Save Bleeding Poultry Industry

No case of avian influenza has been confirmed hitherto in Jammu and Kashmir. However, as per Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, there has been “unnatural mortality” of birds reported in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The ministry’s statement is vague as did not confirm or rule out avian influenza. It also brings into question if enough tests are being done to verify or exclude with certainty influenza which has already threatened the poultry industry.

The official statements made here imply that the situation was under control even as the administration was ready to tackle any challenge as may arise due to the bird flu.

There are almost 1.5 Lakh birds of different species presently stationed at Hokersar— the largest and most prominent of wetlands in Kashmir— for breeding as well as winter nesting.

Recently teams of experts visited and collected 21 samples from the wetland and forwarded same to High Security Animal Disease Lab, Bhopal and RDDL Jalandhar for further testing. Also surveillance samples were collected from Dal Lake and adjoining areas. While reports are awaited, the wildlife authorities have categorically stated that no death has been reported in Hokersar or elsewhere. Even in absence of any confirmed influenza-related death, the poultry industry has been already hit, second time in little over a year. In March-April 2020, the industry was hit by a lockdown and expected to recover the losses during the winter. However, already prices of poultry products have plunged by 40-60 % in the past week as bird flu has spread in India. The centre has already asked states and UTs to ensure that the infection does not spread among poultry, as it would have a high economic cost for the poultry farmers. On January 13 last, it also urged states and UTs to reconsider the decision as regards the ban on imports from other states, underlining it would “add negative impact on the poultry industry.” While the Jammu-Srinagar highway is closed and is unlikely to reopen any time soon, the J&K government’s decision on continuing with the import ban beyond January 14 or withdrawing it on the asking of the centre seems immaterial for now. However, what is important for the J&K government is to ensure that the spread is contained. While highway closure may limit the poultry imports from states affected by the virus, it is impossible to stop migratory birds from flying into J&K. It is thus imperative for the J&K Government to do more sample checks at the wintering sites to catch the disease early and prevent it from reaching the poultry farms.

Highway Closure: Hoarders create artificial scarcity, airfares skyrocket

Officials say stocks can last for 10-15 days
Afaq Bhat
Srinagar, Jan 14: The closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway has led to the prices of commodities and airfare shooting up in Kashmir.
According to the details available with Precious Kashmir the news about highway closure for 5 to 10 days has led to hoarders creating “artificial scarcity” of many essential items in the market.
It’s not for the first time that the highway closure has led to the skyrocketing of the prices of commodities and airfares. It happens every year.
“We cannot even bargain with the shopkeepers and the vendors. We get a befitting reply if you want to buy on this rate, buy otherwise leave it. Same is the case with air tickets. The air carriers have fixed the rates as per their whims and wishes,” said Fayaz Ahmed of Baghat Barzulla.
He said, “People are facing a very difficult situation as the demand of items has increased and supply is less. People who want to move out of the Valley for one or other purpose have to pay the exorbitant airfare. On the other hand people have to pay through their nose for the essential commodities as the life cannot run without these items.”
According to the dealers and distributors the extended closure of the highway has depleted the stock of vegetables and fruits in the Valley for which the highway. “Parimpora Mandi is empty now. There is no stock of perishable items in this whole sale market. Whatever surplus like onions and potatoes we had after the snowfall has almost finished,” said a trader.
It’s in place to mention here that on the evening of January 10, just two days after the highway was opened following the heavy snowfall across J&K, a retaining wall of the bridge at Kela Morh in Ramban collapsed leading to another highway closure. “One fails to understand that why do stocks of non-perishable items also disappear just within few days of the highway getting blocked,” asked Mushtaq Ahmed of Nowgam.
A top official of the Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department Kashmir said that the Valley has enough stock of food grains to last for two months, gas for 15 days, petrol and diesel for 8-10 days. He advised people to opt for dry vegetables if the stocks deplete further.
According to the officials over 8,500 vehicles including empty and fruit laden trucks are stranded on the Kashmir side of the highway. “Most of these drivers are spending their nights in their vehicles. These vehicles cannot move till the Ramban bridge is restored or Bailey bridge becomes functional,” the official added.
An official of a private airline company said that airfares cannot change till the demand for the tickets declines. “We are helpless the decisions about the fares are taken by the higher ups. We have no role to play in it,” he added.

