Health workers, doctors stage protest against Baba Ramdev

Pulwama: Doctors on Tuesday held protest demonstrations across Valley. Health workers and doctors demanded strict action against Baba Ramdev for his controversial remarks over allopathy.

The protest was held in all Kashmir districts including Srinagar. The protesting doctors and health workers, while speaking to news agency Kashmir News Trust, said that Baba Ramdev has no right to speak ill of allopathy and demanded an ‘unconditional’ apology from the Yoga Guru.

President of one of the factions of DAK, Mohammad Yousuf Tak resented the recent controversial statement of Baba Ramdev, saying the Baba was attempting to promote his own business by projecting medicos and scientific medicine as inefficient.

“He has humiliated medical fraternity openly and created mistrust among the masses over scientific medicine and doctors. He should not be let go and appropriate action should be taken against Baba Ramdev,” he told KNT.

In South Kashmir’s Pulwama district the protest demonstration was held in the premises of Mohammadia Nursing Home in Gangoo. The private Nursing Home was requisitioned by the district administration after District Hospital Pulwama was declared as a Covid-dedicated hospital in May.

It is pertinent to mention that doctors across the country are observing a Black Day in protest against the remarks made by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on allopathy and modern medicine.

Staff at several hospitals nationwide held demonstrations, holding placards and calling for the arrest of the founder of Patanjali Ayurved. Medical associations have also sought an “unconditional open public apology” from him for his remarks.

Issuing a call for protest on May 29, the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) had emphasised that healthcare services will not be hampered due to the stir. (KNT)

In a tweet, Mr Kejriwal said, ‘I am glad 12th exams have been cancelled. All of us were very worried abt the health of our children. A big relief.’

The Centre decided to cancel the CBSE class 12th board exams for the year 2021 over the current COVID-19 situation in the country.

The decision was taken during a review meeting regarding the Class XII Board exams of CBSE which

was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“In view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders, it was decided that Class XII Board Exams would not be held this year,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

The Prime Minister said the decision has been taken in the interest of students.

Earlier, before the review meeting regarding the Class XII Board exams of CBSE, Mr Kejriwal had appealed the Centre to cancel the upcoming CBSE Class 12 board exams as the students have not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Children and parents are worried about the 12th examination. They want that 12th examination should not be held without vaccinating the students. Arrest Suicides

The Kashmiri language does not have a word for suicide. Not a long ago, it was compared with places like Kuwait where the suicide rate is amongst the lowest in the world. Of late, things seem to be changing for the worse as there has been a substantial increase in such tendencies. In some cases, the hidden trauma of life comes to fore and what unfolds is nothing but heart-wrenching.  In such an incident recently, a young man, a B.Tech., from Avial village of Manzgam in D H Pora area Kulgam gulped some poisonous substance before recording a video, citing alleged reasons to take such an extreme step. Even though he was immediately hospitalized, he died on Saturday last, a day after consuming the poison substance.

For him, it was not a suicide but a sacrifice made for all the families who have been subjected to trauma due to the denial of salary to bread earners by the government for years.

“My father has been denied salary for past over two years and we are living a miserable life. There are many more teachers like him. So, I am sacrificing myself for all those so that they get their due,” the young man is heard saying in a hushed tone in the video which later went viral.

The death of a child is the worst nightmare for the parents, one made even worse when it is self-inflicted. Such an incident should not have happened in the first place and when the inevitable has happened now, the government being a welfare-state must probe the reasons and take measures to avoid repetition in future.

The government has responsibility for “every” citizen and ensuring all people get their due must be its focus.

Also as society, everyone including parents, teachers, clinicians, officers and politicians should be asking why and what they can do to prevent it. Covid-19 has had a debilitating effect on livelihood. In such a situation, suicidal tendencies are growing among the people, especially those who have had a severe impact on their livelihoods or those who have lost dear ones. The future that is no longer certain. The economic condition of the people may get worse while inequality may increase as the vast majority of the people are tipped to get poorer, deeper in debt and unhappy. While no one can say with precision why suicide has become such a crisis among the people especially young, there are several factors elucidated by the various experts which the administration need to work out and address the issue with a reasonable haste.

Kashmir Unlocks: Complacency won’t help, precautions only way to keep COVID-19 at bay

By: Afaq Bhat

Srinagar: The unlock process has commenced in Kashmir. Markets will reopen in phased manner and public transport has been allowed to ply with half capacity, but the experts have reiterated that COVID-19 is far from over and it can resurface without any intimation.

