PM interacts with Indian Olympic contingent

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met the Indian athletes who competed in the recently-concluded Tokyo Olympic at his residence over breakfast here on Monday.

India recorded its best-ever medal tally in Tokyo, winning a total of seven medals — one gold, two silver, and four bronze.

After India’s historic performance in Tokyo, Prime Minister Modi had invited the Indian contingent for the Independence Day function at Red Fort on Sunday.

Modi and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra shared some lighter moments over breakfast. The Prime Minister also shared ice-cream with Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist shuttler P.V. Sindhu, as promised before the Olympics.

The men’s hockey team, which an Olympic medal after 41 years, presented the Prime Minister with an autographed hockey stick.

On Saturday, President Ram Nath Kovind had hosted a ‘high tea’ for the Indian Olympic contingent at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu was also present on the occasion.

On Sunday, during his Independence Day speech from the rampart of Red Fort, Modi had lauded the performance of the Indian athletes and and said that the country is proud of them for bringing glory to the nation and that their feat has inspired the future generation. (IANS)

LG remembers Vajpayee on his anniversary

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday paid tributes to former Prime Minister (PM) Atal Behari Vajpayee on his death anniversary and said he will always be remembered for the immense contribution towards public life and nation’s development.

Sinha, in a tweet, said, “Humble tributes to Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji on his Punyatithi. A true statesman, and excellent orator, he will always be remembered for the immense contribution towards public life & nation’s development. His thoughts & vision will continue to inspire coming generations”.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vajpayee served three terms as the PM of India. However, first term lasted in just 13 days in 1996. Later, for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004. Vajpayee was one of the co-founders of the BJP.

He breathed his last on August 16, 2018 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

2 JKAS officers posted members of JKSSB

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday posted two JKAS officers as members of the J&K Services Selection Board.

The transfers with immediate effect were ordered In the interest of administration, reads an order.

As per the order, one of the newly appointed members is Neelam Khajuria (JKAS) who was awaiting orders of adjustment in the General Administration Department. The other, Narayan Dutt (JKAS), Project Officer, Wage Employment (ACD), Kathua, has been transferred and posted the Member, J&K Services Selection Board.

J&K reports 77 new Covid-19 cases

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir reported 77 new Coronavirus cases while one person succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, officials said on Monday.

They said 23 of the cases were reported from Jammu Division and 54 from Kashmir Valley, taking the overall case tally to 323499.

Regarding the death, they said, it was reported from Jammu, taking the fatality count to 4398—2158 in Jammu and 2240 in Kashmir.

Providing the district-wise details, they said, Srinagar reported 14 cases, Baramulla 12, Budgam 8, Pulwama 8, Kupwara 2, Anantnag 2, Bandipora 6, Ganderbal 7, Kulgam 0, Shopian 0, Jammu 4, Udhampur 4, Rajouri 8, Doda 6, Kathua 0, Samba 1, Kishtwar 0, Poonch 0, Ramban 0 and Reasi 0.

A number of these cases were confirmed at diagnostic laboratory of CD hospital here.

The CD cases include female (50) from Rathpora, male (40) from Tral Pul, male (22) from Sempora Kulgam, female (36) from Hawal, male (60) from Hassanabad, male (14) from Eidgah, male (62) from Budgam, female (21) from Noorpora, female (34) from Tral, male (55) from Zewan, male (33) from Mahrajbazar, male (72) and two females (67, 35) from Lal Bazar.

Moreover, the officials said that 135 more COVID-19 patients have recovered—48 from Jammu Division and 87 from the valley. So far, 317872 people have recovered, leaving active cases at 1229—455 in Jammu and 774 in Kashmir.

There was no fresh confirmed case of mucormycosis (black fungus) reported today. Thus far 42 black fungus cases have been confirmed in J&K, the officials added. (GNS)

COVID-19 decline: Active cases reduce to 1229 in J&K

Srinagar: The active cases in Jammu and Kashmir which were over 50,000 in peak second wave of Covid-19 have now reduced to 1229 cases with four districts now having just 27 active cases.

As per the data, of 20 districts in J&K, only two districts Srinagar and Jammu have active cases over 100.

Shopian in Kashmir division and Kathua, Samba and Ramban districts in Jammu division have just 27 active cases.

Ramban, with five cases, has the lowest active cases in J&K followed by Shopian with six, Kathua seven and Samba nine.

In Jammu division, Jammu has highest active cases with 121, Reasi 94, Doda 85, Rajouri 61, Kishtwar 44, Udhampur 42 and Poonch 26.

In Kashmir division, Srinagar with 296 has highest active cases followed by Budgam 83, Baramulla 80, Ganderbal 68, Bandipora 54, Pulwama 39, Kulgam 37 and Kupwara and Anantnag 36 each.

Pertinently, 1229 cases are active in J&K that includes 735 from Kashmir division and 494 from Jammu division.

So far Jammu and Kashmir has reported 3,23,499 positive cases, among them 3,17,872 have recovered 4398 have died while 1229 are active. (KNO)

9 injured in Ganderbal accident

Srinagar: At least nine persons were injured, two of them critically, when a vehicle in which they were travelling met with a road accident in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal on Monday, official sources said.

A load carrier on way to Kangan from Manigam skidded off the road at Wusan resulting in injuries to nine persons.

A rescue operation was immediately launched and the injured were shifted to local hospital at Kangan from where two of them were referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for specialized treatment.

