Shreyas shines in India’s 6-wicket win and 3-0 sweep over Sri Lanka

Dharamsala:  Dasun Shanaka’s fighting fifty went in vain as Sheyas Iyer smashed his third consecutive half-century (73 not out off 45) and helped India thrash Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third and final T20I to complete the 3-0 clean sweep, at the picturesque HPCA Stadium, here on Sunday.

It was India’s 12th successive T20I win, the joint-longest winning streak for a full member and their seventh series win on the trot at home in this format.

With this win, they also completed their third successive 3-0 sweep of a series in the shortest format of the game. Under Rohit Sharma captaincy, India registered a 3-0 win over New Zealand at home last year and they thrashed West Indies 3-0 earlier this month to go to the top spot of ICC T20I Rankings. And with the sweep of Sri Lanka, India are set to retain the numero uno position.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, a courageous fifty from skipper Dasun Shanaka helped Sri Lanka post 146/5 in 20 overs. The likes of Avesh Khan (2/23), Mohammed Siraj (1/22), Harshal Patel (1/29), Ravi Bishnoi (1/32) picked wickets at regular intervals to keep Sri Lanka on the backfoot before Shanaka played a solid knock to help his team post a fighting total.

Chasing a challenging total, India were off to a poor start as Dushmantha Chameera dismissed Rohit Sharma (5) in the second over of the innings. Sheyas Iyer then joined make-shift opener Sanju Samson at the crease and kept the scoreboard moving at a brisk pace from the word go.

Samson looked good during his short stay at the crease before he edged Chamika Karunaratne behind for a 12-ball 18. It was Deepak Hooda who promoted at No 4 and he hit 21 off 16 before getting dismissed by Lahiru Kumara.

Despite losing partners frequently, Iyer never took the foot off the pedal, punishing the Sri Lanka bowlers every time they missed the mark even by a whisker and his half-century came off only 29 balls.

Venkatesh Iyer (5) who batted at No 5 got out cheaply but Shreyas and Ravindra Jadeja ensured that India didn’t lose any more wickets. In the end, Shreyas and Jadeja (22 not out off 15) remained not out as India sealed yet another comfortable run-chase, scurrying past Sri Lanka’s total of 146/5 with 3.1 overs to spare. Overall, Shreyas remained unbeaten in three matches and finished with 204 runs in the series, decimating Sri Lanka single-handedly with the bat in the series.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were off to a terrible start, losing the wickets of Danushka Gunathilaka (0), Pathum Nissanka (1) and Charith Asalanka (4) inside the powerplay and scoring just 18 runs.

Mohammed Siraj gave India first breakthrough in the very first over of the match, removing Gunathilaka, who dragged on a ball to his stumps. Avesh Khan got rid of Pathum Nissanka in the next over, to get his first international wicket and then he dismissed Asalanka to leave Sri Lanka in deep trouble.

Janith Liyanage and Dinesh Chandimal then looked to rebuild Sri Lanka’s innings and had a brief stand of 18 runs for the 4th wicket between them. However, Rohit introduced Bishnoi into the attack and he delivered straightaway by removing Liyanage, who couldn’t read the googly and was bowled, leaving visitors at 29/4 after 8.3 overs.

By taking wickets at regular intervals, Indian bowlers kept Sri Lankan batters under constant pressure and the responsibility was on experienced Dinesh Chandimal and skipper Dasun Shanaka, who played an attacking knock in the second T20I, to bail out their team from a struggling situation.

The duo gave some impetus to Sri Lankan innings during their 31 runs partnership by hitting some occasional boundaries and rotating strikes well. Chandimal especially looked a bit more comfortable against Indians spinners and played some beautiful shots. However, Harshal Patel removed Chandimal to inflict further damage on Sri Lanka.

At 60-5 after 12.1 overs, it seemed like Sri Lanka won’t be able to bat for a full 20 overs but Dasun Shanaka had other plans. Continuing his superb batting form, Shanaka took matters on his own and played an counter-attacking knock, stitching an unbeaten 86-run stand with Karunaratne.

And even in that stand, Shanaka was the aggressor because Karunaratne (12 off 19) hardly timed a ball. Overall, Sri Lanka made a remarkable recovery and posted a challenging total of 146/5 in 20 overs.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 146/5 in 20 overs (Dasun Shanaka 74 not out, Dinesh Chandimal 25; Avesh Khan 2/23) lost to India (Shreyas Iyer 73 not out off 45, Ravindra Jadeja 22 not out; Lahiru Kumara 2/28) by 6 wickets

Post snowfall: Measures taken for better power supply to Charar-e-Sharief areas: PDD

Srinagar: After snowfall caused extensive damage to power infrastructure in Budgam areas, the Power Development department (PDD) has said that the measures have been taken to ensure better power supply to Charar-e-Sharief and other adjacent areas.