A medico while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The lockdown helped in reducing the number of cases as it stopped the transmission of virus. People should bear in mind that the COVID-19 is still everywhere and normalcy has not been restored yet. They cannot be complacent. Nor can they take anything for granted. As on date many hospitals are full and new cases are being reported on a daily basis.”

He said, “One can understand that the economy has taken a hit but people need to bear in mind that the situation is beyond anyone’s control as till date no cure has been developed to treat the virus.  Mortality rate is not that high but still people continue to die and are getting infected. Precaution is better than cure. People have to bear in mind that the time is not ripe to move around. They need to restrict their movement to keep themselves safe.”

A businessman said, “The government by lifting the restrictions in a phased manner has paved the way for the revival of the economy. But we need to act responsibly to prevent the situation from turning ugly again. We are caught in a difficult situation and we will have to fight it by taking precautions.”

He said that the business community has suffered immense losses during the past two years. “Many traders and businessmen have closed their shops and establishments as they couldn’t survive the onslaught of the virus. The government needs to think about us so that we are able to revive our ventures that are in doldrums,” the businessman said.

Another doctor said, “We have to observe how the virus will behave after lifting of the lockdown. If the cases increase then the restrictions will have to be re-imposed, but if the people follow the SOPs and take precautions the situation can improve and life and COVID-19 can go along.”

“There has been a decline in the number of cases but still the threat is there and these can rise if we lower the guard. We are hoping that the situation will improve as during the past one month many people have got vaccinated and masses have started realizing that virus can only be defeated by developing herd immunity. Let’s hope that normalcy returns and the pandemic ends.”

‘Unnecessary’ referrals putting huge burden on MCH Anantnag

Hospital authorities ring a bell for DC’s intervention, CMO denies complaints

By: Ahmed Shabir

Anantnag: Theunnecessary and unjustified’ referrals to Maternity and Child Hospital (MCH) Anantnag is putting a huge burden on the hospital amid the prevalent Covid situation across Jammu and Kashmir, the hospital administration has said in a letter to Deputy Commissioner(DC) Anantnag.

In a letter addressed to DC Anantnag, MCH authorities have stated that the unnecessary referrals of pregnant women from Sub District Hospitals without being tested for Covid have been overburdening the hospital. “These referrals are making it difficult for MCH authorities to tackle the huge patient rush at the space starved health facility.”

To stop or at least minimize the ‘unjustified’ referrals, the MCH authorities have sought intervention of Deputy Commissioner Anantnag and urged him to direct the district health authorities to monitor the healthcare activities by the field staff so that patients do not suffer.

The sole maternity and child hospital of south Kashmir is functioning from an unsafe building located in congested Sherbagh locality. The building besides having been declared unsafe is also facing the severe space crunch. The hospital caters to the patients from almost all the four southern districts besides parts of Jammu including Banihal and Kishtwar in summers. The hospital for the last two years has been working under the administrative control of medical college Anantnag.

Though the authorities have decided to shift the hospital to a trust owned Rahmat-e-Alam hospital which had been taken over by the government along with its liabilities and assets four years ago, the construction of the same still remains incomplete.

Sources in the hospital said that the unnecessary referrals from sub-district hospitals and even district hospital Kulgam is not only troubling the doctors but further agonizing the patients who develop complications but are referred to Srinagar for non-availability of beds at the facility.

“We receive dozens of patients on a daily basis who can be managed at SDHs easily. As a result of these unnecessary referrals we many a time are forced to refer those complicated cases needing immediate care to Srinagar due to the non-availability of beds,” a para-medic at MCH told Precious Kashmir.

Deputy Medical Superintendent of MCH, Dr Mir Ji Andrabi has also voiced his concern in a detailed letter to DC Anantnag, Dr Piyush Singla seeking his intervention in stopping the unnecessary referrals from other hospitals.

In the letter which is in possession of Precious Kashmir, Dr Andrabi rued that the staff at the peripheral institutions like SDHs and PHCs come to duties late and leave early.

“These hospitals refer even normal patients who can be easily managed there to MCH,” the letter reads.

In the letter the MS has also given details about the normal deliveries and C-sections conducted at the facility since last year.

“3296 C sections and 2551 normal deliveries have been performed at the hospital in 2020-2021 with 231 only in the month of April. 90 percent of these surgeries were uncomplicated,” the letter reads.

In the letter, MS further complains that the staff in these hospitals do not even conduct the COVID-19 tests of these pregnant women which becomes a continued source of infection.

The letter has been copied to the Director Health Kashmir and CMO Anantnag.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Anantnag, Dr Mukhtar denied that SDHs and PHCs are referring such patients to MCH.

