Several Langate villages san basic amenities, locals aghast

By: Murtaza Mushtaq

Handwara: The residents of Qaziabad, Pohru-chakla and Mawer villages in Langate Handwara Thursday staged a protest over the non-availability of basic amenities to the inhabitants.

The protest led by Chairman Langate Constituency Development Initiative (LCDI) Munawar Khawaja along with local political workers castigated Jal Shakti Department, R&B and PDD departments over shortage of water supply, shabby road conditions and frequent power outages.

The protestors alleged that despite time to time appraisals, the authorities concerned are yet to budge, putting the local populace into huge inconvenience.

Munawar Khawaja showed his resentment and anguish against authorities over deteriorating condition of health infrastructure in SDH Kralgund, NTPHC Qalamabad and Ashpora health centre.

Khawaja urged Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, CMO Kupwara and Director Health Services Kashmir to look into this issue of great public importance.

He also demanded early completion of Safalpora receiving station besides upgradation of Ganapora receiving station and at the same time asked for creation of news receiving stations at Walrama and Palpora to redress the power woes of the local inhabitants.

Khawaja also decried the shabby road conditions in the villages, saying the R&B department has been taking them on a ride despite they bringing the issue to the notice of officials concerned on various occasions.

The protest starting from main market Kralgund concluded at tehsil office Kralgund even as a memorandum was also submitted to Tehsildar Qaziabad.

Khawaja said that if the matters are not resolved within time, the general public will be forced to come on streets against the authorities. (GNS)

No road connectivity in Gbl village irks villagers

By: Raja Syed Rather

Ganderbal: The government claims about the development has fallen flat as the people in a far-off village of Ganderbal district in Central Kashmir have been deprived of the basic facility, road connectivity, thus have been left to lurch.

Inhabitants of Kachpathri, a village in the district, situated on the upper reaches of Kangan in absence of the road connectivity are being forced to walk 10 kms by foot to reach the national highway.

The long pending demand of approach road under the PMGSY scheme was approved in the year 2007 which brought cheers to the inhabitants but it remained a distant dream as the road has not been completed even after the passage of 14 years now.

Although the construction on the 10 km stretch road was executed in 2007 by the Rural Development Department, it was abandoned midway due to unknown reasons.

The people living in the village are living miserable life as according to them almost 20 people with medical emergencies have died so far, most of them pregnant women, who couldn’t reach the hospital on time.

The absence of an approach road has also affected other developmental works besides the educational institutions in the village.

The population suffers worst during winter as it is difficult to move on snowbound hills to get essential commodities from the market 10 kms down.

People said that, after repeated requests, the higher authorities including Deputy Commissioner (DC) visited the place and urged the concerned department to complete the road without any delay but no heed was paid by the department.

Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PMGSY said that there were certain issues, which hampered the construction work. The issues stand now resolved and the road will be completed soon subjected to fair weather, he said. (KNO)

Life sentence slapped on two convicts in Chinnaswamy stadium blast case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka sessions court on Thursday increased the quantum of sentence of two convicted terrorists in the Chinnaswamy stadium blast case from seven years to rigorous life imprisonment.

Two blasts occured at the stadium in Bengaluru just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on April 17, 2010, leaving 15 people injured. A third bomb was disposed outside the stadium. The match had begun one hour late on the same day.

The two accused in the case — Ahmed Jamali and Aftab Alam — had earlier pleaded guilty in the sessions court. The court had sent them to jail for seven years in June 2020.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sandeep Patil, said, “We had appealed against the decision in the high court. Allowing our appeal, the high court had remitted the matter back to the session court for fresh consideration. The sessions court has now increased the quantum of punishment to rigorous imprisonment for life.”

The police at the time had said that the blasts were caused by low-intensity crude bombs triggered by timers.

IND v NZ 1st Test: Iyer, Jadeja, and Gill fifties help India take opening day honours

Kanpur: Fighting half-centuries by Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shubman Gill helped India take the honours on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand at the Green Park Stadium here on Thursday.

At stumps, called early due to bad light, India are 258/4 in 84 overs with Iyer (75 not out off 136 balls) and Jadeja (50 not out off 100 balls) building an unbeaten 113-run stand after Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee reduced India to 145/4 in 49.2 overs. the visitors had clawed back their way in the second session after Gill had helped India take honours in the first session by scoring his third Test half-century (52 off 93 balls).

After winning the toss and electing to bat first on a pitch that had some cracks and variable bounce, India had done all things right in the morning, propped up by a 61-run partnership between Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara (26). Gill, after surviving lbw calls early on, was at ease against Ajaz Patel, taking him for four fours and oozed confidence in smashing the left-arm spinner for a straight six while marching towards his fourth half-century in the format.

Everything was going serene for India till New Zealand fought back in the second session, taking three wickets for 72 runs in 27 overs, with Jamieson being the chief destroyer on a day in which spinners went wicketless and bled runs in 52 overs. Jamieson, who constantly probed the off-stump channel and had Mayank Agarwal (13) nicking behind to keeper Tom Blundell in the eighth over, struck in the sixth ball post-lunch. Gill, trying to defend forward, inside-edged a full nip-backer to his stumps.

Jamieson then caused trouble for Pujara and Rahane, even hitting the India vice-captain on the glove. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson replaced Jamieson with Southee, a decision that went well as Pujara pressed forward to defend outside the off-stump, only for the ball to take an outer edge to Blundell for a clean low catch.

P’st Pujara’s dismissal, Rahane hit some crisp boundaries through the off-side, with the one-through cover off Jamieson being the standout. But in the 50th over, the tall pacer had the last laugh as Rahane chopped on to his stumps, undone by low bounce, leaving India in trouble.

Iyer, who was almost caught out while going for a big shot early in the innings off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, got two boundaries and survived a close lbw shout off off-spinner William Somerville as well, going into 17 off 31 balls at tea. The 26-year-old began the final session by driving an overpitched Rachin Ravindra delivery through the cover. He would go on to take three boundaries ‘ff Ravindra’s left-arm spin, including back-to-back ones in the 64th over. Iyer then slowed down and dealt in singles, one of which led to reaching his maiden half-century in 94 balls, becoming the 63rd Indian batter to reach the landmark on de’ut.

Patel’s re-int’oduction didn’t change things as Iyer cut him late through backward point.

On the other hand, Jadeja smashed the odd boundary while rotating the strike. The duo were largely untroubled through an odd ball from Somerville did trouble the latter. While Jadeja got a thick outer edge from Southee for a boundary, Iyer continued to cut Patel twice through off-side followed by lofting sweetly over long-on.

Taking the second new ball didn’t change the situation for New Zealand as Jadeja hit successive boundaries off Jamieson, bringing a century of the fifth-wicket partnership with Iyer. In the next over, Jadeja brought up his 17th Test half-century with a quick single to mid-off. The last scoring shot of the day was Iyer smashing Somerville for a six over deep mid-wicket, ending making 58 runs off 72 balls in the final session.

Overall, India will be the happier side as the Iyer-Jadeja partnership blossomed. They will be looking to continue their ascendancy on the second day, with some batting firepower still there.

Traffic snarls in Srinagar leave commuters in lurch

Srinagar: Commuters are facing tough time due to them getting stuck in traffic jams in Srinagar.

Traffic jams during peak hours on vital routes, including Lal Chowk-Jehangir chowk, junctions towards Natipora, Qamarwari and Sonwar route have become a norm. The problem is further compounded by closing down some of the important crossings and commuters are forced to take alternative roads.

At busy Dalgate route, the commuters urged authorities to take necessary measures to avoid traffic jams.
