Mughal Road closed for traffic

Sgr-Jmu NH open

Srinagar, Jan 1: Following fresh snowfall on Thursday, authorities have temporarily closed the Mughal Road as a precautionary measure, officials said.

The road, which connects Shopian district of south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Jammu region, was closed after snowfall at Peer Ki Gali.

Officials said that traffic movement on Mughal Road has been completely suspended due to fresh snowfall, which has made the stretch slippery and unsafe for vehicular movement. The closure has been enforced to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of travellers.

People have been advised to avoid travelling on Mughal Road until the road is cleared of snow and declared passable by the authorities. Snow clearance operations will be taken up once weather conditions improve, officials said.

The Mughal Road often witnesses temporary closures during winter due to snowfall at higher reaches, particularly around Peer Ki Gali, which remains vulnerable to heavy snow accumulation and poor visibility.

Authorities said updates regarding the reopening of the road will be shared once conditions improve and traffic movement is restored.

The Traffic Police Headquarters J&K on Thursday issued a traffic plan and advisory for January 2, 2026, citing slow vehicular movement and multiple road closures due to fresh snowfall across several stretches.

According to the advisory, slow movement was observed on the NH-44 due to single-lane traffic at Ballanalla, Dewal, Nashri Dalwas and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather. The situation was further impacted by the breakdown of two heavy motor vehicles on the highway.

Passenger and light motor vehicle operators have been advised to prefer travel on the Jammu Srinagar highway during daytime hours and avoid night travel, as movement of heavy motor vehicles between Nashri tunnel and Navyug tunnel may cause inconvenience to commuters.

Authorities have urged commuters to strictly follow lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to congestion.

Subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, light motor vehicles, passenger vehicles and private cars will be allowed to ply from both sides on NH-44. The Traffic Police said traffic movement will be regulated in coordination with the Traffic Control Unit Ramban.

Security Forces convoy movement on the Jammu Srinagar highway will also be permitted from both sides, subject to fair weather and road conditions, after confirmation from TCU Ramban.
