LG condemns, says will extend all possible support to slain families

Srinagar: Two policemen were killed after militants attacked a police party at Gulshan Chowk in northern district of Bandipora, police said on Friday.

A police officer said that the incident took place at the busy Gulshan Chowk where militants attacked the escort party of Station House Officer Saddar in which two policemen sustained injuries.

“The injured policemen were shifted to district hospital Bandipora where doctors declared them brought dead,” the officer said and identified the slain as Muhammad Sultan of Baramulla and Fayaz Ahmed of Kupwara district.

The official said that soon after the attack the area was cordoned off and a massive manhunt launched to nab the attackers. Hospital sources said that both the police arrived with multiple bullet injuries and were declared brought dead on arrival.

A police spokesman said that at 5:15 pm, militants fired at a police party at Gulshan Chowk, Bandipora after which senior police officers visited the spot.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that militants fired at the police party of Police Station Bandipora near Gulshan Chowk area of Bandipora in which two police personnel SgCt Muhammad Sultan and Ct Fayaz Ahmad received critical gunshot injuries. Both the injured were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment, however both of them succumbed,” the police spokesman said.

He said that Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to the incident. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted: “No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous militant attack on our brave JK Police jawans SgCT Mohd Sultan & Ct Fayaz Ahmad at Bandipora. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs. We are firmly resolved to avenge this barbaric action by the enemies of peace & determined to completely dismantle the militant ecosystem. J&K administration will extend all possible support to martyrs families.” (KNO)

J&K politicians condemn

 Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Apni Party president Syed Altaf Bukhari and CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami on Friday condemned the militant attack in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Friday in which two policemen were killed.

“I condemn the militant attack on the police in Bandipora area earlier today (Friday) that resulted in the death in the line of duty of J&K police personnel, Muhammad Sultan and Fayaz Ahmad. May Allah grant them Jannat and may their families find strength at this time,” Abdullah said in a tweet.

Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari condemned the militant attack while terming the attack as heart wrenching and barbaric.

“The senseless bloodshed has only destroyed the life of people in Kashmir. Forces inimical to peace will yield nothing through violence except for adding to the miseries of people,” he said.

Bukhari reiterated that the acts of violence in any of its manifestations are detrimental to the interests of any civilized society and people should raise their voice against such inhuman and barbaric forces before it is too late.

CPI (M) leader and former Kulgam legislator, M Y Tarigami also condemned the attack and said that such attacks won’t serve anyone’s cause.
