Nobody asked Mrs Gandhi to quit, says Azad after meeting Sonia

New Delhi: The Congress’ ‘G-23′ group, which is seeking a party overhaul, seem to have toned down its demand of leadership change with its senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who met party chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday, saying there is no vacancy right now for the post of President and nobody asked her to quit.

“Nobody said Mrs Gandhi should quit.

“She is Congress President, we are leaders of the party, the feedback which is given to restructure organisation is not meant for public… there is no question on the leadership, when Mrs Gandhi offered (to step back), we all rejected it.

“When the party will go for organisational polls, then there will be deliberations.. at that time it will be decided,” Azad told media persons after the key meeting, which lasted for over an hour.

“There is no vacancy of the Congress President.”

Distancing himself from the views of senior party leader and fellow G-23 leader Kapil Sibal on leadership change, Azad noted that Gandhi’s offer has been rejected by all groups, including the one he belonged to, and “we wanted her to continue”.

His remarks bolster indications that the Congress’ internal battle seems heading towards a truce as Gandhis have been proactively reaching out the dissenters with senior party leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been not having a good equation with former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, met him on Thursday and listened to his grievances. Later, Hooda met the G-23 leaders.

Similarly, the Gandhi family is reaching out each person in the G-23 group, who have been demanding a drastic overhaul of the party’s functioning, either personally of through an emissary.

The ‘G-23’ met on Wednesday and issued a statement calling for the Congress organisation to be revamped and accountability of the people involved in the election process.

“We believe that the only way forward for the Congress is to adopt the model of collective and inclusive leadership and decision making at all levels… in order to oppose the BJP, it is necessary to strengthen the Congress party. We demand that the Congress party initiate a dialogue with like-minded forces to create a platform to pave the way for a credible alternative in 2024,” the statement had said.

CAS denies Russia interim relief against ban, World Cup participation almost over

Lausanne (Switzerland): The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday dismissed the Russian soccer federation’s bid for an urgent interim ruling against the ban to play Poland in a World Cup playoff match on March 24.

The CAS decision means Russia will not be able to play Poland in World Cup qualifying and their hopes to feature at the World Cup in Qatar later this year is almost over. However, it will not be confirmed till CAS makes a final decision.

The ruling follows a similar CAS refusal on Tuesday to freeze UEFA’s ban on participation of Russian national and club teams in European football competitions.

However, in a second blow in just a few days, the FUR failed in its proceedings against FIFA.

Both the decisions ensure Russia would not be allowed to play their qualifier against Poland and effectively end their chance of participating in the World Cup in Qatar later this year, reports dailymail.co.uk

In a statement on Friday, CAS said, “The president of the appeals arbitration division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the request filed by the Football Union of Russia (FUR) to stay, for the duration of the CAS proceedings, the execution of the FIFA Council’s decision to suspend all Russian teams and clubs from participation in its competitions until further notice (the challenged decision).”

“Accordingly, the challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in FIFA competitions. The CAS arbitration proceedings continue. A panel of arbitrators is currently being constituted and the parties are exchanging written submissions. No hearing has been fixed yet,” the statement said.

That ruling means Spartak Moscow, the only Russian side left in the latter stages of the Europa League, were not allowed to play their last-16 match on Thursday and their opponents RB Leipzig received a bye.

CAS may yet rule to overturn FIFA and UEFA’s decisions when it makes its full judgment, which would see Russia reinstated.

J&K budget: Rs 50 cr allotted for retrieval of land from beneficiaries of Roshini Act

By: Ibni Maqbool

Srinagar: In Jammu and Kashmir’s annual budget for 2022-23, the Government of India has allotted Rs 50 crore for retrieval of land transferred to occupants under the repealed Roshini Act-2001.

Documents in possession of The Precious Kashmir lay bare that Rs 50 crore have been kept in the budget for retrieval of land under Roshini Act.

“The budgetary provision has been made to pay back premium to those vested with ownership rights of state land under the law,” an official said.

He said Rs 76 crore were deposited by beneficiaries of the law from 2007 to 2013.

In October 2020, the High Court declared the Roshini Act “illegal, unconstitutional and unsustainable” and held allotments under the Act as void ab initio. The HC also ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into transfer of ownership and sought action against bureaucrats involved in it. It also directed government to make public the names of prominent people allotted land under the law.

Before HC judgment, J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik in November 2018 scrapped the law by invoking legislative powers vested with him during Governor’s Rule.

The government repealed the law, reasoning that it had “failed to realise the desired objectives and there were also reports of misuse of some its provisions”.

The law envisaging the transfer of ownership rights of state land to its occupants was enacted by Farooq Abdullah-led government in 2001.

In 2014, a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) estimated that against the targeted Rs 25,000 crore, only Rs 76 crore had been realised from the transfer of state land to occupants.

The report pointed out irregularities including arbitrary reduction in prices fixed by a committee, and claimed that this was done to benefit politicians and affluent people.
