Wildlife Week celebrated at CBC Shikargah

Tral, October 5: Wildlife Week 2026 was celebrated at the Conservation Breeding Centre (CBC), Shikargah, Tral, with the Wildlife Division Shopian organising a special awareness programme aimed at promoting wildlife conservation, habitat protection and responsible coexistence between people and wildlife.

The programme was held under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Suneesh Buxy, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K; Sh. Tawheed Deva, IFS, Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir and Conservator of Forests (Wildlife); and Sh. Sohail Ahmad Wagay, ACF, Wildlife Warden, Shopian.

The celebration was organised around the theme “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife”, highlighting the crucial role of interconnected natural habitats in ensuring safe movement of wildlife, availability of food and shelter, genetic exchange and the long-term survival of different species.

As part of the programme, participants took part in wildlife-awareness activities and presented creative posters carrying messages on biodiversity conservation, protection of wildlife habitats and the need for responsible coexistence with wild animals.

The participants were also felicitated with certificates in recognition of their active participation and contribution to the awareness initiative.

Speaking on the occasion, officials emphasised that wildlife conservation is a collective responsibility and requires active participation from local communities, students and the younger generation. They stressed that protecting forests and natural habitats is essential not only for wildlife but also for maintaining healthy ecosystems and securing the region’s environmental future.

The programme also highlighted the ecological importance of wild animals and the need to minimise human pressures on their habitats through greater public awareness and responsible behaviour.

The Wildlife Division Shopian reiterated its commitment to strengthening conservation awareness and community engagement through continued outreach programmes, while encouraging young citizens to become active partners in protecting Jammu and Kashmir’s rich biodiversity and natural heritage.
