Sgr-Ladakh highway reopens for traffic

Srinagar: Srinagar-Ladakh national highway was thrown open for vehicular traffic after snow clearance while Mughal road connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri in Jammu division remained closed, a traffic police official said.

Meanwhile, Srinagar-Jammu national highway was also through for vehicular traffic for both sides, the traffic official said. However, heavy motor vehicles would travel from Srinagar to Jammu only.

He said, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the road pressed into service the men and machinery cleared the accumulated snow on Ladakh highway at Zojila pass, Gumri, Captain More and Kargil made it traffic worthy. More than a foot of snow was accumulated on the highway on Sunday.

Trucks loaded with essential commodities besides other vehicles were allowed to cross the Zojila pass, the sources said.

The traditional Mughal road connecting Shopian district in south Kashmir with Rajouri in Jammu division remained closed for the third consecutive day on Tuesday due to snow accumulation caused on Sunday. The snow clearance operation which was taken up yesterday could not continue due to the slippery road conditions. He said the men and machinery are on the job to make the road traffic worthy, the traffic official added.

Meanwhile, snow clearance operation is also going on at Razdan top and Gurez roads in Bandipora district of north Kashmir which were also closed as a precautionary measure following a fresh snowfall Sunday. Besides Keran and Karnah roads in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara are also being cleared of snow to put through for vehicular traffic. The snow clearance operation is going on to put these roads through for vehicular traffic, the traffic official added. (UNI)

Retired SI, his brother killed in Rajouri accident

Rajouri: A retired police officer and his younger brother were killed while three of their family members received serious injuries in a road accident that took place on the main highway near Nowshera town.

The accident took place after a car collided head-on with an Army truck coming from the opposite side.

In this accident that took place on Jammu-Poonch highway at Daliyan village near Nowshera, a retired police Sub-Inspector identified as Mushtaq Khan, son of Mohammad Fazal Khan of Salwah Mendhar were killed on the spot while his younger brother Atta Ullah Khan succumbed to injuries at the hospital during treatment.

Other three members of their family, who were injured in the accident are undergoing treatment and are reportedly having multiple serious injuries, officials said, adding that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law in local police station while investigation and legal formalities are going on. Pedestrian crushed to death in Anantnag

Anantnag: A 65-year-old man was killed after he was hit by a motorcycle in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday evening, officials said.

Officials said that a two-wheeler bearing registration number JKO3H-2045 hit a pedestrian at Lazibal KP road Anantnag, leaving him severely wounded.

He was immediately taken to GMC Anantnag for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries, they said and identified the deceased as Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, son of Gul Mohammad Khan of Lazibal KP road.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered in this regard. (KNO)

CBK arrests accused evading arrest in fake certificate case for 3 years

Srinagar: The Crime Branch Kashmir on Tuesday arrested an accused who was evading arrest for three years in connection with a case involving preparation of fake marks certificates in order to get admission in different colleges of Valley, officials said.

The Crime B ranch said that the accused Aejaz Ahmad Malik son of Abdul Gani Malik of Vilgam Handwara in Kupwara Kupwara was arrested for being involved in case (FIR No: 34/2007) under section 420,468,471,120-B RPC for preparing fake marks certificates of higher secondary part 2nd in order to get admission in different colleges of Valley.

“The investigation of case was closed as proved against Aejaz and 5 others accused persons and the charge-Sheet in the instant case was filed before the Court of Law on December 28, 2010,” it said in a statement.

However, it said, the accused Aejaz Ahmad Malik was absconding and evading arrest since 2018. “The Warrant U/S 512 was issued by Court of City judge Srinagar, and accordingly the warrant was executed by Crime Branch Kashmir and the accused stands arrested in the instant case.”

Armed Forces Flag Day observed at Raj Bhavan

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday paid tributes to the valiant personnel of Armed Forces and saluted the bravery and selfless service of the Defence Forces and their families on the occasion of Armed Forces Flag Day, here at Raj Bhawan.

“Our Armed Forces Personnel continue to set the highest standards of valour. Their indomitable spirit inspires the whole nation to continue steadfastly towards achieving greatness, every single day,” the Lt Governor said.

To commemorate the day, Director Sainik Welfare Department, Brig (Retd) Gurmeet Singh Shan pinned the Armed Forces Flag on the jacket of the Lt Governor.

On the occasion, the Lt Governor made contribution towards the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund and conveyed his best wishes to all serving and retired Defence personnel and their families.

