DPS Srinagar student bags KL – Yes Program scholarship

Srinagar: A student of Delhi Public School, Srinagar has been accepted to the competitive Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. Wasiq Wajahat Malik of Class 10th was chosen as one of 32 students selected from India for merit-based scholarships in the first round of selection to study for one academic year. He will participate in the program and will spend an academic year in United States.

The YES Abroad program is a cultural exchange between the U.S. and countries with significant Muslim populations. YES Abroad participants serve as “Youth Ambassadors” in their host communities, promoting mutual understanding by forming lasting relationships with their host families and friends. At the forefront of citizen diplomacy, participants will develop the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community.

Speaking about the programme, Syed Sumera, Coordinator Int’l Affairs at the school said, “These programmes develop global competencies for students and make them future-ready. At DPS we prepare them to compete globally.”

Congratulating the student, the Principal Shafaq Afshan said, “Our school has a long history of sending students to exchange programs, as we inculcate in our students the necessary skills from an early age. We are delighted that this tradition continues unabated.”

The Chairman, Vijay Dhar too congratulated the student, and said, “The stated and unstated motto of DPS Srinagar is to develop in the valley culture of excellence. NIT Srinagar begins implementation of NEP, 2020

Srinagar: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has started the process of implementing National Education Policy (NEP) 2020) on the campus and for which the High-Power Committee (HPC) has been constituted.

The High Power Committee comprises all Deans, Heads of the Departments. They will study the report and come up with the probable methodology for implementation of NEP2020 in the Institute.

Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.), Rakesh Sehgal highlighted the role and importance of NEP2020. He talked about objectives, and tentative methodology for its implementation and stated that their focus is to make students self-reliant.

“NEP2020 is set to change the face of the education ecosystem in the coming time. We hope to see bright young adults with innovative approaches towards work and life, he said.

Prof. Sehgal said the year 2022 should be celebrated as a ‘year of transformation’ in academics. The HPC will discuss the NEP, 2020 and very soon they will come up with their methodology. We are going to implement NEP2020 in a phased manner,” he said.

Director also chaired the joint meeting of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Academic Audit Committee (AAC), so that they can study the NEP2020 and recommend their suggestions for its immediate implementation in the Institute.

Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Kaiser Bukhari said NEP 2020 is a revolutionary initiative undertaken by the government of India for a complete overhaul in higher education.

He said NEP 2020 is student-oriented and aims at the holistic development of students to create better citizens with high ethical and moral standards apart from subject knowledge.

Prof. Bukhari described the NEP as a tool to transform the country into a ‘knowledge destination’.

CS reviews revival, restoration of architectural and heritage sites in J&K

SRINAGAR: The Executive Committee’s meeting for the revival/restoration/conservation of the architectural heritage of J&K UT was held today in the meeting hall at Civil Secretariat Srinagar under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta.

The meeting was attended by Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary Tourism; Rahul Pandey, Director at Archives, Archeology, and Museums; Chief Town Planner Kashmir and various other officials/officers attended the meeting through VC.

At the outset, Rahul Pandey Director at Archives, Archeology, and Museums briefed the committee about the mandate of the scheme highlighting the objectives of the scheme and the progress made on the scheme so far. He also presented before the committee the DPRs of 35 sites — to be executed in the first leg of the scheme. Out of these 35 sites, 17 are based out of Kashmir Division and 18 sites are from Jammu Division.

A multi-dimensional approach for the revival of these 35 sites has been taken into consideration which involves the inclusion of some additional developmental components: landscaping, approach path, directional & informational boards, public amenities, clean-drinking water facility, facade-lighting, boundary wall, etc. over and above the structural component. The overall and component-wise financial breakup of the DPRs was also presented before the committee.

While reviewing the progress, CS said that the restoration of the heritage and architectural sites of J&K is a priority of the government and coordinated efforts have to be taken up to restore the sites to their original positions. He directed the officers/officials to formulate and finalise short, medium, and long term plans for revival, restoration, preservation, and maintenance of architectural and heritage sites of J&K. He said that the short term plans should be immediately executed which include components like landscape, approach road, lighting, information boards, public amenities and the rest of the things that fall under long term plan will automatically follow.

