Accessible critical care

The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) is on the path toward improving patient outcomes through the decentralization of critical care, including the establishment of mini-ICUs and High Dependency Units (HDUs) within the ward areas, so that patients can receive life-saving interventions immediately, without the delays associated with transferring patients, which reinforces SKIMS’ commitment to providing timely, high-quality emergency care for all of its patients.

This new strategy is an important change for how tertiary care can be delivered, as rather than centrally locating the resources necessary for critical care, SKIMS is now bringing the setting of critical care to where the patients are located.

As Director of SKIMS has stated that If and when a patient’s condition continues to deteriorate, they can be provided with management of their condition immediately in the ward, which decreases the associated risk of transporting unstable patients to another location.

In addition to transferring patients more quickly to specialized care locations, the ability to extend the ‘Golden Hour’ of recovery opportunity will be maximized.

With this upgrade, the institution is significantly expanding its reach and capabilities.

In addition to upgrading the wards, SKIMS is also investing in the development of its infrastructure with advanced surgical and monitoring technologies, thereby ensuring that the technology provided by SKIMS matches the commitment and dedication of the SKIMS staff.

An initiative that will change how critical patients are treated and cared for. It’s an initiative that empowers both the patient and the caregiver by placing their needs and well-being as the top priority in the provision of care.

SKIMS’ commitment to providing better quality care at the ward level has laid the foundation for future advancements in healthcare facilities and will serve as a model of success for other healthcare organizations within the region.

This provides the opportunity for hospitals to provide more timely access to advanced medical care, ultimately, enhancing the quality of life of all citizens and providing greater opportunities for our future generations.
