In Kashmir valley, there has been an alarming trend of road accidents in which dozens of innocent lives fall prey to fatalities and injuries.
The trend of road accidents requires immediate action from the traffic management authorities and the government.
In recent years Kashmir is witnessing a huge influx in traffic that plays a major role in the surge in road accidents. Besides, the old narrow roads are also responsible for the upsurge in the accidents.
However, the road accidents in Kashmir do not remain confined to narrow roads and poor infrastructure only. Other factors that contribute to the surge in accidents can be rash driving, drunk driving and using electronic gadgets while driving.
The violation of traffic rules and the lack of wakefulness among the people also play an important role in causing the road accidents.
Almost on a daily basis, there comes news of road accidents especially of the motorcyclists. In the past couple of weeks nearly dozens of persons have lost their lives in different road accidents.
According to the reports, in the first nine months of the year 2024, at least 4,457 accidents took place in Jammu and Kashmir in which 621 persons lost their lives besides 6,122 persons were injured in these accidents.
The ongoing situation of rise in accidents in Kashmir valley demands an immediate elucidation including the upgradation of roads and infrastructure like car parking, setting up of sign boards and active involvement of traffic police department.
There should be a public awareness wherein the public and other drivers are educated about the basic requirements of the driving. There shall also be a complete check on the drivers who drive without licenses.
