Wildlife Deptt to assess snow leopard population in Kashmir

Survey to be carried out in Gurez, Sonamarg

By: Ibni Maqbool

Srinagar: The department of Wildlife Protection is carrying out an assessment of snow leopard population in their potential landscapes in Kashmir Valley.

Documents in possession of The Precious Kashmir reveal that the Department of Wildlife Protection, is implementing the snow leopard population assessment programme in their potential landscapes of Kashmir in joint collaboration with SKUAST- Kashmir and Nature Conservation Fund (NCF) Mysore.

The assessment would be carried out in Gurez and Sonamarg where snow leopards have been spotted in the recent times.

A study conducted by the Mountain Wildlife Division of SKAUST- Kashmir has confirmed the presence of snow leopards in Gurez and Sonamarg.

To begin with, the department is engaging project associates, who will be stationed at Tulail( Gurez) and Thajwas- Baltal( Sonamarg), for survey and monitoring of snow leopard population in their potential landscapes upto ending March 2022.

The project is being funded under the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) programme, launched by the Government of India in 2019.

It was launched on October 23, 2019, to assess the population of snow leopards in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Usually found in Ladakh, the snow leopard has been listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list. It has also been listed under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.

After reorganization of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh adopted snow leopard as its state animal.

Experts believe that the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh is home to 50 percent of the snow leopard population of India.

Out of 7,500 snow leopards left in the world, 500 are believed to be in India.

Khiram: People suffer in absence of round-the-clock healthcare facility

By: Ahmad Shabir

Anantnag: The most populated and remotely located village in medical block Bijbehara has no round-the-clock hospital, forcing the patients to travel 25 kms to seek treatment at Medical College Anantnag in emergency.

The X-ray plant and Echocardiography machines installed in the hospital years ago continue to gather dust as the hospital has no technician available to operate them.

The Primary Health Center in the village was sanctioned decades ago with the aim to provide healthcare facilities to the village.

Though the residents of village being most populated both at Tehsil and constituency level have been demanding the hospital being made functional round-the-clock but authorities seem to be turning deaf ear to their demand.

A delegation of villagers told Precious Kashmir that in case of medical emergencies during night hours, they have to rush to SDH Bijbehara or GMC Anantnag, more than twenty kms away.

“The village being remotely located and hugely populous should have a round-the-clock hospital but unfortunately, the authorities never bothered to make this decades PHC functional day and night. Most often there are emergency cases during night hours and it takes lot of time to take them to other hospitals which delays their treatment by nearly an hour,” the residents complained.

A resident questioned the wisdom of authorities of not making this hospital functional round-the-clock.

“Khiram is significant from many aspects mainly population. This village decides the fate of candidates in elections for being highly populated. One wonders if this village does deserve a round the clock healthcare facility then which other areas deserves,” a resident, Ajaz Ahmad questioned.

“Population and location is the criteria for round the clock health facilities and Khiram has both,” he said.

Residents rued that the X-ray plant and ECG machines in the hospital continue to remain non-functional since their installation.

The hospital, they said, even does not have a man power to run these machines thus making the patients suffer.

“Though a couple of doctors and some para-medics posted in the hospital put up all their efforts but what can they do when authorities have not deputed trained technicians to run these machines,” the residents complained.

A local resident, Abdul Rashid said that visiting this hospital even during day time serves little purpose as many patients again have to go to other hospitals or private clinics for X ray or ECG advised by the doctors.

“This is irony that two important machines are rusting in the hospital for want of man power,” said the resident.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Anantnag, Dr Mukhtar admitted that the machines in the hospital are not operational but added that he has directed the BMO to make an arrangement of the technician from the block, who can run these machines twice a week.

“We will also send a para-medic from the PHC for short training course and till he completes the training, a technician arranged by the BMO will be deputed to the hospital two days a week for the purpose,” CMO said.

He said that three posts of para-medics fell vacant at the PHC which created shortage of manpower. “Filling these posts is the job of the government,” CMO said.

Adhere to SOPs: KCCI to people

Srinagar: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday said that it is deeply concerned at the spike in Covid Positive cases in Jammu & Kashmir.

In a statement, KCCI spokesman said that an analysis of the spread of 3rd Covid Wave in Jammu and Kashmir can be directly linked to ignoring of prescribed protocols by certain individuals amongst us.

“Now, after the previous lockdown stands squandered away and Kashmir is in a worse situation than ever before,” said the KCCI spokesman.

“The society is now facing the threat of 3rd Covid Wave: The need of the hour for the society is to now collectively and sensibly fight for 3rd Covid Wave. The past few days in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Government has decided to impose complete restriction on non-essential movement during the night to tackle the rise in the positive cases,” he said.

“The fight against 3rd COVID Wave rests now on the shoulders of the civil society and the general public. The civil society including mohalla committees, Masjid/Gurudwara committees and have played a stellar role in supporting, feeding and helping lessen the sufferings of the people,” he added.

“The general public have displayed exemplary patience and cooperation despite heavy odds and deep stress. It has to be borne in mind that the business community is presently undergoing the 12th month of a lockdown which has inflicted heavy damages to the economy,” he further added.

The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry urges the administration to keep the livelihood of the business community in mind before taking any future decision and tackle the situation in consultation with the traders/business community.

Over 90% adults received single dose of Covid vaccine: PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that more than 90 per cent of India’s adult population has received single dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

The Prime Minister was speaking after virtually inaugurating the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata.

He said that today, more than 90 per cent of India’s adult population has received single dose of the vaccine. “Within just five days, more than 1.5 crore children have also been administered the first dose,” he said.

Dedicating the achievement to the entire country and every government, Modi especially thanked the scientists of the country, the vaccine manufacturers and the people in the health sector for this achievement.

“The new campus will go a long way in providing affordable and state-of-the-art care to the people of West Bengal, especially to the poor and middle class families. In the journey of the pledge to make the best medical care available to each and every citizen of the country, we have taken another strong step,” the Prime Minister said.

He mentioned that the country started the year with vaccination for children in the age group of 15 to 18 years. At the same time, India is also achieving the historic milestone of 150 crore – 1.5 billion vaccine doses, in the first week of the first month of the year itself.

“A total of 150 crore doses in less than one year is a significant achievement and symbol of the will power of the country. It denotes the country’s new confidence, Aatmnirbharta and pride, he said. As cases are rising due to the Omicron variant, this shield of 150 vaccine doses becomes all the more important,” Modi said.

So far, he said, about 11 crore doses of Corona vaccine have been provided free of cost to West Bengal by the government. “More than one-and-a-half thousand ventilators, over nine thousand new oxygen cylinders have also been provided to Bengal. A total of 49 PSA new Oxygen plants have also started functioning in the state,” the Prime Minister mentioned.

The Prime Minister said today Ayushman Bharat scheme is becoming a global benchmark in terms of affordable and inclusive healthcare. “Under PM-JAY-Ayushman, more than 2 crore 60 lakh patients have received free treatment in hospitals across the country. Estimates say that in the absence of the scheme, patients would have ended up spending 50 to 60 thousand crore rupees. More than 17 lakh cancer patients also benefited under Ayushman Bharat scheme,” he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Ministers Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Dr Subhas Sarkar, Shantanu Thakur, John Barla and Nisith Pramanik were among those present on the occasion. (IANS)
