Srinagar, Dec 14: The 3rd year students of nursing colleges affiliated with Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah (BGSB) University on Monday said the varsity is asking them to appear for the year-end examination while they have completed only thirty percent of syllabi.
“The academic year that usually lasts for at least 11 month lasted for only eight months for 2nd year nursing students and in these months, the college authorities have completed only thirty percent of the syllabi,” the students said.
The aggrieved students said on October-23, the concerned college authorities asked them to submit their exam forms of their second year in October-2020.

She said, today they notified the date sheet for the examination of 3rd year from 24 December, Second year from December 31 and first year from January 09.
The students alleged that earlier in August BGSB controller of examination had told them that the varsity told us that they have not decided the mode of exams.
“Now we want the varsity to either give us syllabi relaxation or extend the time for exam preparations as we have covered only thirty percent of the syllabi of our second year,” they said.
The students said that the Irony is that despite the fact of incomplete syllabi, the BGSB authorities are asking us to appear for the exams of the entire syllabi.
Meanwhile, BGSB controller of examination, Mohammad Ishaq said the concerned college principals have informed the varsity that they completed the whole syllabi and were ready to conduct exams.
Ishaq said that the varsity was following the protocols and haven’t received any complaints from the students with regard to the matter.
“As of now, no student has come up with such a complaint that they haven’t completed the syllabi,” he said.
He said that the varsity notifies the date sheets only when it gets nod from the college authorities—(KNO)

Fazi Begum, who claimed she is more than 100 year-old, said that she attended the BJP rally in Chrangpora village of Baniyari today as she wanted to get her son released from jail.
Two of her neighbours accompanied Fazi to the rally venue, as she could not walk on her own and needed support to reach the venue.
She said some “Jan Sahab of BJP” has promised her that her son would be released if she attends the BJP rally that was addressed by the BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain and other senior leaders of the party including Sofi Yousuf.
Fazi said that her son and seven other persons are in jail for the last 10 years without for no offence. “I am helpless and I have nobody to take care of me. He was my only hope but he is in jail for the last 10 years on baseless charges,” she said.

Saving Infants

As was observed by the Supreme Court, “unprecedented neonatal/infant deaths took place in January-May 2012 in GB Pant Hospital, Srinagar.” While over 500 infants died in GB Pant hospital alone in 2012, the top court underlined that the quality of medical care in government hospitals across J&K was a matter which should receive attention. The observations were made by the top court in 2016 and in four years proceeding to the matter, the high court had passed numerous orders which prompted a response from officials which seems to be showing up now. In the last three years, many gains have been achieved towards the ultimate goal.

As per the National Family Healthy Survey (NFHS-5), conducted by International Institute of Population Sciences Mumbai, J&K has recorded 22 points decrease in Neonatal Mortality Rate (NNMR) from 23.1 to 9.8, 16 points decrease in Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) from 32.4 to 16.3 and 19 points decrease in Under Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) from 37.6 to 18.5, which is unprecedented and is the reflection of health status of general population.

The report also points a positive change towards the girl child and recorded improvement in Sex Ratio at birth from 923 to 976 females per1000 males.

The average number of children per women, measured by Total Fertility Rate (TFR), has also shown a significant improvement since last report which decreased from 2.0 to 1.4.

The latest data seems to be in consonance with the data released by the Registrar General of India in the SRS bulletin in May this year.

As per it, the J&K’s IMR was significantly better when compared to the national level of 32 infant deaths per thousand live births for the year 2018. Nationally it is about one-fourth as compared to 1971 (129 infant deaths per thousand live births).

Not only in Jammu and Kashmir but IMR has also witnessed a decline of about 35% in rural areas and about 32% in urban areas in India in the last ten years.

While selective achievements are important, they cannot always be a sign of overall progress. The government has also set two years’ time to bring down the IMR in single digit and to achieve the remarkable feat, a lot of effort on many counts is needed and there is no room for complacency.

There are connected issues such as malnutrition among women and children which attention to achieve the feat.

Stiff competition, participation of people make DDC elections interesting

Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, Dec 13: As the District Development Council elections in Jammu and Kashmir have entered into a decisive stage with two more phases left, people are keeping their fingers  crossed and are trying to guess who will be the winner.
Soon after the DDC polls commenced the State Election Commissioner K K Sharma announced that no exit polls will be held till all the eight phases are completed. Till now no attempt has been made by any of the agencies to project which party is having an upper hand.
An analyst while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The ongoing DDC elections are important as these were the maiden elections in J&K after the abrogation of Article 370. The results of these polls will set the tone and tenor for the democratic exercises that will be held in coming days.”
He said, “People coming out in large numbers to take part in the ongoing DDC polls is an indication that the competition between the contestants is stiff. So it means that winning these elections is not going to be a cakewalk for anyone.”
A politician said  that Kashmir based parties forming Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and contesting the ongoing polls collectively have made these elections very interesting. “Even after the end of six phases picture about who has got the upper hand hasn’t become clear as the competition seems tough,” he added.
He said that PAGD has had its own share of problems as sharp differences had cropped up between the partners over seat sharing arrangement

On Saturday senior Congress leader from Jammu region Ravinder Sharma accused National Conference of violating seat sharing agreement in Rajouri district. Earlier the PDP leader Ghulam Nabi Hanjura had leveled similar allegations. “Despite facing storms the PAGD has managed to keep its flock together and is hoping that it would be able to make an impact,” said an analyst.
An observer said, “We can’t predict who will win these DDC elections but one thing looks sure that the PAGD candidates are putting up a tough fight.”
He said soon after the differences over seat sharing arrangement emerged the voices within the PAGD had become shriller to contest the elections individually. “But the leadership prevailed and didn’t allow the situation to take an ugly turn,” the observer said, adding that “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too is trying to woo the voters and the reports suggest that the party is doing well in Jammu region, but in Kashmir PAGD is doing well.”

PAGD yet to come up with past one year’s report

Gul Owais

Srinagar, Dec 13: The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has failed to come up with the report of the past one year as promised by the leaders during its formation in October this year.

Pertinently, on October 24 this year, PAGD during its formation constituted a group consisting of Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, Sajad Gani Lone, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah and Davinder Singh Rana to prepare a report after talking to different sections of the society including traders, employees, tourism players, hoteliers and others.

“After holding deliberations with them, a report card will be prepared in which all the lies and facts on the ground will be brought to the fore. The report card will be prepared in one month,” the group had said.

However, over a month and half has elapsed, but the group has failed to bring the white paper out. Notably, it was the first utterance of the PAGD, which it failed to pursue on the ground.

A leader, who is part of the four-member group, told Precious Kashmir that the process to compile the report has not been started yet. “Soon after it was decided to compile a report, the PAGD leaders got busy in finalizing the candidates for the ongoing District Development Council (DDC) polls in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He added that the group has not even talked to any section of the society due to the busy schedule amid the elections. “As far as my knowledge is concerned, the process to compile the report has not been started yet,” he said, adding that the process to compile a report as promised would probably be started once the results of DDC elections are declared on December 22.

“We tried to meet people in Jammu over the issue but got less time to start the process in this regard as the alliance decided to take part in polls. It needs time to compile such reports. We are hopeful that the report will be completed and brought into the public domain as soon as possible,” he added.
