Srinagar: As snow drapes the far flung areas of Kashmir in icy silence, the subsidized helicopter services provided by the government not only carry passengers, but also provide essential services and connect the inhabitants of snowbound hamlets to the outside world.
For centuries, residents of Kashmir’s remote, snowbound areas have grappled with the harsh realities of winter. Cut off by impassable roads and treacherous mountain passes, access to healthcare, emergency services, and even basic necessities becomes a struggle. However, in recent years, a unique initiative has offered a ray of hope – subsidized helicopter services operated by the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
An official while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The helicopter service in winter months reaches districts like Bandipora and Kupwara.”
Notably, during the winter months, when temperatures plummet and snowfall renders ground travel impossible, these helicopters become the only reliable mode of transport for these far flung areas.
“The impact of this initiative is immeasurable. Previously, a medical emergency in Gurez could turn fatal simply due to the lack of timely treatment. Now, critical patients can be airlifted to hospitals in Srinagar within hours, saving countless lives. Emergency supplies, from medicines to food, can also be rapidly delivered, ensuring the well-being of isolated communities,” the official said, adding, “The service is not just about emergencies. It makes the essential services and administration accessible to people. The psychological boost of knowing they are not entirely cut off from the world is equally significant for these remote communities living in mountains.”
The heli-services operate through a network of landing pads established in key locations, ensuring easy access for residents. Bookings are handled through officials and designated nodal officers, guaranteeing transparency and equitable distribution of resources. “To ensure affordability, the government heavily subsidizes the fares, making them accessible even for low-income families,” the official added.
According to the officials weather conditions sometimes disrupt operations and it becomes imperative to ensure efficient deployment of helicopters. “It requires careful coordination. Expanding the program to cover more districts and improving infrastructure at landing pads are also key goals,” they added.
Despite these challenges, the Kashmir administration’s subsidized helicopter service stands as a testament to its commitment to serving its people, regardless of the terrain or season. It is a powerful example of innovation in governance, bridging the gap between isolated communities and essential services.
As the winter sun casts long shadows across the snow-covered valleys, the whirring blades of these helicopters carry more than just passengers; they carry the promise of a future where no Kashmiri, however remote their location, feels truly stranded.
During the recently held review meeting in Srinagar, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, V K Bidhuri directed concerned Deputy Commissioners to ensure smooth operations of the services and ensure timely help to people in need. He also instructed them to widely publicize and notify fares and timings at prominent locations such as hospitals and bus stands. “This service is not just about transportation; it’s a beacon of hope for the community, promising convenience and swift assistance during emergencies,” the Divisional Commissioner said.
