Following the death of two minor kids in a road accident in Srinagar, the Jammu and Kashmir traffic has swung in action to rescue the innocent lives. The police have started the seizure of motor-bikes and cars driven by the minor. With the locals appreciating the move of Jammu and Kashmir traffic department, the parents of the wards have started counseling their kids for not driving or riding their vehicles. The crackdown on unlicensed minor kids has been going on for years but the recent accident in Srinagar that claimed two lives has pushed the traffic police to go further strictly on minor drivers and construct accountability.
Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing an upsurge in road accidents and according to the news reports in this regard, over 4400 persons have lost their lives while over 6100 persons have got injured in different road accidents from January-September 2024. The move of seizure of vehicles and fines against the underage drivers shall not remain confined to minor kids only; there should be a complete accountability and every law breaker should be dealt with in accordance to the bylaw. Besides, the exercises of check and balance and ensuring the accountability shall not remain limited to sometime only, it should be a daily routine for the concerned authorities and the traffic management. In order to bring a complete accountability to reduce accidents, an inclusive awareness and education should be delivered to those parents who do not abide by law. There is a dire need to see the strict enforcement of traffic police as a protection of people rather than the castigatory efforts. The state of mind of seeing the efforts of traffic must be appreciated so that each and every citizen is following the traffic rules judicially.
