Arrested DRDO scientist tries to kill self, admitted to AIIMS

New Delhi: The DRDO scientist, who was arrested by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell in connection with the December 9 Rohini Court blast, on Sunday tried to commit suicide, sources said.

According to the sources, arrested scientist, Bharat Bhushan Kataria, tried to consume some poisonous substance while he was in police custody, and has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. “His condition is said to be stable,” sources said.

On December 9, a low-intensity blast ripped off inside courtroom number 102 of Rohini court complex at around 10.30 a.m. injuring one person present within the blast radius.

The police on Saturday said that Kataria, 47, planted the IED at a place where a lawyer was likely to sit inside the courtroom, as he was “highly frustrated due to the protracted legal battles which were causing problems in his career as well as prolonged mental harassment and monetary loss to him and his family”.

The probe revealed that Kataria and Advocate Vashistha were living in the same building till about 3 years ago. They were having a long-standing dispute of over 10 years and had filed over a dozen civil and criminal cases against each other.

The Rohini Court has been in limelight for the past two months after two back-to-back attacks that have raised several questions on the security arrangements at the court premises.

Even local courts have several times come down heavily on the security scenario at the Court.

Earlier on September 24, in an incident that seemed ripped from a Bollywood potboiler, top Delhi gangster Jitender Singh Mann, alias Gogi, was shot dead in Rohini Court by two assailants dressed in lawyers’ garb. In the retaliatory fire, the assailants were also shot dead.

Keep Check On Food Prices

The prices of vegetables and fruits continue to be higher in Jammu and Kashmir. Among reasons non-regulation of the prices by the Department of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCSCA) is blamed.

The pandemic hit-economy has made the contemporary prices harder for the common man. Inflation has been rising steadily but vegetable prices were all but manageable until recently. A closer look at the Consumer Price Index of June would show that while prices in the food and beverages group rose, vegetables posted a marginal gain. The rise in prices is primarily attributed to the demand and supply principle.  However, it is not the only factor that decides the prices in contemporary markets across the globe. There are other variables that impact the prices and include malpractices which greatly affect the pricing.  Hoarding, artificial dearth, and monopoly can cause prices hike to the disadvantage of the common people. The other contributing agents include cartels. The last person severely affected by these factors is the common consumer. While the concept of liberal trade and free marketing needs encouragement, it never means that the buyers are exploited. Unfortunately, there is an unhindered accumulation of huge capital in the hands of a few manufacturers, pushing a common customer into jeopardy.  The prices are fixed without any regard to the impact it has on the common consumer.

It is here that the government should come forward and streamline the markets especially in controlling factors that are associated with pure malpractices by some unscrupulous people. The administration needs to face local challenges with a lot more authority than it is showing or lacking presently. At all levels, the administration is responsible for safeguarding the interest of common people. There is a full-fledged department, tasked with the duty of managing the prices of essentials. Hovered there are complaints the concerned officials are not taking action against the errant which only encourages the former at the peril of a consumer. The official machinery needs to step up efforts to give relief to the common consumer. The traders and businessmen doing business in a fair manner need to be encouraged but those contributing to inflation by resorting to unfair means should be taken to task.  The concerned department has been saying that there is proper monitoring on the ground but the rates fluctuate every two days which makes it difficult for the department to frame the rate list. There are issues and solutions too. They need to be worked out by the concerned department.

3 months on, EEG, ERCP machines gather dust at GMC Ang

By: Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: The purchase of two sophisticated Electroencephalography (EEG), Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) machines by the authorities of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has failed to serve any purpose as both the machines are gathering rust as the hospitals has neither space for their installation nor trained technicians available to run them.

Three months ago, the GMC authorities’ procured EEG and ERCP machines with the purpose to keep both the important investigations available in the hospital, however, sources said, both the equipments are even awaiting installation.

“Both the machines are packed in the same boxes they were brought in three months ago and are gathering rust. Authorities have bitterly failed to identify the space for installation of these equipments and depute a staff for training to run them,” a source in the GMC said.

Now that the hospital authorities have identified a room where the machines will get installed but sources cited the non-availability of trained technicians as the major reason for them not being put to use.

Though the head of general medicine department, sources said, many a time recommended two persons for three month training who could later assist the doctors to conduct these investigations at the facility but nothing happened later.

“HOD medicine recommended two Para-medics from his department for training at SKIMS or SMHS to run these machines. The recommendations are supposed to be approved by the principal but he is hesitant to grant approval to their deputation for training,” said a source.

ERCP is a procedure to diagnose and treat problems in the liver, gall bladder, bile duct and pancreas while as EEG is a test that detects abnormalities in the brain waves.

Both the investigations are expensive, costing thousands of rupees at private diagnostic centers and hospitals.

The delay caused in making the two equipments functional at the tertiarycare facility is badly telling upon the poor patients visiting the hospital for treatment.

“One wonders as to why the authorities of the medical college spent huge amount on the purchase of machines and are now allowing them to gather rust with the result poor patients continue to suffer,” said another Para-medic posted in the hospital.

Principal GMC, Dr Tariq Qureshi, however, said that delay in putting the machines at use was caused by the dearth of space for their installation.

“Since there was a dearth of space in Endoscopy section for installation of ERCP, we had to identify two rooms for both machines. One more instrument for ERCP was pending which has also been procured now,” Principal said.

HOD medicine, Dr Ghulam Jeelani said that besides the dearth of space, the non-availability of trained technicians was the major reason for the machines not being put to use. “Though I have recommended some persons for training but their names were not approved,” Dr Jeelani said.
