NGOs turn as ‘silent saviors’ for people fighting Covid

Dar-ul-Ata, Athrout provide 465 oxygen concentrators, 55 BiPap machines to people

By:  Owais Gul

Srinagar, April 28: The Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in Srinagar are out yet again to provide a silent help to the people in need amid the spike in the COVID-19 cases and the reports about the shortage of oxygen facilities.

Athrout, Dar-ul-Ata and SRO are among the NGOs who have kept its men on toes to serve the people in the prevalent situation that arises after the spurt in the COVID-19 cases again in Jammu and Kashmir especially in Srinagar.

Amid the reports about shortage of oxygen supply in Valley hospitals, these NGOs have provided all of their oxygen concentrators to the people in need.

Not only in Jammu and Kashmir, but some of these NGOs have been providing the Oxygen concentrators to the people in need living outside J&K as well.

Shabir Ahmad, Chairman of Dar-ul-Ata said that the NGO has 115 oxygen concentrators and 15 BiPap machines, saying that all have been provided to people at present.

“We got a call from Delhi recently where people are being asked to pay Rs 18000 for an oxygen cylinder for ten days. We have sent five oxygen concentrators to the people in Delhi as well. Seven members of one of the families in Delhi are tested positive for COVID-19 and three have died as well and they were not finding it hard to get the oxygen concentrators following which we sent the oxygen concentrators to the family,” he said.

He added that the demand of oxygen concentrators has gone up as in the first 15 days of April, they have provided 70 oxygen concentrators to the patients in need while ten patients are still waiting for the oxygen concentrators. “As the demand has gone up, we have sought more concentrators from the distributor as we have been getting calls from the patients almost every day in this regard,” he said.

Similarly, Chairman of Athrout, Bashir Nadwi said since the cases started resurging in J&K, they have provided 350 oxygen concentrators to the people. Besides, they according to him have also provided 40 Auto BiPap machines to the patients in need.

“We have also provided PPE kits, Pulse oximeters, N95 and surgical masks to the people,” he said, adding that all these facilities are being provided to the people after getting proper prescriptions from them.

“As the cases spurt, all the available oxygen concentrators have been provided to the patients,” he said, adding that they are planning to come up with an oxygen bed to deal with the shortage of oxygen, saying that the oxygen beds at three to four places will be ready within one week. (KNO)

Over 50,000 girls cross marriageable age in Valley

By: Sajidah Yousuf

Srinagar:  In a worrisome development, nearly 50,000 girls of Kashmir have crossed the age bar of getting married owing to the society made unnecessary trends and rituals.

Among the total girls having crossed the marriageable age limit, more than 10,000 belong from district Srinagar.

In a survey conducted by a non-profit organization Tehreek e Fala-Ul-Muslimeen, authorities said nearly 50,000 girls in Kashmir valley have crossed the age limit of getting married because of the unnecessary fashion and trend.

Co-founder of Tehreek e Fala-Ul-Muslimeen, Abdul Rashid Naik said in 2016 the NGO tried to reach out for a particular group of unmarried girls who were not able to get married because of the financial constraints but in ground they found some strange reasons for their late marriages.

“In our scheme we had projected that we will search for a group of 100 unmarried girls but during the survey we found thousands of girls that were either belonging from the underprivileged families or were destitute and have fall the prey of the new social evils pertaining to the marriage,” Naik said.

He said, “In our survey, we found that most of the girls that were not getting married even after attaining the maximum age limit were belonging from the South Kashmir.”

In the survey the NGO found that “The main reason for the late marriages especially in the Downtown area of Srinagar is lack of financial sources and on the contrary the families of grooms are demanding dowry.”

He said that another important reason for the late marriages is the competition set by a group of people wherein the underprivileged families try to compete with their neighbours belonging from the well-to-do families in give-take formalities.

“Irony is that most of the grooms prefer to marry educated and employed girls,” Naik said.

Meanwhile Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Yateem Trust Zahoor Ahmad Tak said on an average the trust conducts 400 marriages of under privileged destitute and widows across Kashmir every year and almost every second girl has crossed the age of marriage.

“Ninety percent of the girls that seek financial help from us for their marriages are over aged and in most of the cases some have even crossed the maximum age limit of getting married,” Tak said.

Tak said that in the trust, they try to provide assistance to each needy girl who seeks marriage financial assistance and in most of the cases who turn-up for help belongs from the families that are headed by widows or have no source of income. (KNO)

World Day Of Safety, Health

Covid-19 pandemic is turning out to be the most devastating public health crises India has ever seen, and systemic failures are apparent all around. Jammu and Kashmir is no exception. There is gloom everywhere.

The pandemic has led governments, employers, workers and the general population to face unprecedented challenges and the many effects it has had on the world of work.

The World Day for Safety and Health at work is observed on April 28 and it focuses on strategies to strengthen national occupational safety and health (OSH) systems to build resilience, in order to face crises now and in the future, drawing on lessons learned and experiences from the world of work, as per the ILO.

Recognizing the great challenge that governments, employers, workers and whole societies have to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work focuses on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work and the focus revolves on the COVID-19 pandemic. This year it is aimed to improve the safety and health of young workers.

There is a need to make a safe environment at work place, more in health institutions. It is for patients, doctors and allied staff. Much harm is done to patients in health-care settings because of unsafe health-care practice and unsafe health-care communication.  As per experts, the quality of both practice and communication is dependent on the safety and well-being of health workers. Across the globe and people in this region must remain indebted to health workers during the current COVID-19 crises. They are not only putting in longer hours but also working under increasingly difficult circumstances, which affect both their physical and mental health.  Importantly they are putting the most precious thing in the world on line—their life for the safety of others.

Everyone must express gratitude towards all the doctors and frontline health workers for making untiring efforts in the fight against the pandemic and rendering continuous services day and night.

They are an inspiration for all and continue to serve the people. Their dedication, courage, and patience is worth praise. With their support, the people can effectively control the spread of Coronavirus in the J&K.  It is also incumbent on the government to make the workplace safe for them and ensure that they are provided with sophisticated equipment to guard against the ravaging virus.

There is a need for improving patient safety and promoting a culture of health worker safety and welfare.