Police have registered a case and initiated proceedings, they said. (UNI)

Tourist footfall increases at Srinagar Int’l Airport

Srinagar: After decline in the Covid-19 positive cases, the daily footfall at the Srinagar International Airport has shown a significant improvement of late, as daily arrivals including tourists have reached 8000 a day.

Director Srinagar International Airport, Kuldeep Singh said that with the decline in Covid-19 positive cases in the valley along with the other parts of India , the airport witnessed an average of 7923 passengers daily on 33 arrivals and departures in July last month.

According to the official figures, the last two months recorded a footfall of around 4, 10,756 passengers, while the month of June recorded a footfall around 1, 65,126, and the month of July recorded around 2, 45,630 passengers.

The increase in the footfall is seen after the tourism department immunized the stakeholders holders associated with the tourism industry and with its revival program in the valley after announcing the opening of unexplored tourist destinations and adventure trekking routes.

“Frequent announcements on the public address system are made urging the passengers to maintain social distance and to follow all the Covid sops and guidelines. Further we are also ensuring that no visitors or passengers enter the terminal building without a face mask,” Singh said.

Singh said that there are around 33 flight movements on daily basis these days which also includes the night flight operations at Srinagar International Airport. (KNO)

Adhere to Covid SOPs to tackle 3rd wave: DC Sgr to people

Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad urged the general public of Srinagar district to ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 SOPs and other related guidelines laid down by the Government to contain infection of Covid-19 and to tackle any 3rd wave as predicted by Health Experts.

The DC said though the situation with regard to Covid-19 is so far improving day by day, but wearing Masks, maintaining Physical/ Social distancing, hand hygiene and avoiding mass gatherings are imperative to protect/safeguard our family and fellow citizens from any infection or possible 3rd wave of deadly pandemic.

The DC said this while briefing the Media about the present situation of the Covid-19 in Srinagar district here on Monday.

He said that the pace of ongoing Vaccination drive has been intensified and till date above 6 lakh vaccine doses have been administered to people in Srinagar.

He also added that presently we have about 326 active positive cases in the district  which is highest number in J&K, so we have to strictly adhere to Covid safety precautions to tackle the emergence of 3rd wave of Covid-19 as predicted by Health Experts. He further informed that Srinagar district has touched recovery rate of 98.4 percent and positivity rate has come down to 0.45 percent.

The DC appealed to the people of Srinagar to adhere to all guidelines and follow Covid-19 Appropriate Behavior to ensure safety of themselves, family and fellow citizens. He also urged the left out population to inoculate anti Covid-19 vaccine at the earliest to get protected against infection of Covid-19.

The DC said doing away with the Covid guidelines will prove harmful, adding that as experts are predicting a third Covid wave, the SOPs have to be followed in spirit and we need to be more cautious.

He said self-enforcement is the biggest thing for protection of one and all.

20 days on, no trace of missing persons in Kishtwar

Jammu: There was still no trace of 19 persons who went missing following a cloudburst at Honzar Dachan in Kishtwar district twenty days ago. Eight women among 19 persons went missing following the cloudburst and subsequent flash floods in the remote village on intervening night of July 27 and 28.

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh earlier this month had an aerial survey of the village. He also chaired a high-level meeting during which, among others, he stressed the need for intensifying the rescue operation to trace the missing persons.

Authorities had pressed several teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with “sophisticated equipment” along with other rescuers from police, Army and local volunteers, the officials said. However, officials said that NDRF teams have withdrawn.

Success has been eluding the search teams after seven bodies were recovered and seventeen persons rescued in injured condition after the calamity on Wednesday last.

The missing persons include Saja Begum (60) wife of Ghulam Mohidin, Khursheed Ahmed (31) son of Mohammad Iqbal, Fida Hussain (26) son of Mohammad Ramzan, Mohammad Sharif  (40) son of Ghulam Rasool, Almina Tasbassum (22) daughter of Mohammad Iqbal, Mata Begum (45) wife of Lala Tantry, Ghulam Mohammad (70) son of Ghulam Rasool, Fazal Hussain (18) son of Rustom Ali Chopan, Tariq Hussain (50) son of Nazir Ahmed, Zarina Begum (40) wife of Tariq Hussain, Mata Begum (45) wife of Ghulam Rasool, Fatima Begum (56) wife of Ghulam Ahmed, Bashir Ahmed (45) son of Rustum Ali, Begum (45) wife of Abdul Rehman, Sharifa Begum (38) wife of Ghulam Mohammad, Shakir Hussain (22) son of Ghulam Ahmed, Ghulam Ahmed (65) son of Abdul Aziz, Zubaida Banoo (25) daughter of Ghulam Ahmed and Khalid son of Haji Gami.

Sources said that rescue operation was closed this evening and would be resumed tomorrow. (GNS)

Breach in Jehlum embankment in Shadipora triggers protest

Bandipora: A breach in river Jhelum embankment in North Kashmir’s Shadipora area of Bandipora district triggered protest on Monday.

People hit to roads and blocked the traffic demanding action against the officials of Irrigation and Flood Control Department Sumbal.

The breach according to protesters brought back the haunting memories of 2014 devastating floods.

The protesters said that the breach at the same spot in 2014 had left the entire Shadipora area submerged for weeks together. They slammed the government for “failing” to repair the river bunds.

The commuters faced a lot of inconvenience due to protest and closure of the road.

“It is really shameful that I&FC Department didn’t repair crucial embankments of river Jhelum and results are in front of us today,” the protesters said.

Officials from I&FC Department along with police rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters with the assurance and embankment will be repaired without any delay. (KNT)
