Covid claims 2 lives, 231 test positive in J&K

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Union territory on Tuesday witnessed two deaths due to Covid-19 while 231 fresh positive cases were also reported, taking the number of total active cases in the UT to 3,582.

With 02 more deaths the death toll in the UT has reached to 4,345 and 231 fresh positive cases reported on Tuesday has pushed the tally of positive cases to 317,481

Of the exact number of 317,481 cases, 197,189 are from Kashmir division and 120,292 from Jammu division. Officials said that among 231 new cases, 148 belong to Kashmir division while as 83 are from Jammu division, adding that the total number of positive cases in Kashmir division have reached to 197,189 including 192,960 recoveries and 2,225 deaths while as total number of positive cases in Jammu division have reached to 120,292 including 116,594 recoveries and 2,120 deaths.

The officials said that the total number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir are 3,582 including 2,004 from Kashmir division and 1,578 from Jammu division.

With 421 more recoveries, the tally of total recoveries in Jammu and Kashmir has reached to 309,554  which is 97.50 percent of the total cases.

“Cases tested positive in J&K include 63 from Srinagar, 09 from Baramulla, 14 from Budgam, 30 from Pulwama, 03 from Kupwara, 06 from Anantnag, 06 from Bandipora, 06 from Ganderbal, 10 from Kulgam and 01 from Shopian in Kashmir division while as 83 from Jammu division include 15 from Jammu, 10 from Udhampur, 06 from Rajouri, 21 from Doda, 00 from Kathua, 00 from Samba, 10 from Kishtwar, 10 from Poonch, 04 from Ramban and 07 from Reasi,” officials disclosed

Meanwhile, authorities on Tuesday said that no fresh case of Mucormycosis popularly known as black fungus was reported in the UT and the total cases of Mucormycosis stands at 30.

Out of 02 deaths reported today, 01 died in SMVDNH Katra and 01 died in CD hospital Srinagar.

As per officials figures, 70,408 positive cases including 830 deaths and 68,873 recoveries are from Srinagar, 23,338 including 280 deaths and 22,832 recoveries are from Baramulla, 22,682 including 22,283 recoveries and 204 deaths are from Budgam, 14,975  including 14,619 recoveries and 192 deaths are from Pulwama, 13,885 including 165 deaths and 13,541 recoveries are from Kupwara, 16,178 including 15,867 recoveries and 204 deaths are from Anantnag, 9,350 cases including 9,156 and 100 deaths are from Bandipora, 9,678 including 9,426 recoveries and 76 deaths are from Ganderbal, 11,133 including 10,868 recoveries and 116 deaths are from Kulgam and 5,562 including 5,495 recoveries and 58 deaths are from Shopian.

In Jammu division, 52,457 including 50,863 recoveries and 1,136 deaths are from Jammu district, 11,207 including 11,002  recoveries and 132 deaths are from Udhampur, 10,757 including 10,440 recoveries and 220 deaths are from Rajouri, 6,934 including 6,608 recoveries and 119 deaths are from Doda, 9,219 including 9,057 recoveries and 149 deaths are from Kathua, 7,091 including 6,924 recoveries and 119 deaths are from Samba, 4,525 including 4,370 recoveries and 43 deaths are from Kishtwar, 6,148 including 5,872 recoveries and 94 deaths are from Poonch, 5,876 including 5,731 recoveries and 65 deaths are from Ramban and 6,078 including 5,727 recoveries and 43 deaths are from Reasi.

As per the daily information bulletin 2,491,875 persons in Jammu and Kashmir are under observation while 9,980 persons have been kept under home quarantine besides that 3,582 persons are in isolation.

According to the bulletin, 2,226,419 persons have completed the surveillance period and 247,549 persons are under home surveillance besides that so far results of 10,314,088 samples are available. Out of 10,314,088 the number of samples tested negative stands at 9,996,607 while as 317,481 have tested positive, among them 3,582 persons are active, 309,554  persons have recovered and 4,345 persons have died. CBK files case against 8 Ayush doctors

Srinagar: Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a case against 8 Ayush doctors following allegations of “extortion and blackmailing” against them while running a “self styled” Association.

Sources said that the Crime Branch Kashmir has registered the case (FIR No. 34/2021) under section IPC sections of 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 506 (criminal intimidation) besides 5(2) Prevention of Corruption Act in Police Station Crime Branch Kashmir against the eight doctors following a complaint.

