Tangath bridge in Bandipora continues to remain incomplete, locals suffer

BY: Sajid Raina

Bandipora: The residents of Tangath village and its adjoining areas of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district are suffering due to the delay in completion of the vital bridge that connects Tangath village to the Pannar area.

Locals while complaining about the grievance said that the bridge was sanctioned years ago by the government following which the work on it began last year but since then only pillars have been half raised.

The villagers said that they are facing many difficulties in absence of this bridge as it is supposed to connect Tangath and other adjoining remote villages to the Pannar area.

“For the past one year, the construction work on the bridge is going at a snail’s pace,” Mushtaq Ahmad, a local, said, adding that students face life threatening conditions having to go to school walking through the forest.

The villagers have appealed to the government to complete construction of the bridge crucial for their lives at the earliest possible.

Meanwhile, an administrative official when contacted regarding the issue said that the work on the bridge will be completed within a few months. (KNO)

I took the decisions in Australia but someone else took credit: Ajinkya Rahane

New Delhi: Ajinkya Rahane, the former India Test vice-captain took a cryptic dig at certain people, saying that ‘someone else took the credit’ for the crucial decisions he made on the field or in the dressing room, during India’s historic 2-1 win in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

With regular captain Virat Kohli back home to be there for the birth of his first child, Rahane took over the reins and led the Team India, who were rolled over for 36 in the first Test in Adelaide, spiritedly in Australia.

Leading from the front, Rahane smashed a magnificent hundred as India won the second match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by eight wickets. India continued to fight back, drawing the Sydney Test and winning the final match in Gabba.

The then captain Rahane earned accolades from fans and experts for leading a heavily depleted team not just at the MCG but through the remainder of the four-match series. Notably, India lost many key players through the series to injuries but still emerged victorious despite all the setbacks.

“I know what I’ve done there. I don’t need to tell anyone. That’s not my nature to go and take credit. Yes, there were some things that I took the decisions on the field or in the dressing room but someone else took the credit for it,” Rahane said in an episode of ‘Backstage With Boria’.

“(What was) important for me was that we won the series. That was a historical series and for me, that was really special,” he added.

Though, the 33-year old did not take any names but his comments could well be directed towards the then head coach Ravi Shastri, who was widely praised publicly for the team’s performance.

Known for his flamboyance, Shastri has been very vocal in media interactions about the team’s turnaround and victories in Australia.

“After that, the reactions from people or those who took credit or what was said in the media, ‘I did this’ or ‘This was my decision’, or ‘This was my call’, it was for them to talk about,” Rahane further said.

“From my end, I knew what decisions I took on the field and what decisions I took on my instincts. Yes, we talked with the management too but I used to laugh about it, that is what I did on the field, I never talk much about myself or praise myself. But what I did there, I knew,” he added.

However, Rahane has been struggling with his batting form in recent times. According to many experts, he is in the twilight of his career. In fact, many feel that he has already played his final Test for India.

But, the senior batter, who was stripped of vice-captaincy last December, remains unaffected by the criticism.

“I just smile when people say my career is finished, people who know the sport don’t talk like that – everyone knows what happened in Australia/even before it, my contribution in red ball – people who love the sport will talk sensibly,” said Rahane.

GI Label For Kashmir Carpets

Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) introduced QR Code mechanism for the purpose of testing and certification of hand-knotted carpets produced in Kashmir under Geographical Indication of Goods Act 1999 was formally launched by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The QR Code along with ‘GI’ logo shall be printed on a unique destructible label. By virtue of this QR Code mechanism, the customer would be able to check and verify requisite details of carpet with the help of Smart Phone before purchasing the same just to confirm its genuineness and authenticity along with other related parameters of carpets. It comes as a shot in the arm for Kashmir’s hand-knotted carpet famous for its intricate and colourful floral patterns.

Kashmir’s traders’ body welcomed the step as it will help in checking the cheating and misbranding that has badly dented the Carpet Industry in Kashmir.

The GI tagging restores customer’s confidence, bedsides protects authenticity of artisans.  As has been correctly stated by the Kashmir traders’ body, the GI for Kashmir hand-knotted carpets will capture vital parameters of the Carpet—GI user, manufacturers, artisans, knots per square inch, the material used etc.

Kashmir enjoys a prominent position on the world map of exports. However, over the past few years, machine made and fake goods are being sold in the name Kashmir handicrafts which is detrimental to the future of the craft sector. The introduction of QR code will surely facilitate the artisans and weavers to avail testing, certification, and labelling facility for authentication of the products.

To ensure long term survival of the Kashmir craft sector, the QR code will go a long term and will restore its exclusivity, elegance and traditional splendour for which it is known internationally.

While certification is welcome, the government needs to take steps that will ensure better production.  Those associated with trade should be taken care of. GI label should bring more people back into the craft and wages must increase.

Necessary support should be rendered to the weavers and efforts should be made to revive the trade.   The GI should improve the income level of concerned weavers significantly and their interests should be protected through authentic trade.

There is hoping that the initiative will give much-needed fillip and boost to the carpet industry for manufacturing hand-knotted carpets as per the pre-decided parameters and specifications.