An official communiqué issued to Precious Kashmir said that as reported by concerned AEE, due to recent heavy snowfall, Nowbugh Grid Station Transmission line underwent a huge damage, which caused tremendous power problem to Charari Sharief & Nagam along with its adjoining areas.

“As stop gap arrangement, all the receiving stations Char1, Char 2 & Nagam were shifted on 33kv Budgam Ichgam Chadora line, since the same line is feeding power supply to receiving station Choon, Ichgam & Chadora, it couldn’t bear the additional load of Char 1, Char 2 & Nagam, which resulted in huge tripping of 33kv line due to over drawl,” it said.

“Now both Charari Sharief as well as Nagam have been shifted on Pampore Grid for the time being till Nowbugh Grid Transmission line is restored back, we hope both the localities will get better power supply, inconvenience caused to the general public is not any deliberate attempt but it is natural, however, the department will try to improve it within the Grid & line constraints,” it added.

Sgr-Jmu highway reopens after fresh landslides, 2-way traffic today

Jammu: Traffic movement on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway resumed on Sunday after being suspended for over 30 hours owing to snowfall in the Qazigund-Banihal sector and landslides in Ramban, officials said.

The highway was closed for traffic around 4.30 am on Saturday and debris was cleared at over a dozen places between Chanderkote and Ramsu, but a fresh landslide at Magerkote in Ramban around 5 am delayed the resumption of traffic movement, Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic (National Highway) Shabir Ahmad Malik said.

He said the road clearance agencies pressed personnel and machinery again on Sunday morning and took several hours to finally restore vehicular traffic on the highway — the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

A massive traffic jam was witnessed at the Nagrota bypass in Jammu after the traffic police stopped light motor vehicles (LMVs) carrying passengers from Jammu to Srinagar on Sunday morning. Traffic movement was restored around noon, the officials said.

They said a similar situation was seen at Qazigund in south Kashmir where all Jammu-bound traffic was halted this morning due to the closure of the highway.

“After the road clearance operation was completed, traffic was first allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar. Later, vehicular movement was also allowed from Qazigund towards Jammu,” the SSP said.

The Banihal-Qazigund sector of the highway experienced snowfall on Friday-Saturday night, while landslides and shooting of stones from the hillocks were triggered by heavy rains at Rompadi-Banihal, Shalgardh-Wagan, Moumpassi-Ramsu, Panthiyal, Digdole, Maroog, Monkey Morh, Cafeteria Morh and Mehar in Raman district.

The closure of the highway left a large number of trucks stranded at different places which were allowed to move towards their respective destinations later on Sunday, the officials said.

“Commuters are advised not to travel on Jammu-Srinagar highway(NH-44) without confirming the status of road from TCU Jammu/ Ramban & Srinagar in view of inclement weather prediction issued by met department,” a traffic department official said, adding, “However tomorrow, subject to fair weather and better road conditions LMVs(Passenger)/private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa . TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.”

Cong leader, Azad’s nephew joins BJP

0

Srinagar: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s nephew Mubashir Azad joined the BJP on Sunday and said he was “influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s developmental works at the ground level”.

Mubashir Azad, the son of Ghulam Nabi Azad’s youngest brother Liaqat Ali, also said his uncle was “disrespected” by the Congress leadership which hurt him and led to him parting ways with the grand old party.

He, however, claimed that he did not discuss the plan to join the BJP with his uncle.

Mubashir Azad and his supporters were welcomed into the party fold by Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina and other senior leaders, including ex-MLA Daleep Singh Parihar.

His joining the saffron party was described Raina as a “turning point” that will pave the way for more young activists from the Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts of the Chenab Valley region to join the party.

“The BJP is growing fast with the joining of political leaders from opposition parties, social workers from all communities whether Hindus, Muslims, Gujjars, Bakarwals and Paharis,” he said.

In April 2009, Azad’s brother Ghulam Ali had also joined the BJP.

Mubashir Azad said, “The (Congress) party is marred in infighting… while under the leadership of Modi the work for the welfare of the people is taking place on the ground.”

“The way the Congress treated (Ghulam Nabi) Azad, one of the charismatic leaders of the party and former chief minister, has hurt the sentiments of the common masses.

“He was praised by the prime minister for his service to the nation but was sidelined by the party, Mubashir said.

Azad was part of the G-23, a group of dissenting Congress leaders who wrote to party president Sonia Gandhi in August 2020 demanding an organisational overhaul. (Agencies)
