Survey map: Centre names 28 Ladakh features

NEW DELHI, Oct 2: The Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh, has formally identified 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh for inclusion under standard place and feature names on the official Survey of India map.

The move is aimed at ensuring their accurate recognition and improving public awareness of the geographical features, according to the government.

The 28 identified features include peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, land areas and other water bodies.

Among the peaks and mountains listed are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Drak Karpo, Jolmori, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.

The list also includes Chapchingal Pass and Shachmirk Pass, besides Parpik and Skamri Glacier, Shkorga Valley and Yangpa River.

Other features identified include Guru Rinpoche lake, Hot Spring water body, Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa.

The government said formally identifying the features on the Survey of India map would facilitate their accurate recognition and create greater awareness among the public.

The updated map of Ladakh with the additional places and features is available through the Survey of India’s official state maps portal.