Srinagar records coldest night in 30 years at – 8.4 degree

Parts of Dal freeze; SEOC warns against walking on frozen water bodies
Precious Kashmir News
Srinagar, Jan 14: The water bodies including famed Dal Lake froze on Thursday as Srinagar recorded the coldest night in 30 years with the mercury dropping at minus 8.4 degrees celsius.
A Met department spokesperson said the city recorded the coldest night of the season so far at minus 8.4 degree, which is the coldest in 30 years.
The city recorded minus 11.3 degree in 1991 while the lowest minimum temperature recorded ever in Srinagar was minus 14.4 degree in 1893.
In 1995, the night temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 8.3 degree.
Due to mercury dropping many degrees below freezing point, the water bodies including portion of famed Dal Lake froze today.
The boys and youngsters were seen playing cricket on the frozen Dal party. Some people and tourists also walked on the frozen portion of Dal Lake and clicked their pictures and videos.
The Shikarawalas found it difficult to move through frozen parts of the Dal Lake. They had to break the ice to make way for their boats.
People in some areas burnt wood to unfreeze the frozen water pipes. People in many areas including in outskirts of Srinagar complained of water shortage.
“Our taps were frozen due to chill,” they said and hoped that things may improve as the day progresses.
It was in 1965 when the entire lake was frozen and a jeep crossed the frozen surface from one end to another end. In the late 80s and 90s, the frozen lake became a major attraction for tourists and locals, who used to take photographs and play cricket on the icy surface. Later, walking and playing on the frozen surface of the lake was banned and police personnel used to be deployed to prevent any accident.
Meanwhile, State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) Srinagar has warned people against walking on the frozen water bodies.
SEOC Nodal Officer Aamir Ali said it has been observed that some people, particularly youth and children, attempt to walk on the frozen water bodies.
“Moving on this thin layer of frozen water, particularly Dal Lake is very risky and can result in slips, falls, fractures and fatal injuries,” he said.
Aamir said when the thickness of ice is less than 4 inches, it is very unsafe to walk, or play and the ice can break resulting in drowning. “There are many springs inside Dal Lake and the ice is very thin at these spots and it is difficult to spot these locations while walking or playing on the frozen surface”
District Magistrate and Chairman District Disaster Management Authority, Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary also issued an advisory to dissuade people from walking, playing or moving on frozen Dal Lake.
Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of J&K SDRF and River Police were deployed in Dal Lake, as a precautionary measure. (Additional inputs from UNI)

Chill intensifies; Pahalgam freezes at minus 11.1 degree

Srinagar, Jan 11: The chilly weather conditions have further intensified with the Mercury during the night settling several degrees below freezing point across Kashmir valley, where world famous health resort of Pahalgam was the coldest place at minus 11.1 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said the weather will remain dry during the next four days in Kashmir valley. “Due to open skies, the minimum temperature is expected to dip further though day temperature is expected to improve due to sunshine,” he added.
Even though there was slight improvement in the night temperature, Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, was the coldest place at minus 11.1 degree, which is 4 degree below normal.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the only place in the valley where the minimum temperature settled above normal. Against minus 10 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature at the ski resort settled at minus 7 degree, which is about a degree above normal. “Despite chilly weather conditions due to ice cold winds, the tourists are out on ski slopes enjoying different snow related activities. All the ski slopes have been thrown open for tourists,” a hotelier from Gulmarg told UNI over the phone.
The night temperature at Qazigind, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag dipped and settled at minus 10 degree, minus 6.7 degree and minus 10.3 degree, respectively.

Highway remains closed for 4th day

Will take 3 days to setup Bailey Bridge in Ramban : BRO
Precious Kashmir News
Srinagar, Jan 14: The 270 kms long Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for 4th successive day on Thursday and Border Roads Organization (BRO) said it would complete setting of Bailey bridge near Kela Morh in next three days to restore connectivity between the twin capital cities.
A portion of the highway sank near Kela Morh in Ramban district after a concrete retaining wall of a bridge collapsed on Sunday evening.
The bailey bridge is being launched by BRO, as an interim measure, to restore connectivity between Srinagar and Jammu.
Commanding Officer 99 RCC Vinyak Project Beacon said it will take two to three days more to setup Bailey bridge.
“Heavy vehicles carrying essential supplies can also be allowed to cross over the bridge,” he said.
He said it will provide relief to the hundreds of vehicles carrying essentials to cross into the valley.
Officials of National Highway Authority of India, the road construction and maintaining agency, had earlier said that the “Repairing by concrete filling and settling of the concrete for making it (highway) motorable may take approximately 10 days”.
Today was the 4th day of closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Over 5000 vehicles, including those carrying essentials and oil tankers, remained stranded at different places on the highway.
Several thousand empty trucks, oil and gas tankers are stranded on this side of the Jawahar tunnel.
A passenger who was travelling in his car alongwith wife, two children and mother said they had to return back to Banihal after the bridge was damaged.
“However, on Monday we travelled from Banihal to Kela Morh bridge and later crossed a nallah on foot to reach other side, where vehicles were available for Ramban. Similarly other passengers from both sides also crossed the nallah on foot to reach other side before boarding vehicles for their destination. However, the passenger alleged that they were charged Rs 300 per person from Banihal to Kela Bridge. There was nobody from the administration to guide the stranded passengers,” he alleged and said only few police personnel had blocked the road from both sides of the bridge.
The historic 86-km-long Mughal road and Anantnag-Kishtwar roads remained shut since last week of December, 2020 due to accumulation of snow while the highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir has been closed for winter months.
Due to the continued closure of only road link connecting Kashmir with rest of the world, the prices of essential commodities and vegetables has gone up in Valley. (KNS)