He also appealed to the people of J&K to contribute generously to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund for the welfare of Veterans and the families of those who lost their lives defending the nation. “This will be a befitting tribute to acknowledge their sacrifices,” he added.

Later, the Director of Sainik Welfare Department briefed the Lt Governor about various initiatives launched by the Department for the welfare of Veterans, Veer Naris, their dependents and serving Armed Forces personnel.

The Lt Governor urged the Sainik Welfare Department to continue its sustained efforts towards the welfare of ex-Servicemen and their family members.

Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta and Home Secretary Shaleen Kabra were present on the occasion.

‘All primary schools to have Kindergartens by March 31’

Jammu, Dec 07: Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta Tuesday chaired a meeting to review the functioning of the School Education Department and progress achieved under various schemes during the ongoing financial year.

Administrative Secretaries of the departments of Finance, School Education, besides Directors School Education, Jammu/Kashmir, and Director, Samagra Shiksha participated in the meeting.

It was informed that during this academic year, the Government and Private schools in the Union territory registered a cumulative enrollment of 22,07,296 students with 80% of schools functioning in the Government sector. As per the educational indicators on the revised population on the pattern of the UIDAI, the gross enrollment ratio in respect of Jammu and Kashmir at primary level, upper primary level, high school, and higher secondary level is 111.65%, 80.53%, 72.52%, and 60.53%, respectively.

It was further informed that the Department has implemented several key reforms in the school education sector including the rollout of transparent and simplified transfer policy; implementation of KGBV guidelines; maintaining an affiliation and recognition portal; framing rules for fee fixation committee, and ensuring PFMS based cashless transactions.

To boost gender parity in educational avenues, the Department has laid special focus on tribal and backward areas and has constructed 15 girls hostels in identified areas, whereas, 25 similar facilities will be completed by the end of the current financial year.

Under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the Department is ensuring distribution of dry ration and disbursement of the cash equivalent of cooking cost to all beneficiaries till the schools resume offline learning. The Chief Secretary directed the Department to verify the distribution of benefits under the scheme through respective Panchayats and ensure zero pilferage on this account.

The Chief Secretary emphasized the early implementation of the National Education Policy in Jammu and Kashmir and directed the Department to expeditiously open kindergartens across all 8,000 Government schools in a staggered manner with due convergence with sources under CAPEX and MGNREGA. The Department was asked to ensure the operationalization of kindergartens in schools of the winter zone within two months and the summer zone by 31st March 2022.

Under the scheme Talash, the Chief Secretary asked the School Education Department to rope in Panchayats and enroll all out-of-school children and ensure universal enrolment of students in Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking a serious note of the dropout rates in Government schools, the Chief Secretary directed the School Education Department to fix its responsibility on the teachers failing to provide avenues of quality education to these young minds.  The Department was asked to reduce the dropout rates in higher classes to half of the existing figures.

Moreover, the Department was asked to roll out the mentor-teacher initiative by the end of this month, where one teacher will be entrusted with the learning responsibility of 10 pupils. Accordingly, the School Education Department will evolve an online portal to capture the performance of all teachers and generate their monthly performance reports based on the learning outcomes of their students.

Dr. Mehta further asked the Department to immediately install bio-metric attendance devices in all Government schools to keep a check on the attendance of teachers especially in far-flung areas and take disciplinary action against habitual absentees.

Observing that the NEP provides for in-built vocational training in the school curriculum, Dr. Mehta directed the establishment of digital laboratories in all schools to promote vocational training among students of class VI and beyond, before 31st March 202.

The Chief Secretary also directed the Department to fully utilize the resources provided under the School Development Fund and ensure the functioning of the basic facilities of drinking water, electricity supply, and sanitation in all schools.

The Department was further asked to provide adequate avenues for extra-curricular engagements to the students by proactively organizing events through eco-clubs, and various sporting events in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services and Sports.

Make optimum use of technology for security: DGP to officers

‘235 CCTV Cameras Installed At 12 Railway Stations’

Jammu: To review the security of railways in Jammu and Kashmir a meeting of the State Level Security committee was held today under the chairmanship of Director General of Police J&K Dilbag Singh at the conference hall at Police Headquarters here.

The meeting was attended via video conferencing by Spl DG CID J&K R. R. Swain and Principal Chief Security Commissioner/IGP RPF Hqrs S. N. Pandey while ADGP Railways J&K Sunil Kumar who also conducted the proceedings of the meeting and Commandant RPF Ferozepur division Rajnish attended the meeting at Conference Hall.

