Team India to undergo three-day quarantine before flying to South Africa

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team will undergo a three-day quarantine in Mumbai before flying to Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday by a charter flight.

Members of the South Africa-bound squad have been asked to check into a five-star hotel near the Mumbai International Airport by Sunday evening to fulfil the biosecurity protocols, a Cricbuzz report said.

Before entering the bio-bubble, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul Thakur took part in a mini-camp at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai under India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.

India will play three Tests and three ODIs but at this point, only the members of the Test squad will fly to the Rainbow Nation.

Meanwhile, a few members of the India A squad — Navdeep Saini, Saurabh Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Arzan Nagwaswallam, Hanuma Vihari, and Vivek Ramakrishna (trainer), who were involved in a three-game series against South Africa A, have stayed back and will join the senior side after they reach there.

The rest of the India A squad avoided landing in Mumbai and flew directly to Ahmedabad from Bloemfontein to avoid strict quarantine protocols in Maharashtra.

Notably, there were concerns around senior teams’ travel to South Africa, which is reeling under Omicron, a new and deadlier variant of COVID-19. However, the incident-free A tour has emboldened the BCCI and the members for travelling to the country. The CSA has also promised to leave nothing to chance on the implementation of BSE protocols during the tour.

The first of the three Tests starts in Centurion on December 26. Wanderers in Johannesburg and Newlands in Cape Town will host the other two Tests.

Response swift but omicron still threat

So far response by the government as far as measures against omicron variant of covid-19 are far swifter compared to earlier this year when the Delta variant began to make its presence felt.

Not only J&K, there are indications that all governments across the country have learnt valuable lessons in preparedness from the nearly two-year-long confrontation with the pathogen.

Despite measures the variant has dispersed to some states or UTs. Some of the alarm is understandable. But given the data about the variant doesn’t yet convey the magnitude of the threat it poses, the best recourse would be to remain unflinching about Covid protocols while the scientists and medical experts do their job.

Health officials have confirmed a number of infections from the Omicron variant in India, around fortnight after the World Health Organization designated it as a variant of concern (VOC). The extent of the transmission is still evolving. So far no case has been confirmed in J&K or Ladakh. There is no room for complexity either, considering what has been seen in South Africa, where the variant seems to be spreading rapidly.

It is also true that there is little known about how significant a threat Omicron poses besides being readily transmissible. It is not known if this variant leads to more severe, or milder, illness and it will take weeks before one of the most crucial questions is answered: How does it affect people who have had a past infection, vaccine shots, or both?

United States health officials said that while the omicron variant is rapidly spreading, early indications suggest it may be less dangerous than delta, which continues to drive a surge of hospitalizations globally.

President Joe Biden’s chief medial adviser, Dr Anthony Fauci has said that scientists need more information before drawing conclusion’s about omicron’s severity.

It is also true that undue alarm will only serve to create a distraction at a time when the focus needs to be on scientific evidence but there is need for covid-19 appropriate behavior as been rightly asked to be adhered to by the officials given the fact that WHO has said that measures that work again delta variant work against omicron also.

So, while authorities have done well to bolster surveillance at airports, they must also make sure that there is no let-up in the general levels of testing and contact tracing besides compliance to CAB.

Srinagar: The work on 3.5-kilometre long emergency landing strip in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district is in full swing and land is being acquired for setting up an air traffic control building.

Official documents in possession of The Precious Kashmir reveal that 93 percent work on the facility has been completed till date. “It was apprised that construction of emergency landing facility from kilometer 246.200 to kilometer 249.700 (design length 3.5 kilometer) on Srinagar- Banihal section of NH1A (New-NH44) is in full swing and 93.8 % progress has been achieved on it,” reads record note of a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, P.K. Pole on November 27 to review progress of the major projects being executed by central agencies in Kashmir.

According to the report, the majority of works have been completed and land acquisition is under process for the Air Traffic Control (ATC) building and service road.

It further reveals that a draft 3D notification has been issued by the competent authority for land acquisition (CALA) and the same has been sent to the headquarters of the National Highways Authority of India for approval and publication in the official gazette.

It is worthwhile to mention that in 2016, the ministry of road transport and highways announced the formation of an inter-ministerial joint committee with the ministry of defense and the Indian Air Force (IAF) to look into the feasibility of setting up emergency landing strips on highways. IAF and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) were tasked with the site survey and inspection.

The Centre plans to set-up 19 such airstrips on national highways to handle emergency landings of the IAF’s jets and other aircrafts.

The standard design for the emergency landing strips includes parking slots for four aircraft, an air traffic control (ATC) tower and two gates at both ends of the strip.
