A concrete step

The Jammu and Kashmir government’s effort to macadamize and upgrade 118.06 kilometres of roads in the Srinagar district during this financial year deserves kudos.

In a city where connectivity is the lifeline, not just for business, but also for people going about their everyday life, the initiative is bound to have a positive impact.

Potholes and other road problems have long plagued ordinary motorists with daily commute, as well as shops, patients heading to hospitals and schools.

This drive to upgrade more than 118 kilometres of road is a step towards addressing this age-old issue. Upgraded roads not only shorten distance, they ensure that commute is smooth and hassle-free.

Moreover, enhanced connectivity will improve accessibility to every nook and corner of the district, benefitting everyone from the businessman to the tourist. This has the potential to become a huge revenue generator and put the city on the economic map.

It is heartening to see the extent of improvement in the district. The road construction activity spanning across the district is a testimony to the inclusive development model being practised here.

From commercial places, to residential layouts, all are being covered under the development plan. It truly reflects the government’s connect with the city.

Infrastructure development, as we know, is a slow process. But then, slow and steady wins the race. The macadamization drive is therefore a welcome initiative that will immensely contribute to improving the city’s road infrastructure.

In a way, it is also a motivation for people, as it is a reflection of how the government works towards betterment of the city’s infrastructure. And infrastructure, as we all know, is the backbone of any development.

Good roads provide a feeling of security and convenience. They ease transportation of goods, services, people and even information and services, such as online services and emergency medical services.

That people are willing to take out time to comment on this issue is itself a positive sign.

The real test, however, lies in ensuring that the roads constructed are durable and properly maintained.

It is hoped that the authorities concerned do not lose momentum and carry forward the enthusiasm towards all-round development of the city.

It is also important that the quality of work done is of the highest standards and the project completion timeline is adhered to.

In the meanwhile, people of Srinagar can rejoice the fact that their city has entered into an era of good roads, with the promise of development. We congratulate the authorities for taking this initiative and hope to see more such efforts to develop Srinagar as a complete city in the near future.