He said that the heritage sites should be made a happening place for the people in consultation with the stakeholders as per the approved action plan and said that once people will start visiting the places it will create ripple effects. He added that the whole exercise is apparently aimed at preserving religious, heritage, and cultural sites in Jammu and Kashmir to which the multitude pay obeisance and these sites represent the composite culture of J&K.

After a comprehensive presentation and detailed discussion, the Executive Committee has given its approval for the execution of all the 35 projects. The committee has also approved the hiring of heritage consultancy services for efficient and expedited execution of the projects. In the next meeting of the committee, the Department of Archives, Archeology, and Museums in consultation with the respective District Administrations shall take up additional heritage sites. As per the directions of the CS, the attempt is to revive/restore/maintain 150 sites in total comprising 75 Sufi sites and 75 other heritage sites of varied cultural, religious, and historical importance.

In addition to that, a conceptual idea of “Heritage Mapping” was also presented before the committee by Daksh Dev, a Lieutenant Governor’s Sustainable Fellow working with the Department of Culture J&K UT. The idea was aimed towards creating a digital footprint of the heritage sites and linking it with google maps to educate/inform and assist the tourists/travellers visiting J&K UT. Convinced with the idea, the Executive Committee suggested working towards the inclusion of local stakeholders and individuals for benefit of the people of J&K UT. Once, with coordinated efforts, these sites are revived to their original positions the livelihood activities of various stakeholders and locals will increase.

CS reviews implementation of Bharat Net in JK

“Internet connectivity extended to schools, hospitals, CSCs”

Srinagar: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta, today chaired a meeting to review progress on implementation of Bharat Net scheme in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, GM BSNL Srinagar, GM BBM, Srinagar while as Principal Secretary to Lieutenant Governor, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Secretary IT, GM BSNL Jammu, GM BBM Jammu and others participated online.

While chairing the meeting, CS directed the officers to expedite the process for implementation of Bharat Net scheme in the UT so that all the Gram Panchayats are provided broadband connectivity within the shortest possible time frame.

Under the ambitious Bharat Net Programme, Government of India has envisaged to provide broadband connectivity to all gram panchayats throughout the country.

While reviewing implementation of Bharat broadband scheme in rural parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Secretary was informed that Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) Connectivity has been provided to all 427 GPs planned under Phase -I in 13 blocks of JKUT. Besides, 673 GPs have been connected through V sat in remote areas of all the districts under Phase I.

Dr Mehta said that all the 427 panchayats, which have been connected through OFC, can have multiple connections and will extend Internet facility to a school, nearest hospital and a CSC centre (which can work from gram panchayat).

Emphasizing the importance of digital inclusion at the grass roots level, CS impressed upon the concerned to ensure that net enabled gram panchayats function properly so that they could be used as hubs to connect youth clubs, anganwadi centres and other important public sector installations for awareness campaigns on government schemes.

He said that all the gram panchayats should be maintained well in all respects and the VLW should take adequate steps for its proper maintenance. He directed the concerned officers to iron out all the difficulties on this account maintaining that all panchayats should have a power connection. He cautioned the officers of any laxity in proper functioning of gram panchayats.

He asked the concerned to verify the functionality and efficiency of internet facilities already established in 1092 gram panchayats by holding interactions with the officers either through video conferences or google meet on regular basis.

Chief Secretary also directed the concerned to work in close coordination so that phase second of Bharati Broadband Scheme progresses smoothly under which rest of the gram panchayats in JK would be provided internet connectivity.

Secretary IT gave a detailed presentation about the progress on Bharatnet project Phase 1 saying that several initiatives have been taken up to improve the performance of BharatNet project. She informed that satisfactory VCs were arranged in 39 GPs including those connected with V-Sats. She added that physical verification of 267 V-Sat sites has been done to ascertain their working.

She said that initiatives are being taken up to improve the performance of BharatNet project. She informed that as a preparatory measure for smooth implementation of Phase-ll of the project, relevant information has been sought from RDD in advance.

 

Water supply lines to Khuserpora, Bakshi Mohalla, Muqdam Mohalla restored

Bandipora: The district administration Bandipora today said that the supply line feeding Khuserpora was restored by field staff while the Bakshi mohalla and Muqdam mohalla have been partially restored.

