Kabul: Ace legspinner Rashid Khan has been named Afghanistan’s T20I captain, the country’s cricket board (ACB) announced on Tuesday.
Middle-order batter Najibullah Zadran will be Rashid’s deputy in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
“Rashid was selected by senior ACB leadership led by ACB Chairman Farhan Yousefzai, for the role considering his experience, brilliant performance as well as leadership skills with the National team over the years,” the ACB said in a statement.
Rashid has served as Afghanistan’s captain in T20Is and ODIs – winning six out of the 16 ODIs he led in. He was named as Afghanistan’s all-format captain after the 2019 World Cup and took over the role from Gulbadin Naib.
However, Rashid was eventually replaced by Asghar Afghan but the board decided to sack the latter in May this year.
Afghanistan have already qualified for the main round of the T20 World Cup, which will take place in the UAE and Oman, by virtue of being one of the top eight teams in the format.
They have been placed in Group B alongside India, England and South Africa and will be joined by two teams from the Qualifier in the tournament that will run from October 17 to November 14.