They said a written complaint was received by Crime Branch Kashmir, alleging that a fake association of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha & Homeopathy (AYUSH) Doctors is running within J&K. The complainant had also said that the Association was running on fake address without any true credentials. The complainant, they said, also alleged that the fake Association was also resorting to blackmailing, extortion, harassment to Indian System of Medicines (ISM) employees.

Subsequently, sources said, a preliminary verification was carried out at Crime Branch Kashmir.

During the course of probe, they said, it surfaced that the Association is not registered either with Registrar Societies or any Government Department. The letter head used by the self-styled office bearers (8 doctors) was used on fictitious names and with different fake addresses.

The probe further revealed that members of the Association were threatening, blackmailing Indian System of Medicines employees with the departmental action, transfers and have collected huge amount in cash in the name of the Association. The investigation is in progress and will be concluded on its merits, they added. (GNS)

Rashid Khan named Afghanistan T20I captain

Kabul:  Ace legspinner Rashid Khan has been named Afghanistan’s T20I captain, the country’s cricket board (ACB) announced on Tuesday.

Middle-order batter Najibullah Zadran will be Rashid’s deputy in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“Rashid was selected by senior ACB leadership led by ACB Chairman Farhan Yousefzai, for the role considering his experience, brilliant performance as well as leadership skills with the National team over the years,” the ACB said in a statement.

Rashid has served as Afghanistan’s captain in T20Is and ODIs – winning six out of the 16 ODIs he led in. He was named as Afghanistan’s all-format captain after the 2019 World Cup and took over the role from Gulbadin Naib.

However, Rashid was eventually replaced by Asghar Afghan but the board decided to sack the latter in May this year.

Afghanistan have already qualified for the main round of the T20 World Cup, which will take place in the UAE and Oman, by virtue of being one of the top eight teams in the format.

They have been placed in Group B alongside India, England and South Africa and will be joined by two teams from the Qualifier in the tournament that will run from October 17 to November 14.

CRPF constable dies after hit by bullet

Srinagar: A constable of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed when a bullet hit him in Srinagar, official sources said on Tuesday.

They said panic gripped in Haft Chinar area near Bakshi Stadium in the uptown Srinagar when a firing shot was heard last night. Other security forces immediately rushed to the area and found constable Sachin Yadav in a pool of blood.

He was immediately rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Sources said it was not immediately clear whether it was a suicide or accidental fire.

Police has registered a case and started investigation, they added.

8000 kms of road length to be macadamized this year: LG

Chairs high-level meet to review functioning of PWD

Srinagar: In order to strengthen the road network across J&K, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha Tuesday set the target of 8000 km of road length for the Public Works (R&B) Department.

The meeting was informed about a quantum leap in terms of achievement made by J&K Government in the road sector with 3167 kms of new roads been built under 272 schemes in 2020-21 as compared to previous 5 years’ average of 1450 kms.

The Lt Governor was chairing a high-level meeting to review the functioning of the PW(R&B) Department, wherein he sought the detailed status of achievements made and the goals set under various components.

Reach out to unconnected habitations with road connectivity. Put concerted efforts to strengthen and expand the intra UT road network, especially in rural & remote areas so that the population living in these areas can be extended all basic amenities for leading a quality life, the Lt Governor asked the PWD officials.

While seeking the present status of the physical health of the old infrastructure, the Lt Governor directed the concerned officials to implement report of Safety Audit of Bridges in letter & spirit and further instructed them to prioritize work on bridges that needs immediate repairs.

Emphasizing on keeping a regular watch on the work progress, the Lt Governor passed specific directions for regular on-ground visits of field officers for ensuring quality and constant monitoring of the infrastructure, and submission of the progress report on a regular basis, with special focus on road projects.

People have high expectations from the Government. It is important to address their developmental needs by taking concerted measures in this direction, observed the Lt Governor.

The Lt Governor suggested the officials to explore all possibilities to lay down a comprehensive mechanism to bring uniformity in tendering, quality control, inspection, and monitoring process.

The Lt Governor also issued clear-cut directions for completion of projects hanging in for long.

While reviewing the achievements being registered during the last six years, the Lt Governor complimented the efforts put in by the concerned officers for completing 3167 kms of new road length in 2020-21, which is more than double as compared to the length covered in previous 5 years.

On being informed about the target set by the PW(R&B) Department for covering around 4200 km road under PMGSY I&II connecting 191 habitations, besides completing 237 languishing projects this year,  the Lt Governor advised the officials for pooling of resources and opting for convergence mode for better outcome and speedy execution of projects.

