Govt signs MoU for skill development of students

Srinagar, Jan 11:  The government has taken skill development as a mission to create a pool of skilled workforce in the Union Territory, who can serve the nation both on local as well as on national levels.

For this purpose, Skill Development Department is exploring every possibility to get trained the local educated youth especially the students of different colleges and universities in the technologies having good market demand and accordingly, signed MoUs with several reputed National level organizations.

In this endeavour, the Government Polytechnic College (GPC), Baramulla has already established a Centre for Invention, Innovation, Incubation, and Training (CIIIT) in collaboration with Tata Technologies Ltd. Pune, for providing integrated training on technical and skill development and other disruptive technologies conforming to industry

Now the GPC, Baramulla has entered into an MOU with Islamic University of Science & Technology, Awantipora (IUST) aimed to up-skill the undergraduate and diploma students of IUST for providing high end practical oriented training, leading to their higher employability.

The purpose of this MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) is also to promote the culture of innovation, incubation, and entrepreneurship among the students, which will lead to the development of new products and technologies in the UT of J&K.

On behalf of the Skill Development Department, the MoU was signed by Er. Imtiaz Ahmad Shaw, Principal, Govt. Polytechnic College Baramulla while Prof. A.H. Moon, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology, signed it on behalf of IUST, in presence of  the Vice-Chancellor IUST, Prof. Mushtaq A. Siddiqi, Director, Skill Development Department, Sajad Hussain Ganai, Registrar, IUST, Prof Naseer Iqbal and H.O.D, Govt. Polytechnic College, Baramulla, Er. Pervaiz Bhat.

The event was an outcome of the understanding reached out between Vice-Chancellor Islamic University of Science & Technology, Awantipora, & Principal Secretary to Govt, Skill Development Department, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon.

Shopian Fake Encounter No system of cash awards: Army

Srinagar, Jan 11: Army on Monday said that there is no system of cash awards for its personnel for any acts in “combat situations or otherwise in the line of duty” as it rejected reports quoting police charge sheet that the accused army captain was driven by a Rs 20 Lakh award for killing of “terrorists” at Amshipora in Shopian district of south Kashmir on July 18.
“There are media reports quoting that Amshipora encounter actions were driven by a Rs 20 Lakh award for killing of terrorists. It is clarified that Indian Army has no system of cash awards for its personnel for any acts in combat situations or otherwise in the line of duty,” Col Rajesh Kalia, the defence spokesman based in Srinagar said in a statement said.
“The report is malafide (misleading ) and not based on facts of the processes internal to Indian Army,” he said without elaborating “facts of the processes of internal to Indian Army.”
On October 2, the bodies of the three victims–Abrar Ahmed (25), Imtiyaz Ahmed (20) and Mohammed Ibrar (16)— were exhumed in Baramulla and handed over to their families for burial in their native villages. The trio were killed in July 18 fake encounter at Amshipora, Shopian.
Earlier the army had said that its high-level Court of Inquiry brought out “certain prima facie evidence indicating that the powers vested under the AFSPA 1990 were exceeded during the operation.”
The Defence spokesman had said that inquiry has found that the “Do’s and Don’ts of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) as approved by the Supreme Court have been contravened”.
“Consequently, the competent disciplinary authority has directed to initiate disciplinary proceedings under the Army Act against those found prima-facie answerable,” he had said.
On July 18 last, police in a statement had said that three militants were killed in gunfight with joint team of police, army and CRPF in Shopian district on an input by army.
“On a specific input by 62RR about presence of (militants) in village Amshipora area, an operation was launched by them in the area,” a police spokesperson had said.
During search, he had said, the militants fired upon Army and encounter started. “Later on police and CRPF also joined. During encounter three unidentified militants were killed,” he had said in the statement, adding, “Bodies of all the killed three (militants) were retrieved from the site of encounter.” However, he had said, the identification and group affiliation of the slain was being ascertained.
“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter,” he had said.
On October 8 last, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the families of the trio and assured them “justice would be ensured.” (GNS)

 

CDS Rawat visits Ladakh to review situation

New Delhi, Jan 11:  Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat is on a visit to Ladakh to review the country’s overall military preparedness as thousands of Indian and Chinese troops remained deployed in a high state of combat readiness in various mountainous locations in the region amid the eight-month-long border standoff.

The visit of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to Ladakh comes days after he toured several key installations including “forward most air maintained” posts in Dibang Valley, Lohit sector and Subansiri valley near the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh.

“The CDS will review the overall security scenario in the eastern Ladakh region,” said a source.

Gen Rawat is also expected to travel to Kashmir from Ladakh on Tuesday.

Indian Army and the Indian Air Force(IAF) have been maintaining a high state of operational readiness along the nearly 3,500-km LAC with China in view of the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are deployed in various locations in eastern Ladakh as multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks between the two sides have not yielded any concrete outcome to resolve the faceoff. China has also deployed an equal number of troops, according to officials.

Army hands back Chinese soldier caught in Ladakh

New Delhi, Jan 11: The Indian Army on Monday handed back the apprehended Chinese soldier at Chushul-Moldo in eastern Ladakh.
The soldier was apprehend near Gurung hill in the Chushul sector on Friday morning.
“The PLA soldier who had been apprehended on 08 January 2021, has been handed back to China at Chushul – Moldo at 10.10 AM today,” an Indian Army official said here on Monday.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier had apparently lost his way and entered the Indian territory inadvertently.
In an official statement, the Indian Army had said the Chinese soldier was apprehended on the Indian side during the early hours of Friday. He was taken into custody by the Indian Army.
“The PLA soldier had transgressed across the LAC and was taken into custody by Indian troops deployed in this area. Troops from either side are deployed along the LAC since friction erupted last year due to unprecedented mobilisation and forward concentration by Chinese troops,” the Indian Army said.
The army said the Chinese soldier is “being dealt with as per laid down procedures”.
In October 2020, the Army had captured a PLA soldier, identified as Corporal Wang Ya Long, near Demchok area of Ladakh.
The PLA soldier was carrying civil and military documents when he was captured in Ladakh by the Indian Army.
Corporal Wang Ya Long was provided medical assistant after he was captured and was handed back to China a day later on October 21.