On its twitter handle, District Information Center Bandipora in a tweet said that it was reported that the pipeline feeding from 50,000 gallon overhead water tank of Water supply scheme Vijpara had some blockades due to some concrete remains deteriorated from damaged roof dome from inside of overhead water tank.

“It was a tough job to locate the said concrete blocks in the pipeline but the field staff worked hard today to locate them. Presently, all supply lines feeding various areas have been restored. Today the supply line feeding Khuserpora was restored by field staff. The Bakshi mohalla and Muqdam mohalla have been partially restored,” reads further.

It is pertinent to mention here that the blockades are floating in sub distributions which becomes very difficult to restore as the distribution is beneath the macadamized roads.

Moreover, the construction of a new roof dome for water supply scheme Vijpara has been proposed in retrofitting measures under JJM Programme.

 

CEO, SDM Ganderbal meet CPWs

Srinagar: Chief education officer Ganderbal on Friday said that he along with SDM Ganderbal and zonal education officer, Hariganiwan met contingent paid workers (CPWs) who have forcibly locked the schools at various places demanding compensation and jobs in lieu of donated land.

The statement issued by the chief education officer said that during the course of meeting these CPWs were assured that their genuine demands will be fullfiled as per the criteria laid by the government.

The CPWs , statement said, in response showed positive gesture and agreed to the terms and conditions discussed during the meeting.

At least a dozen government schools were locked by the landlord’s in zone Hariganiwan of Ganderbal in last two days. These CPWs , as reported by a section of print media have alleged that the government has neither provided them jobs nor proper compensation as promised to them when they had donated their land for these schools.

 

‘Water supply to Padawbal area managed through water tankers’

Ganderbal: The district administration today said that the area of Padawbal is at the tail end of Chervan area, hence facing shortage of water supply.

In a statement on Twitter, the administration said that the proposal under sector was submitted for L/F additional raw water main and construction of 50,000 gls capacity SSFP was submitted and works stands allotted, however the pipes for RWM could not be available which could have improved the water supply in the area.
Further the land for construction of 0.50 lac gallons capacity RCC SSFP for Cheerwan is allotted to the contractor, but the work could not be taken up for execution due to land issue with PDC.

The matter has been taken up by the PDC and the administration for redressal. Presently water supply is being managed from Cherwan scheme and shortage if any is managed by tankers, further reads the statement.

 

Bandipora admin takes cognizance of school video, forms inquiry committee

Bandipora: The district administration Bandipora today said that it has taken cognizance of the video purportedly showing students of Govt Middle School Branch Bandipora doing manual work  and as such an internal inquiry committee has been constituted to ascertain the actual circumstances of the incident.

However,  as per preliminary findings, the school was conducting the cleanliness of the campus as a part of preparations under “My School My Pride” wherein some students were taking part during games period.

 

Kaloosa-Gurdal road being upgraded, Malanga road to be completed this year: Bandipora admin

Bandipora: The District administration Bandipora today said the Kaloosa to Gurdal road is being upgraded to 5.5 m carriage way and involves acquisition of additional land for development of Roadway, Carriage way and proper geometrics.

In a statement issued on Twitter, the administration said that the road involves shifting both PHE pipeline and POD electric line. Despite many deliberations, the Roadway hasn’t been achieved at many spots owing to denial of surrender of land by landowners.

“PHE Pipeline stands almost shifted barring certain spots for which we are in touch with the Jal Shakti department. Despite all these hindrances the work on the said road is in progress and will be completed this season.

Similarly, the Malangam to Malangam Gujarbasti road has been macadamized about 4km last year and is planning to Macadamize the remaining length this year and the department has initiated the necessary measures in this regard.

 

Beware Orchardists! Fake pesticides seized at Pulwama

PULWAMA: The Enforcement Wing of South Kashmir seized fake pesticides including Phorate, 18 drums (900 Kgs), Paushak 300 litres (Duplicate) and Aluminium Phosphide 3 cases amounting to approximately Rs 7, 00,000 seized from the premises of Shaheen Enterprises Pulwama.

Law Enforcement officer South Kashmir Wing Amarjeet Singh said that there will be zero tolerance against the sale of fake pesticides and nobody will be allowed to play havoc with the agriculture sector besides damaging the farming community through substandard pesticides.

The government has taken different measures to curb the sale of fake pesticides across the province. Welfare of farmers and revival of the agriculture sector were top priorities of the department.
