Impose strict Covid lockdown in Kashmir or lift it completely, BJP to admin

Srinagar: Alleging that people of Kashmir are confused about implementation of COVID curfew because it is not applicable on ground, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday urged the administration to either impose the lockdown properly or completely lift it.

BJP Kashmir Media In-charge and youth leader Manzoor Bhat said that it is unfortunate that despite lockdown, heavy traffic jams were witnessed in Srinagar city. “It shows how city administration has failed completely to curb the COVID-19 infections”.

Bhat urged Lt Governor Administration to either impose a strict lockdown or lift all the restrictions in Kashmir. “Passenger vehicles are openly violating the COVID-19 guidelines and lockdown has been only restricted to the closing of shops,” he alleged.

“Our worthy Deputy Commissioner Srinagar is not capable of imposing lockdown, he should learn from his predecessor. Lockdown is not restricted for traders and shopkeepers… why are public and private vehicles plying openly,” he questioned.

“On one hand, there is a strict lockdown on papers and on the other hand same administration is proving curfew passes for public transport vehicles. Both police and administration should look into this issue immediately,” he said.

Bhat said the BJP had recently announced grievance helpline numbers for distressed people and they are trying their best to reach out to them through various means, including oxygen cylinders, medicine, and other things. “At some places, we need some help from the local administration and it is unfortunate that the DC Srinagar is not responding to several phone calls from the BJP office. The calls were not meant to gain personal favor but were made for public work,” he said.

Valuing covid-19 warriors

The present covid-19 pandemic is arguably the most devastating public health crises India has ever seen, and systemic failures are apparent all around. Jammu and Kashmir is no exception.  The pandemic has put entire health systems under immense pressure and stretched it to capacity, almost to the breaking point. As such, responding to this public health emergency and successfully minimizing its impact requires every health resource to be leveraged. Amid this crisis, the role of every “covid warrior” has been immense. Last year, they even faced acts of violence and as a consequence severely hindered the response. Some even faced stigma as they were dubbed as vectors of contagion. Some have been assaulted. Others were denied even transport while commuting to work. At times, their entire families faced eviction, not only from rented accommodations but even from their homes. Since then, things have changed for the better as far as attacks are concerned. However, it is not the case that the covid warriors are altogether safe. They continue to put their life on the line. The pestilence can be contracted by them as much as any ordinary individual. It is thus imperative that the government ensures better protection along with availability of all that they need to ward off against the virus. Failure to protect them in this rapidly changing context exposes health systems to critical gaps in services when they are most needed, and can have a long-lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of populations. From doctors, nurses, lab technicians, drivers, sweepers and attendants, who have been at the forefront of the battle against the coronavirus disease, to members from different organs of the administration and departments need to be protected and their role appreciated.

Recognizing it, the government has already announced incentives of Rs 10,000 p.m. for Resident doctors, PGs and Medical Officers; Rs 7,000 p.m. for Nursing and Paramedical staff, and Rs 5,000 p.m. for drivers, sweepers and attendants.

The administration also extended till December 31 the services of all doctors who are due to retire on or before November 30. Besides, the tenure of doctors on tenure posts such as residents, registrars etc has been extended till 31st December wherever these tenures are ending earlier. These steps are in the right direction and rather need to be augmented. While incentives will surely be a morale booster, the government has also rightly valued the experience of the medical professionals to effectively deal with the evolving Covid situation.

Third COVID wave may grip India in Oct-Nov, predict experts

By: Afaq Bhat

Srinagar: As the country grapples with the second wave of COVID-19, experts have predicted that India is likely to face the third wave of the pestilence in October-November this year.

According to the media reports the second wave will flatten by July after peaking in May and recur by October 2021.

Chief of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of Karnataka, Dr MK Sudarshan has said that the younger population would be more affected by third wave. “Fully vaccinated senior citizens would be safe by then. Those below 18 years would be most vulnerable,” he has claimed.

An expert while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Vaccination is the only way out. Process needs to be expedited. At present the inoculation drive is open for all above 18 years of age. It needs to be thrown open for children also. The government needs to procure more and more vaccines. People too should realize that taking a COVID-19 jab is the only way out and it cannot be ignored.”

He said, “The people who had got vaccinated and tested positive for COVID-19 in the second wave didn’t develop much complications. It has proven beyond doubt that vaccinations have helped. These hold the key to developing herd immunity.”

The expert said, “The alarm about the third wave has already been sounded and it should not be taken lightly. The children below 18-years need to be protected and a mechanism needs to be put in place to wipe out the COVID-19 from the system. This pandemic has ripped us apart.”

He said, “The experts had sounded an alert about the second wave as early as February this year but people didn’t take it seriously. Most of us had become complacent and had declared victory against the COVID-19 too early. We need to learn from our past mistakes.”

The government had recently stated that the process is on to acquire the Russian vaccine Sputnik and it would also become available in the open market soon. “Things are looking up but we have to take precautions till we defeat the virus completely. In Kashmir lockdown has been enforced and people are being asked to stay at home. We have to exhibit patience as being patient is the only way out. Rushing to hospitals won’t help our cause. The health facilities are already overburdened. We need to keep the hospitals open for the critical COVID-19 patients. Resilience is the only way out,”
