196 licences face suspension: MVD
SRINAGAR, APRIL 06: In a major enforcement drive across Kashmir division, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) blacklisted 124 vehicles on the spot and recommended suspension of 196 driving licences, while collecting ₹18.56 lakh in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act on Monday.
A total of 822 violators were challaned during the drive, which was carried out across all districts to enforce traffic rules and enhance road safety.
The operation was conducted at key locations, including high-traffic zones and accident-prone areas, under the supervision of the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Kashmir, with overall monitoring by the Transport Commissioner, J&K.
Special enforcement teams checked violations such as driving without valid licences, overloading, non-use of seat belts and helmets, use of mobile phones while driving, and non-compliance with emission norms.
Meanwhile, in Srinagar, Traffic Police launched a parallel special drive targeting the use of pressure horns and high-beam projector lights, impounding several vehicles for violations.
Officials said the action focuses on curbing excessive noise and visibility hazards, particularly during evening and night hours. Vehicles fitted with illegal pressure horns and unauthorised high-intensity lights are being intercepted at multiple checkpoints across the city.
Police said the use of such devices is prohibited due to their impact on public safety, including noise disturbance and glare affecting oncoming drivers. The drive is ongoing, with intensified checks expected across different parts of Srinagar.
Officials said the broader enforcement initiative aims to instil discipline among motorists and reduce road accidents across the region.
The department has urged the public to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement agencies. More such drives are planned in the coming weeks as part of a sustained campaign to improve road safety across Kashmir.
