EqualHue project offers leg up for aspiring female cricketers

Srinagar: The EqualHue initiative has launched a first-of-its-kind outreach and excellence programme, comprising youth tournaments, financial assistance and technical opportunities, to support girls and women in India who aspire to play cricket.

EqualHue Cricket is a pioneering research-backed and community-led initiative that charts a pathway for girls in cricket.

The EqualHue project, a movement focussing on gender equity in sport, was founded in 2020 by former India cricketer Snehal Pradhan, author Karunya Keshav and the Sports Law and Policy Centre.

EqualHue Cricket, conceived under the EqualHue project, is a collaborative effort involving the #EqualHue team,GoSports Foundation and Meraki Sport & Entertainment.

It is a pioneering initiative aimed at creating pathways for aspiring female cricketers from across the country, enabling them to start, stay in and succeed in the sport, while leaving a tangible impact on our country’s socio-economic fabric.

Speaking on occasion of the launch, Snehal Pradhan, programme director, said, “We at the EqualHueproject want to make a difference on the ground for women’s cricket, but, first we needed to document ground realities, which we did with the Equal Hue report. Now, having identified the areas to focus on, we move into the action phase with Equal Hue Cricket.”

“With an ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup on the horizon, the under-16 age group must be a special focus. And having almost quit cricket before getting a Railways job, I know how important it is to support players financially and expand pathways for progression. We look forward to developing these with the help of GoSports Foundation.”

Managed and marketed by Meraki Sport & Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., Equal Hue Cricket is anchored on the premise of developing women’s cricket from the grassroots to elite development, and will focus on providing girls and women with exposure and opportunities, to play competitive cricket, enhance their skills, and progress to professional opportunities in the sport. The platform aims to actively engage over 30,000 aspiring female cricketers, through multiple touchpoints viz. academies, schools, housing societies, camps with IPL team(s) and beyond.

Modi has altered culture of elections in India: BJP chief Nadda

New Delhi: Addressing the boisterous party worker after landslide victory in four of the five Assembly elections, BJP National President J.P. Nadda on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has altered the culture of elections in India.

“PM Modi has changed the culture of politics. For decades, the politics was dominated by dynasts, by regionalism, sanskritikvaad (cultural dominance) etc., but today, it is the politics of development, of empowerment, empowerment of youth, women and farmers,” Nadda said while addressing the party workers.

Referring to the coalition of parties against the BJP, Nadda said, “I have always maintained that the voter knows how to safeguard his interest even if different leaders or parties join hands. Elections are not mathematics or arithmetic but it is chemistry.”

“And when I say chemistry, we should all remember that the poor people of India, those who have been exploited over the years, our mothers, our sisters, our youth, and our farmers. They all have a bond with Narendra Modi, just as a chemical bond. It is Modi’s chemistry that prompted him to empower the poor masses and benefit the masses with his chemistry of development.”

He went on to list the multiple schemes that the Centre is running for “empowering the common masses” that then have resulted in votes at the time of elections.

IN the women’s singles second round, former world champion Sindhu, who is currently ranked world No 7, started the match on expected lines and dominated early exchanges. However, the Chinese shuttler, ranked 34 in the world, took eight consecutive points after trailing 3-5 and maintained her lead to clinch the first game.

The Indian mounted a comeback and took the next game to bring the contest on level terms. The see-saw battle continued in the deciding game but Sindhu’s younger opponent chipped in regularly with successive points to win the contest.

Saina, who had survived a tough three-game encounter with Clara Azurmendi of Spain in the first round, found Ratchanok too strong in their second-round encounter and lost in straight games. The Thai player was totally in control and won 42 out of the total 67 points played.

Online Frauds And Alertness

Even after several steps to spread awareness on cyber crimes and online frauds by the police, people continue to fall prey to the cyber fraudsters.

Online fraud cases are increasing as people use more and more digital transactions. Many cases have surfaced in the Kashmir valley so far this year. Culprits exploit even educated people’s vulnerabilities with sugary offers and entreating calls and dupe them of money. Staying alert, not sharing bank details, avoiding friend requests etc are the key for staying safe.

Time and again, police issues caution that these fraudsters use the details and initiate an online transaction and ask for the OTP saying that it is required for completing the process of deferment of EMIs on loan or something else.

Once OTP is provided by a customer, money is siphoned away. The fraudster may also send a malicious link in SMS or email in connection with EMI which, if clicked, may install malware to compromise the mobile or computer, police said.

It should be borne in mind that the One Time Password (OTP), or PIN related to one’s bank account should never be shared with anyone as no bank asks for the same over phone or online.

It would be wise not to click on any links from unknown sources and it is better to ignore any offers online or otherwise. One would be better advised to thoroughly research any organizations or charities purporting to be raising money for the destitute.

Cyber crime is a criminal activity that involves the use of one or more computer and a network. A target could be an individual, an organisation or a government. Financial fraud, invasion of privacy, illegal trade, online stalking, data theft, subversion and espionage are a few examples of cyber crime.

It’s important to make users aware that they should not share sensitive information such as PIN, passwords, card details or log-in details with anyone. More important is to make people aware that the bank or its officials will never ask for such details under any circumstances. Even banks keep on sending messages to customers to be wary of such messages and never share details. As they hide their true identities using technology, nabbing the cyber criminals is difficult. Hence, taking precautions and prevention is the key. In case of any such scam, the people should immediately contact the cyber crime police station and seek their help and guidance.

India needs to fight future wars with indigenous weapons: Army Chief

New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict shows that a conventional war can happen and the country needs to be ready to fight future wars with indigenous weapons.

“Is the war being fought in cyberspace or through air-conditioned chambers?” General Naravane asked. He then replied that this war shows that a “conventional war could happen”.

“The war we are seeing is being fought physically on the ground,” the Army chief told media persons at a function in the national capital on Tuesday.

He also said that the “biggest lesson that we can learn from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is that India needs to be ready to fight future wars with indigenous weapons.”

The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered the 14th day.

On Tuesday, the United National Security Council called for decisive action to end the conflict.

The Security Council held its seventh meeting in two weeks related to the unfolding situation.

“Simply put, millions of lives have been shattered,” Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator said.

Indeed, the reach of humanitarian efforts can only go so far without the committed cooperation of Ukraine and the Russian Federation to ensure civilian protection and the maintenance of safe corridors for people wanting to escape the violence and those delivering critical aid.

Some civilians are unable to escape at a time when 1.7 million have already fled the country since the conflict began on February 24, while those who remain are facing cuts of essential services.

Voicing an extra sense of dread over the impact the conflict will have on the wider world, Griffiths expressed deep worry about the consequences on vulnerable people living half a world away, with food prices spiking and supplies uncertain.

“We have the capacity and the know-how to meet the most urgent needs in Ukraine, if the parties cooperate, but make no mistake, we are unable to meet the needs of civilians today; I hope we will not fail them tomorrow,” he had said, summarising the widespread ongoing humanitarian efforts alongside enormous and growing needs blanketed by spreading violence. (IANS)
