The J&K government’s decision to provide free travel to differently-abled persons on all government transports is indeed a step towards building a just and equitable society .
This announcement made during the Budget session this March shows that the government is walking the talk as far as the promises made to the people are concerned.
The free travel scheme covers transport services provided by Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation apart from e-buses being operated by Jammu Smart City Limited and Srinagar Smart City Limited .
For thousands of differently-abled residents of the UT, it is indeed good news as they continue to be sidelined in various ways despite the efforts made so far.
Persons with disabilities have the right to mobility, which is a fundamental right as it opens up a world of opportunity and choice, enabling them to participate fully in society and make a valuable contribution to the economy.
By announcing free travel for the differently-abled persons the UT administration sends out a strong message that no citizen is second class.
It is heartening to note the UT government’s commitment to building a progressive society as reflected in its decision to provide free bus travel to womenfolk.
As the saying goes, a society reaps the political dividends of the good and bad that it does.
The J&K government deserves plaudits for taking this decision which reflects well on the kind of political and social ethos that prevails in the UT.
However, the onus is now on the administration to ensure that all the travelling facilities are provided to the differently-abled persons in a hassle-free manner by briefing officials concerned and creating awareness among people about the new scheme.
The free travel is a good beginning and the government should be commended for taking up this noble initiative.