Govt unveils rules for reservation of DDC seats

Srinagar, Jan 11: Setting the stage for election for chairpersons of district development councils in Jammu & Kashmir, the government on Monday unveiled rules for reservation of these seats.
According to a notification issued by the department of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj-1989, a copy of which is in possession of news agency- Kashmir News Observer, one third of the total number of seats for the offices of chairperson of district development council shall be reserved for women.
The allocation of seats of chairperson to be reserved for women shall be made on a three -point roster system after arranging them alphabetically.
As per the roster, the first and second seat shall be open while the third seat shall be reserved for women.
According to the rules, the offices of chairpersons of the district development councils shall be reserved for the scheduled castes and scheduled Tribes and shall bear, as nearly as may be, the same proportion to the total number of such offices in the district development councils as the population of scheduled caste in the Union Territory or of the scheduled tribes in the Union Territory bears to the total population of the Union Territory by applying the principles of mathematic round off with the part fraction of 0.5 and above be rounded off to 1 and part fraction below 0.5 being ignored for the each district Development council separately.
“The number of seats of chairpersons to be reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled Tribes shall be allotted to different district development councils on the basis of population of scheduled castes and scheduled Tribes in such district development councils in the descending order, i.e. from amongst all the district development councils in the Union Territory, the district development council having the largest population of scheduled tribe shall be allotted to the scheduled tribes category and the district development council having the largest population of the scheduled castes population shall be allowed to scheduled castes category,” reads the rules.
Going by the rules, the State Election Commission will soon issue an order for reservation of offices of chairpersons of DCCs in accordance with these rules—(KNO)

 

PDP leader Waheed Parra arrested again

Srinagar, Jan 11: PDP leader Waheed Parra, who was granted bail by an NIA court on Saturday, was arrested by J&K police on Monday, officials said.
The case was registered by the Criminal Investigation (Kashmir) range which has been probing militancy cases and has filed over two dozen FIRs.
Parra was produced before a court in Jammu which remanded him to police custody till January 18, the officials said, adding he would be brought to Srinagar for questioning.
He was arrested by the NIA on November 25 in a case related to his alleged links with Hizbul Mujahideen.
Parra, who recently won District Development Council (DDC) polls from his hometown in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, was granted relief on a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh and a personal bond of the like amount, the officials said.
However, he was whisked away by sleuths of CIK as he came out of the Jammu district jail upon being released, but it was not immediately clear whether he was wanted in any other case or detained for questioning.
PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti had expressed concern over his detention and sought intervention of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for securing his release.
“Despite NIA court granting bail to @parawhid after thorough court proceedings, he has now been detained by CIK in Jammu. Under what law & for what crime has he been arrested? This is brazen contempt of court. Request @manojsinha_ji to intervene so that justice is served,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Teacher, sarpanch among 3 die of cardiac arrest

Srinagar, Jan 11: A teacher and a sarpanch were among three persons died due to cardiac arrest during the past 24 hours in the Kashmir valley, where doctors have already advised people suffering from heart ailment to take extra precaution in winter, when chances of sudden heart attacks increases due to severe cold.
With these deaths, a total of 13 persons, mostly youth, died due to cardiac arrest in the valley during the past about ten days.
A private school teacher identified as Mohammad Ramzan Rather suffered a cardiac arrest at his Sheikh Mohalla Ajas, Bandipora, home on Monday morning. However, other family members immediately rushed him to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Sarpanch identified as Shaban Shah, a resident of Bon-Numbal, Mattan in south Kashmir district of Anantnag died due to massive cardiac arrest at his home on Sunday.
A health employee identified as Abdul Aziz Bhat also suffered a massive cardiac arrest at his home at village Durpora in Anantnag. He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) president Dr Nissar ul Hassan and other experts have warned increase in the heart attacks in the valley during winter due to severe cold. However, they expressed concern over the increase in the heart attacks among the youth.

Boy injured in cross-LoC firing in Poonch

Poonch, Jan 11: 12-year-old boy was injured as armies of India and Pakistan exchanged fire along the Line of Control in Mendhar area of Poonch district on Monday.
An official said that Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation and fired on army positions and civilian areas in Mendhar sector of Poonch district, resulting in injuries to Jahangir Ahmed (12) son o Abdul Kabir of Mandhar.
The injured boy has been hospitalized.

5.1 quake jolts JK

Srinagar, Jan 11: An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude on the Richter Scale hit Kishwar district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Strong tremors were felt in Kishtwar and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
“Earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred and epicenter — 33.29N, 75.52E, near Kistwar,” according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
No casualties due to the earthquake have been reported so far.

KU exams scheduled on Jan 12, 13 postponed

Srinagar, Jan 11: The Kashmir University’s Controller of Examinations Prof Irshad A Nawchoo said the varsity’s undergraduate examinations scheduled to be held on January 12 (Tuesday) and January 13 (Wednesday) are postponed.

The revised date-sheet for these postponed papers, as well as all other papers of UG exams postponed previously, will be notified shortly and will be available on the University website, he said.(KINS)
