The grave is a lonely resting place where a person will be left with nothing but their deeds. There will be no voices, no support, no glitter, no glamour. There will be no mother’s love, no father’s protection, no children’s affection, and no friends to stand by. It will only be the person and the record of what they earned through their actions. Allah Almighty reminds us in the Holy Quran, “Every soul shall taste death, and you will be paid your full reward on the Day of Resurrection.” (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 185). Today, we are busy chasing wealth, fame, and power, caught up in the race of this world. But we must pause and ask ourselves: Will these luxuries help us in the loneliness of the grave? Will mansions, luxury cars, expensive clothes, or social media fame light up the darkness there? The answer is no, absolutely not.
Allah has warned us clearly in the Quran: “He will say, ‘My Lord, send me back so that I may do good in that which I have left behind.’ No! It is but a word he says; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.” (Surah Al-Mu’minun: 99-100). When the soul leaves the body, the door of repentance is closed forever. No one will be given another chance, and no more good deeds can be done. It is sad how easily we forget that the true wealth is righteousness, piety, service to humanity, and the pleasure of Allah. Everything else will be left behind. What will go with us are only three things: our faith, our deeds, and our character. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except for three: a charity that continues to benefit, knowledge that is used, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (Sahih Muslim).
This Hadith makes us think deeply: Have we prepared any ongoing charity for ourselves? Have we shared any knowledge that benefits others even after we are gone? Have we raised our children in a way that they will pray for us after our death? The grave is where we will see the result of our own deeds. Allah says in the Quran, “And every soul will be fully compensated for what it did; and He is most knowing of what they do.” (Surah Az-Zumar: 70). If today we keep our hands away from oppression, guard our tongues from lies, and clean our hearts from jealousy and hatred, these actions will accompany us in our grave. If not, there will be nothing but regret and sorrow.
We must realize that feeding the hungry is like lighting a lamp for ourselves in the grave. Comforting an orphan can bring coolness and peace to our resting place. Hiding someone’s faults will bring the shade of Allah’s mercy over us. Allah promises in the Quran, “Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great success.” (Surah At-tawbah: 72). So while we still have time, while the pen is still writing, and while our book of deeds is still open, we must fill it with actions that will become light, comfort, and peace for us in our graves. Otherwise, there will be nothing but deep regret when the angels say, “Today your deeds have been laid bare before you. Now you will reap what you have sown.”
We must ask ourselves: Is my life pleasing to Allah? Have my hands reached out to help someone? Has my tongue comforted someone in pain? Has my wealth supported those in need? If we do not have a clear answer, then we must know that the time to act is now. Let us make an intention today that we will not deceive, lie, or oppress. Instead, we will spread love, show mercy, support the truth, and stand for what is right. Because when the colors of this world fade away, and when the silence of the grave calls us, only our good deeds will remain by our side. May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to perform righteous deeds and prepare for our final journey. Ameen.
