporary waiver of intellectual property (IP) rules related to COVID-19 vaccines at the World Trade Organisation so that drugmakers in poor countries can start production of effective vaccines sooner.

The EAM said post- COVID resilience requires additional engines of growth. He said equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines can be done with the creation of additional manufacturing capabilities in countries such as India. Without that, “distributive justice by itself will not be adequate.”

Jaishankar also called for greater cooperation among developing countries saying that South-South cooperation should be converted to “practical initiatives.”

“The New India will step forward and do its part,” he stressed.

SKIMS stops routine admissions, surgeries: DAK

‘Cancer patients will suffer if their surgeries are delayed’

Srinagar: With SKIMS hospital stopping all routine admissions and surgeries, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday said patients will suffer immensely due to closure of these services.

“While it is critical to contain Covid resurgence, it is vitally important to take care of non-Covid patients as well,” said DAK President and influenza expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

SKIMS hospital has ordered closure of all routine surgeries and admissions from April 7 in view of resurgence of Covid-19 cases.

“This could be detrimental for patients,” DAK President said.

“Cancer patients can progress in no time and their disease will spread if their surgeries are delayed.”

“Even delaying simple surgery like gall bladder stone removal could lead to major issues in the long run,” he said.

“Most chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart, lung, liver and kidney disease require monitoring and drug dose modifications, and if not done they can land up in complications.”

“Hundreds of patients every day are referred to this premier health institution for advanced care. Their fate hangs by a fine thread now,” he added.

“While we fight the novel coronavirus, we must ensure that the price to be paid is not with the lives of non-Covid patients.”

“That fight will be immoral and not worth waging,” Dr Nisar said.

“Non-Covid patients have been paying the price since the pandemic began.”

“We lost many lives last year because of reduced access to healthcare,” he said.

“At least 25% of those deaths could have been prevented, had we been able to take care of non-Covid patients as well.”

“We can’t wait for Covid to go and ignore patients who are suffering from other ailments,” said Dr Nisar.

“We need to implement strategies by which we can manage both Covid and non-Covid patients.”

“Hospitals should have separate wards with dedicated ICU’s for corona patients so that there is no disruption to the care of non-Covid patients,” he said.

“The existing healthcare infrastructure and manpower in hospitals is sufficient and adequate to address the increasing cases of Covid and at the same time manage non-Covid patients.”