Under Pot-hole Free Road programme, this year, the department aims to make 6000 km road length free of pot-holes, the chair was informed.

For maintaining transparency and accountability in the working of the department, the Lt Governor asked the concerned functionaries to put the working in public domain so that people can have easy access to all the relevant information.  He also called for developing a mechanism for providing right information to the public with the factual position of the projects.

On enquiring about the Health Infrastructural development being taken place in the UT, the Lt Governor was informed that the department is aiming at completing as many as 74 health infrastructural projects by the end of this year. The officials were also directed for ensuring effective utilization of installed oxygen plants.

He directed the concerned officials to expedite the pace of work on all projects taken up by the Department under various schemes for their timely completion, besides taking all requisite measures to remove the bottlenecks, if any, to achieve the target within fixed timelines.

The Lt Governor also sought a detailed report of schemes yet to be completed, besides work status of schools and colleges undertaken by JKPCC and directed for their completion in a time-bound manner.

During the review meeting, Shailendra Kumar, Principal Secretary to Government, Public Works (R&B) Department gave a detailed briefing about the targets and achievements under various schemes /programmes implemented by PWD (R&B) department for Construction, improvement/upgradation of roads & bridges, for providing connectivity with special focus on rural areas viz.  Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY), Bridge Programme, Central Road & Infrastructure fund (CRIF), NABARD, Road Sector, Cities & Towns (Macdamization), Languishing Projects, Pothole Free Road Programme, NHAI/NHIDCL/BRO, and other departmental works.

He informed the meeting that PW (R&B) Department is maintaining a massive road length of about 41584 kms, besides 1343 bridges across the UT.

Public Works (R&B) Department has taken a major step forward to develop a web-based system to carry out monitoring and evaluation of all infrastructure projects. This shall be the paradigm shift from manual processes to online system, the Principal Secretary informed the meeting.

The Lt Governor was also apprised about the status of Forest Clearances, health infrastructure, installation status of Oxygen Plants in J&K by MED, National Highways in J&K and, etc.

Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lt Governor; Nitishwar Kumar, Principal Secretary to Lt Governor; Vikas Kundal, Managing Director, JKPCC; Chief Engineers of allied agencies and other senior officers attended the meeting at Civil Secretariat.

Sgr Beautification: SMC officers directed to submit plan in five days

All inner roads to be macadamized within one month: Dy Mayor

Srinagar, July 6: Days after forming an Executive Committee, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has directed its officers to submit plans in the next five days for the beautification of Srinagar.

Sources within the corporation said that two meetings were held in the last couple of days wherein the SMC officers have been directed to come up with the plans in the areas falling under their jurisdiction.

“The officers have been directed to submit plans in the next five days following which the work for the beautification of Srinagar will be started,” they said.

Deputy Mayor, Parvez Qadri when contacted, confirmed the development and said that Srinagar to be beautified soon as the process has been initiated in this regard.

“The executive committee, which was formed recently, will be giving priority to the public demands,” he said, adding that all the public demands related to drainage, electricity and other priority issues that have been pending since long will be resolved shortly.

About the macadamization of Srinagar roads, Deputy Mayor informed that Rs 25 crores have been recently provided to the roads and Building (R&B) department for the blacktopping of inner roads of Srinagar.

He said all the inner roads falling under the jurisdiction of Srinagar to be macadamized within one month. “We have already provided Rs 15 crores to R&B for patching and other things. Now, additional Rs 25 crores have been provided to the department for macadamization of inner roads in Srinagar,” he added.

The short tenders to be issued soon and all the link roads to be macadamized within one month, he said, adding that almost two kilometer road length in every ward will be macadamized. (KNO)

Army chief discusses security challenges, joint military cooperation with UK

New Delhi: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane shared his thoughts on the security situation facing India and its neighbourhood, a region of great and increasing importance for the United Kingdom and allied defence thinking.
Gen Naravane in a conversation with members of the London-based Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies exchanged views on the security challenges and opportunities in the region.

Gen Naravane, who arrived in the UK capital on Monday on the first leg of his European tour, called on General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, Chief of General Staff of the British Army, and both discussed issues of joint military cooperation.

He also interacted with General Sir Nicholas Carter, Chief of Defence Staff, and exchanged views on bilateral defence cooperation.

India and the UK are to expand cooperation under the Defence and International Security Partnership (DISP) agreed in 2015 to deepen security ties and enable smooth collaboration between the armed services.