The meeting started with the threadbare discussion on the action taken report on the agenda points of the last meeting which included joint security audit of vital installation, experimental running of glass top rail bogies, availability of X-ray baggage scanners for their optimum utilization.

“During the meeting action taken report on the installation of CCTV cameras was also discussed and the committee was informed that 235 CCTV cameras are installed at 12 Railway stations besides there is need for more at some stations.”

Strengthening of manpower, deployment of dog squads and improving infrastructure for the officers and jawans of RPF and GRP was also discussed, a police spokesperson said in a statement issued here.

Speaking on the occasion the DGP expressed his satisfaction over the coordination between GRP, RPF & other departments and impressed upon the officers that best of partnership and performance by the agencies guarding the railways should be ensured on ground for the safety and security of the people.

He said that in future security issues pertaining to the safety of railways will be more important as more and more stations will get connected and more and more people will use the services for travel & freight. He said there have been some elements in the past that were involved in damaging the property of railways. However, he stated that such incidents have gone down considerably.

The DGP impressed upon the officers to make optimum use of the technology for security of the users, officials of the Railways and also for the hassle free services to passengers.

At the outset of the meeting ADGP Railways while welcoming all the committee members said that due to the pandemic COVID-19 this meeting is being held after a long time as the first meeting was held in February 2020.

Smart phones worth lakhs traced, recovered: Cyber Police Kashmir

Srinagar: Cyber Police Kashmir Zone, Srinagar on Tuesday claimed to have recovered missing mobile phones worth lakhs of rupees and handed over to the rightful owners.

In order to extend the services to the general public and to redress their grievances, Cyber Police Kashmir as per a statement, is receiving applications/complaints from the general public about missing of their cell phones.

This is apart from various online frauds, scams and other Cyber related crimes which are being reported in Cyber Police Station Kashmir Zone on routine basis.

A constant 24×7 effort is being made by Cyber Police Kashmir through special teams to investigate such crimes besides tracing missing mobile phones by using advanced technological and conventional methods. Cyber Police therefore remains on the forefront in helping the citizens in various technological challenges being faced by the citizens in their day to day life.

Cyber Police Kashmir was successful in its efforts by tracing 53 such missing smart cell phones of various makes and models worth lakhs of rupees and were accordingly handed over to the rightful owners today at Cyber Police Station Headquarters Srinagar.

On the directions of IGP Kashmir Zone, various awareness campaigns and programmes have also been initiated by the Cyber Police Kashmir, wherein general public is made aware about various contemporary online frauds and scams etc.

Meanwhile, people appreciated and applauded the role & efforts of Cyber Police Kashmir in rendering such services to the general public.

Army’s Dagger Division organizes interactive session in Bla

Srinagar: In an initiative by Dagger Division, an interactive session with stakeholders of Baramulla was organised on Tuesday.

The event saw participation by Mohalla Presidents, Maulvis and other important stakeholders of Sheher-e-Khas Old Town Baramulla.

A strength of 55 stakeholders participated in the session and in the fruitful discussion.

The aim of the event was to have an in-depth interaction with all the important stakeholders in the society. Maintenance of hygiene and sanitation, development projects for Old Town, eradication of drug menace amongst the youth, channelising the youth towards education, sports and shaping the nascent minds for better future and peace were the key take away points of the event.

Apart from the same, civil administration representatives  including the Education Department, PHE, Electricity Department, Police, Municipal Council and other welfare organisations had also been invited to give an ear to the hardships faced by the poeple.

Major General Ajay Chandpuria, GOC Dagger Division chaired the Conclave. The event is yet another step by Army to strengthen the People-Army connect.

Muslims perform last rites of Hindu woman in Kulgam

Kulgam: Setting an example of communal harmony and brotherhood, the local Muslims in Begam village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam Tuesday performed the last rites of their 75-year-old Hindu neighbor.

Lajwanti Devi, a resident of Begam village in Kulgam district was a Kashmiri Rajput Hindu and died at the age of 75 today morning after a brief illness. However, her last rites were performed by local Muslims.

The Muslim neighbours joined hands to carry out all the formalities for the deceased woman’s last rites, in line with the cremation practices of Kashmiri Pandits.

“She was one of us. We never thought of her as a Hindu. We arranged everything needed for the cremation,” Abdul Rashid Khanday, a local said. “She has been living here among us for many years,” he said.

Rajinder Singh, her son said Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits are equal and this bonding is eternal. “The brotherhood and communal harmony is everlasting and these gatherings are one such example of it,” he said. (KNO)
