Indian Test team uses innovative method to practice catching

Chester-le-Street (Durham):  Some of the top fielding sides in world cricket like New Zealand, Australia and South Africa play rugby as warm-up. The Indian team in England took it a step further on Tuesday and improvised the rugby warm-up using the cricket ball.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video of players using an innovative method apparently brought into India’s practice sessions by the coaching staff.

The players had to carry the ball, through seven passes, and deposit it in a small circle marked inside the field some distance away from them.

The players, however, weren’t allowed to use both their hands.

Also, while they could catch with either hand, they couldn’t pass it with the same hand.

“You have to run and catch the ball. It is a simple game. The hand with which you catch, you have to throw with the opposite hand,” said a member of the team support staff.

“After the seventh pass, the ball should land inside that area. The ball has to be kept in that area, you can drop it, place it there,” he added.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who bats at No. 3 in the Indian Test side, explained it in the video, “You have to catch the ball with either hand and have to throw with the opposite hand and if you get touched you are out. You have to have seven passes and the ball has to drop in the middle [small circle].”

While India were fine in the field in the World Test Championship final, dropping only a couple of catches on the final day, their catching and outfielding has been a cause for concern in recent times.

Kisan Sansad demands repeal of Essential Commodities Amendment Act

New Delhi: After two days of debate, the Kisan Sansad on Tuesday reiterated its demand that the Essential Commodities Amendment Act 2020 should be immediately repealed.

The other two resolutions passed were that the state governments, in consultation with farmer unions, should strengthen the marketing, transportation, storage facilities, and food processing for crops, and bring improvements in food delivery system to ensure basic food and nutrition security to all people, while the Central government should frame a policy to ensure establishment of such basic facilities and infrastructure that will ensure that farmers and their families, not corporate and MNCs, earn from the food production, storage, processing and marketing, a statement from the Kisan Sansad said.

The farmers deliberated and agreed that the provisions of the Essential Commodities Amendment Act 2020 are designed to favour agribusiness companies and big traders at the expense of common consumers and farmers, and the dismantling of existing regulation and oversight mechanisms will lead to domination of agricultural markets by big corporate and global food processing and marketing companies.

“The Act removes the power of the government to prevent hoarding and black-marketing of foodstuffs by big companies and traders, and hence should be termed the ‘Freedom to Hoard and Black-market Foodstuffs’ Act,” the statement said.

The farmers also claimed that the Section 2 of the Act will lead to effective removal of “foodstuffs, including cereals, pulses, potato, onions, edible oilseeds and oils” from regulation under the Act except “under extraordinary circumstances which may include war, famine, extraordinary price rise and natural calamity of grave nature”, and expressed concern that all stock limits now shall be only “based on price rise” which will allow “a 100 per cent increase in the retail prices of horticultural produce, or 50 per cent increase in the retail price of non-perishable agricultural food stuffs” over the price prevailing immediately preceding 12 months.

Tourism Needs Continuous Attention

Tourism sector is a major engine of economic growth of Jammu & Kashmir. It contributes about 7% of the GDP of Jammu and Kashmir.

Of late, the tourism industry in the country including J&K has been affected due to lock down, suspension of regular international flights and tourist visas on account of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

However, domestic tourism in the country including the J&K is showing signs of recovery, the government said in parliament on Monday.

Kashmir has historically been an attraction for anyone who wants to relax, and enjoy. In the past, the stakeholders have not been able to promote the Kashmir Valley, its unique weather, mountain peaks, water bodies, vast fields and orchids, archeological sites, and cultural signposts. However, to at least see tourism back on rails in Jammu and Kashmir, both the local and central governments need to work in tandem and promote this part of the globe, known to be a paradise on the earth, as an all-season destination locally and internationally.

The administration has now been doing its best to push tourism recovery. In J&K budget 2021-2022, Rs 1,000 crore shall be taken up for development of tourism infrastructure. Officials said the budget

for tourism and culture was Rs 283 crore in 2020-2021 it is Rs 780 crore this financial year

Minister of Tourism G. Kishan Reddy told Parliament that as per inputs of Ministry of External  Affairs,  Indian Missions/Posts abroad regularly keeps foreign interlocutors briefed about political, social and developmental endeavours in the Jammu & Kashmir, and its positive impact on the people, economy and tourism. Tourism promotion, including Jammu & Kashmir is part of activities carried out by Missions/Posts, he said.

Such an endeavor is welcome and must be continued, although with little more intensity.

There is also a need for increasing awareness and in contemporary times more webinars should be organized to create awareness among domestic travellers and encourage them to explore the various tourist destinations and products in J&K.

Also, there is a need for proper maintenance of tourism properties so that they remain in impeccable condition throughout the year.

Recently, the Ministry of Tourism recognised the immense potential of Rural Tourism in the country, and has been actively working on development and promotion of this niche area of tourism.  Both the J & K government and the centre should work on various projects for development under the circuit by identifying them and utilizing funds optimally.
