KU VC stresses research, early detection, accessible cancer care

Srinagar Oct 05: The Department of Bioresources, University of Kashmir (KU), began its Third J&K International Conference on Breast and Allied Cancers at the Main Campus on Monday.

The conference aims to bridge the gap between fundamental cancer research and clinical application by providing a platform for experts and researchers to deliberate on recent advances in precision oncology, cancer genomics, immunotherapy, artificial intelligence in oncology, early detection, biomarkers, drug discovery and personalized cancer care.

The three-day conference is being organised in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Patients Benefit Foundation and is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Ministry of Science & Technology, JKST&IC and J&K Bank.

The event brings together leading oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, molecular biologists, public health experts, data scientists and young researchers to exchange recent scientific findings and promote interdisciplinary collaborations. Delegates are participating both in-person and online.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between basic research and clinical practice in the fight against cancer. She stressed on the need to promote early detection, scientific innovation and accessible cancer care, particularly in the context of breast cancer. “Research must ultimately translate into better prevention, early detection and care for patients,” she said.

Vice-Chancellor, Gautam Buddha University, Prof. Rana Pratap, noted the growing importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative research in addressing complex health challenges. He highlighted the need for stronger linkages among universities, research institutions, clinicians and other stakeholders to accelerate advances in cancer research and treatment.

Senior Consultant and Oncologist, Dr. Sameer Kaul, stressed on the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment in improving cancer outcomes and the need to increase public awareness about breast cancer, encourage regular screening and strengthen the connection between scientific research and clinical practice.

Dean Research KU, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Ganaie, and Prof. Nazir Dar, Department of Biochemistry, KU, also shared their views on the occasion.

An abstract book containing research contributions presented at the conference was also released on the occasion.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Organising Secretary and faculty member, Department of Bioresources KU, said that the event would provide an important platform for scientific exchange, knowledge sharing and collaboration in the field of breast and allied cancers.

Head, Department of Bioresources KU Dr Riaz-ul- Rehman proposed vote of thanks on the occasion.

The three-day conference features a breast cancer screening camp besides paper presentations, panel discussions, oral and poster presentations, and plenary lectures by internationally renowned scientists, clinicians and healthcare leaders. The programme also provides opportunities for young researchers and students to interact with experts and learn about emerging developments in cancer research.

Students from various colleges across the districts are also participating in the conference, along with researchers, faculty members, clinicians and delegates from different institutions.