“Our hospitals have performed two times more deliveries than MCH in the last two years. Many patients from rural areas prefer to deliver at MCH either normally or through C section as they think it has more facilities available. This hospital is like LD for south Kashmir and our doctors in rural areas cannot stop patients from going to MCH,” CMO told Precious Kashmir.

He said that MS of the MCH has written such letters in the past as well.

Hustle-bustle returns as Govt eases curbs in J&K

Srinagar: After a month-long Corona curfew, the shops and business establishments reopened on Monday as the process of partial unlocking started across Jammu and Kashmir, including summer capital, Srinagar.

However, class work remained suspended as educational institutes — including schools, colleges, universities and private coaching centres — have been directed to remain closed till June 15 in the valley.

The suspension of train service between Baramulla in north Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region has also been extended till June 9. All cinema halls, multiplexes, clubs, gyms, spas and paid parks would also remain closed till further orders in the valley, where weekend and night curfew would continue.

According to the unlock guidelines issued by the authorities, shops will remain open on alternate days in the valley while public transport was allowed to ply at 50 per cent seat capacity in Orange category districts and remained shut, expect three wheelers, in Red category districts.

Five districts in Kashmir—Pulwama, Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara and Budgam—have been placed in Red category districts while the remaining five—Srinagar, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Shopian and Kulgam – belong to Orange category districts.

The ease in the lockdown has come in the backdrop of decline of about 7 per cent in the number of COVID-19 positive cases from 13 per cent to 6.2 per cent during the last two weeks in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

All the roads and market places, including Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital reopened on Monday after remaining sealed to prevent movement of people since April 29.

However, shops were allowed to open on one side while the business establishments on the other side of the road remained closed in compliance of the recent government order in Lal Chowk and other markers in Srinagar, where public transport, including cabs, hit the roads though very less in number after over a month.

Barring 96 containment zones, shops and businesses established reopened while traffic was plying in most of the roads in downtown, civil lines, uptown in Srinagar. “COVID lockdown will continue in the 96 containment zones in the city. Shopkeepers and transporters should display COVID vaccination certificates and adhere to coronavirus appropriate behavior,” Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad said on Monday.

Standalone shops of all types have been allowed to open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the city, where outdoor Bazaars and Outdoor Shopping complexes shall be allowed to operate on Mondays and Thursdays. Markets having shops on both sides of the road will function on a rotational basis following which business establishments on one-side will be allowed to open on one day and the other side on another day. However, in some areas, particularly in downtown Srinagar, the guidelines were not being followed as shops were open on both sides of the road with shopkeepers alleging that they were not informed about the roster.

Shops and business establishment reopened after a month and public transport was plying on most of the roads in other four Orange category districts — Ganderbal, Bandipora, Shopian and Kulgam.

An order issued by Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, said that barring three wheelers, public transport will not ply on roads in the district, which is in Red Category districts. “Shops will remain open between 1000 hrs to 1900 hrs as per the roster,” it read.

According to this roster, each category of the business establishments — including readymade garments, electronics, Jewelers, furnishing, stationary etc — will remain open for about eight days on different days in June. But, shops dealing with essential commodities will remain open on all days in Baramulla, where night between 2000 hrs to 0700 hrs the next day and weekend curfew between 2000 hrs on Friday and 0700 hrs on Monday would continue.

Similar ease in restrictions have been given in other four Red Category districts — Pulwama, Anantnag, Kupwara and Budgam, where shops and business establishments reopened according to the roster on Monday after a month-long lockdown.

Since April 29, the lockdown was extended four times in the valley amid an unabated rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. On April 29, the Jammu and Kashmir administration imposed curfew in 11 districts to curtail the spread of COVID-19, which was subsequently extended to all the 20 districts in the Union Territory the next day. The curfew that was supposed to end on May 3 was extended in Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla and Jammu till May 6.

However, the Deputy Commissioners of the remaining seven districts in the valley extended the lockdown till May 6 separately. The COVID curfew was later extended till May 10 and then till May 17. The lockdown was again extended till May 24 and then till May 31 morning by the administration.

The administration last month ordered the closure of all universities, colleges, schools, and coaching centres in the Union Territory till May 15 though teaching and non-teaching staff being asked to attend schools and colleges. But, the J&K administration later allowed teaching and non-teaching staff to stay home in view of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. The closure of the educational institutes was extended till May 30 which has again been extended till June 15.

Teachers, however, are conducting online classes from home in the valley though many students alleged that they were unable to attend these classes due to the non-availability of smartphones. The decision to allow teachers to take online classes from their respective homes was taken after many teaching and non-teaching staff members of government schools tested positive for the virus in the Union Territory.
