MoD signs Rs 802 cr contracts for military equipment

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence has announced the signing of two significant contracts valued at Rs 802 Crores for the procurement of military equipment, furthering the commitment to bolster indigenous manufacturing and enhance the role of the private sector in defence production. The contracts were signed on January 4, 2024, in New Delhi under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

The first contract, worth Rs 473 Crores, involves the procurement of 697 Bogie Open Military (BOM) Wagons from M/s Jupiter Wagons Limited. These wagons, designed by the Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO), are specialized for the Indian Army’s mobilization needs, transporting light vehicles, artillery guns, BMPs, and engineering equipment. The BOM Wagons play a crucial role in facilitating the rapid and simultaneous induction of military units and equipment into operational areas during conflicts. Additionally, they support peacetime movements for military exercises and the relocation of units between stations.

The second contract, valued at Rs 329 Crores, is for the procurement of 56 Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II from M/s BEML Ltd. The MMME is a vital component for marking all minefields, aligning with the mandatory requirements outlined in the amended Protocol-II on the Convention in certain Conventional Weapons, to which India is a signatory. The MMME has been designed to operate cross-country with a full load of stores, expediting the minefield marking process during operations. It utilizes advanced mechanical and electrical systems, contributing to a reduction in timing and manpower requirements. The MMME’s deployment enhances the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.

Both procurement contracts underscore the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, emphasizing self-reliance in defence production and fostering the active participation of the private sector. The use of indigenous manufacturers for equipment and sub-systems further strengthens the nation’s defence capabilities and aligns with the broader goals of advancing self-sufficiency in the defence sector.
