Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir LG’s Advisor Baseer Ahmed Khan Monday said that as the temperatures will rise across the country in the next few months, J&K is all set to witness a bumper tourism season as a record number of tourists are expected to visit Kashmir and explore its beauty and hospitality.

Addressing the two-brainstorming conference on Tapping the Tourism Potential—Another Day in Paradise—at SKICC here, Advisor Khan said that the conference is all set to end on a very fruitful, constructive and positive note. “There will be a roadmap after thorough deliberations on how to promote Kashmir’s tourism potential and the road map will be followed in spirit,” he said.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic posed a big challenge for the J&K UT administration last year but the administration decided to move ahead to promote tourism knowing the fact that Tourism industry is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy.

“A series of roadshows were conducted and webinars held to lure tourists and promote Kashmir’s rich culture, tradition, ethos and tourism potential,” he said and expressed his satisfaction that the plan worked as the Valley saw record number of tourists coming since December 2020 to March 2021. “I am glad to put it on record that there was a huge tourist influx in Kashmir during winters. Jammu areas too witnessed a good number of tourist arrivals which encouraged the UT administration to go further to resurrect the tourism industry.”

Hoping the number of tourist arrivals will increase manifold in the next three to four months, Advisor Khan said that when the rest of the states in India would blister in the scorching heat, Kashmir would witness tourism boom. “Temperatures will rise across India in coming months and we are witnessing record number of tourist arrivals and bumper tourism season in summers,” he said.

Advisor Khan said new tourist destinations are being explored and there is a long list before the UT administration. “Our primary focus is to ensure basic infrastructure at the new tourist destinations so that tourists enjoy their stay hassle free,” he said.

Advisor Khan said that to facility the trekkers, trekking routes are being repaired across the UT to provide a better chance for the tourist to trek on slopes and mountains of Kashmir. “We will soon showcase new tourist places across the UT as steps to put in place infrastructure are afoot,” he said. Advisor Khan thanked the Ministry of Tourism Government of India for extra funding and all out support in promoting tourism in J&K UT and also LG Sinha for extending his full support in making Kashmir once again a safe heaven for tourists. Advisor Khan assured the gathering that at all tourist destinations and also at the airports, railway stations, road travel points, there will be strict adherence to Covid protocols and no one will be allowed to violate the same—(KNO)

No proposal with DMA to close coaching centres

By: Bhat Imran

Srinagar: Following the closure of schools in Jammu and Kashmir, the disaster management authorities on Monday said that there was no proposal in the pipeline to close the private coaching institutions to carry academics online.

However, the parents of those wards studying in private coaching centers fear repercussions amid a spike in COVID-19 cases saying that the students are more vulnerable of getting infected because of huge enrolments.

One of the parents Manzoor Ahmad said the government must take some accountability in regulating the private coaching institutes amid a spike in COVID-19 cases and considering the health of the students.

“As per the government, either the risk of students getting infected remains confined to the schools only or there is no risk of getting COVID-19 infected out there in private coaching institutes wherein the student enrolment is multiple times more than the schools,” Ahmad questioned.

Another parent Abdul Majeed said that the disaster management authorities seem to be least bothered about the students studying in private coaching institutes as dozens of students are being taught in a one room and there is no accountability on it.

Majeed said, “As compared to schools, the student enrolment in private coaching has very high enrolment and there is extra risk for students in getting Coronavirus infected.”

Meanwhile, officials of disaster management said there was no proposal with the government to announce that the private coaching institutes will function online.

“As of now, there is no proposal in the pipeline with the disaster management authorities to close the private coaching institutions to carry academics online,” the official said.

Mehbooba appeals youth to shun violence

‘PDP to fight for restoration of special status’

Srinagar, April 12: Appealing youth to lay down arms and shun the path of violence, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said they (youth) should present their views democratically.

The former chief minister said that her part will continue to fight for the restoration of special status of J&K, despite huge pressure being put on her by using various agencies.

Mehbooba said that Pakistan and India has to listen to the people of the J&K and resolve the issue, keeping in view the aspirations of the locals.

“Some people want that the youth of J&K should pickup guns so that they are dubbed as militants in front of the world. I appeal such youth to lay down arms and not to waste their lives. They should put forward their views democratically… they may not listen to their views right now. But ultimately India and Pakistan will have to resolve all issues, including Kashmir, in accordance with the aspirations of the people of J&K,” Mehbooba told reporters in the sideline of a party function here on Monday.

“If the PM appeals to militants of Assam to join the mainstream and leave their weapons… if talks are held with Boro (Bodo), then what is the difficulty in doing the same in Jammu and Kashmir? Why is there no option besides jail? How long will this injustice continue?” she said.

The PDP president said that the special status to the erstwhile state of J&K was given by the Indian Constitution. “This special status was not given by China or Pakistan. Why is the BJP government pained when we seek its restoration? We had acceded to India on certain conditions and one of them was to protect our identity,” she said.

Mehbooba said that the centre will have to restore the special status of J&K. “You will have to return what you have snatched from the people, if you really care for them,” she added.

Answering a question, PDP chief said Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) was created to restore the special status of J&K. “PAGD is intact… if anything happens to it, who will become the voice of the people? PAGD is there to stay and raise issues pertaining to the people,” she said.
