Srinagar: National Conference General Secretary and MLA from Khanyar, Ali Muhammad Sagar Tuesday made a fervent appeal to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to reinstate December 5 as a public holiday commemorating the birth anniversary of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
Describing Sheikh Abdullah as an unparalleled leader in Jammu and Kashmir’s history, Sagar underscored the imperative of paying tribute to his monumental contributions to the region’s social and political landscape. Sheikh Abdullah’s visionary leadership awakened the people from centuries of servitude, championing dignity, democratic rights and social justice.
“Sher-e-Kashmir was a beacon of hope against despair, tirelessly advocating for the people’s rights and freedoms. His selfless sacrifices paved the way for a prosperous future,” Sagar stated.
Highlighting the enduring relevance of Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy, Sagar pointed to the recent elections, demonstrating the NC’s continued resonance with the people. Reinstating the holiday would honor Sheikh Abdullah’s contributions, recognize the people’s sacrifices and strengthen democratic institutions.
“Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah remains the guiding light for Jammu and Kashmir. His values and vision steer this troubled land toward prosperity. Ignoring his contributions denies the people their rightful heritage,” Sagar said.
He urged the government to act promptly, stressing that respecting Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy is a matter of historical justice, recognizing the unshakable bond between him and the people.