On May 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Boris Johnson agreed on a common vision of a new and transformational Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, underpinned by their shared commitment to democracy, fundamental freedoms, multilateralism and a rules based international order.

Gen Naravane earlier inspected the Guard of Honour provided by the Grenadier Guards on Horse Guards’ Parade Square as part of his welcome by the British Army.

He is also scheduled to meet UK Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace, before leaving for Italy.

Construction work on building stopped after Baghat residents hit streets

Srinagar: Authorities in Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Tuesday stopped construction work on a private building after residents of Baghat locality staged a protest, demanding immediate demolishing of the structure.

Locals from Baghat area took to the streets in the morning to press for their demands. They said that despite approaching the concerned authorities, the blue-eyed person, who is allegedly raising a commercial building in residential areas, was allowed to go ahead with the construction.

“Nobody paid heed to the sufferings of the local populace,” they said, adding that the reluctance shown by the concerned authorities forced them to hit the streets to press for their demands.

They informed that soon after they approached the concerned police station, the officials from Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) visited the spot and stopped the work till further orders.

Earlier, the locals had said that after an objection raised by them some three years back, the court had put the building permission in abeyance after it was found that a commercial building was being raised in the locality.

However, the work at the building remained halted for quite some years, but was resumed by the owner again a few days back, raising apprehensions among the locals.

Meanwhile, Chief Enforcement Officer (CEO) SMC couldn’t be contacted as he didn’t receive the repeated phone calls. (KNO)

CBK files challan against 6 persons for selling Waqf land

Srinagar: Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against six persons for selling 6.6 Kanals of Waqf land at Rangpora Zakoora here in 2003 on forged signatures of then Vice Chairman Muslim Auqaf Trust.

A spokesman of the Crime Branch Kashmir said that the case (FIR No. 22/2012) under section 420,468,467,471,120-B RPC & 5(2) PC Act was registered in 2012 after preliminary investigation following a complaint then Secretary WAQF Board in this regard.

The charge-sheet was filed against six accused persons before the Court of Additional District and Session Judge Anti-Corruption Srinagar.

The accused include Abdul Rashid Wani son of Abdul Aziz Wani of Habbak Crossing Zakura (Controller Revenue Estates/ Assistant Secretary Muslim Auqaf Trust), Mohammad Farooq Hakak alias Jan son of Ghulam Nabi Hakak of Kadi Kadal Srinagar, Ghulam Qadir Mir son of Mohammad Sultan Mir of Azad Basti Tower Lane Natipora and Mohammad Lateef Misger son of Mohammad Sidiq Misger of Aali Kadal, at present Alamdar Colony Lal Bazar Srinagar besides two persons who passed away since.

In the complaint, the then Secretary Waqf Board had alleged that the land measuring 6.6  Kanals situated at Rangpora Zakoora of Waqf Board, was shown alienated in favour of Ishtaq Ahmad Ashai by way of fabricating an order (No. 360-64 Dated 05.08.2003).

“The order was shown issued under the forged signatures of then Vice Chairman Muslim Auqaf Trust. Accordingly after conducting a Preliminary Verification, a case FIR No. 22/2012 was registered,” the spokesman said in a statement, adding, “The investigation conducted has established the offences against the six accused persons who have hatched criminal conspiracy with one another and thereby have been able to grab the land situated at Rangpora Zakoora belonging Waqf Board. The land was found transferred through a fake NOC issued by the accused person.”

The investigation further revealed that the land was actually to be leased out but instead the officers and officials of Waqf Board in connivance with the accused land brokers issued the forged order and fake NOC regarding the alienation of land and thus managed to get the land sold illegally to the person who happen to be the employees of Waqf Board.

Damaged in 2014 floods, Chadoora bridge awaits renovation

Budgam: Seven years after the 2014 deluge damaged Chadoora bridge, the authorities in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district have miserably failed to undertake the repairs on the bridge, thereby making the residents suffer a lot.

The residents said that over seven years have elapsed since the bridge on Doodh Ganga Nallah was damaged during September 2014 floods.

However, they said the authorities have failed to undertake repairs on the small bridge, “thereby putting lives of people at risk.”

“At least ten accidents have taken place on the bridge since it has suffered damages, but none among the administration bother to look into the issue,” Younis Ahmad, a local shopkeeper said.

“The damaged bridge is posing a grave threat to the lives of people who pass through it on a regular basis in absence of any alternative,” he said.

The locals appealed to the concerned authorities to take steps to repair this bridge so that they could heave a sigh of relief. (KNO)
