WAR ON DRUGS: 2 peddlers held under PIT-NDPS

Srinagar, July 2: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday detained two habitual drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act in Sopore and Anantnag as part of its ongoing crackdown on narcotics under the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan.

In Sopore, police detained Umar Mohammad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a resident of Sheikhpora, Tujjar Sharief, who was repeatedly involved in drug peddling despite facing previous legal action. Based on his criminal history and continued involvement in narcotics trafficking, Sopore Police prepared a detailed dossier, following which the competent authority issued a detention order under the PIT-NDPS Act. He has been lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.

In a separate action in Anantnag, police detained Faizan Misgar, son of Abdul Rashid Misgar, a resident of Mattan Chowk, under the PIT-NDPS Act. Acting on a duly issued detention order and after completing the required legal formalities, police executed the warrant and lodged him in District Jail Bhaderwah. Police said his repeated involvement in drug trafficking, despite earlier legal action, necessitated preventive detention to prevent him from continuing activities detrimental to public safety, particularly among the youth.

Police said the detentions are part of its sustained strategy to dismantle the narcotics ecosystem by taking stringent preventive action against habitual drug peddlers and preventing them from continuing their illegal activities.

Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and substance abuse, J&K Police said it remains committed to taking strict legal and preventive action against those involved in the narcotics trade and urged the public to share credible information on drug-related activities to help build a drug-free society.
