J&K’s economy shows signs of growth, stability as tourists rediscover pristine destination

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a remarkable revival of tourism industry in recent years, bringing with it a much-needed economic boost.
According to the tourism stakeholders, J&K’s once-struggling economy is now showing signs of growth and stability as the tourists are rediscovering the beauty and culture of this pristine destination.
“ Tourists were often hesitant to visit due to safety concerns. However, the situation has improved in recent years, and the region is gradually regaining its reputation as a top travel destination,” hotelier Farooq Ahmed told Precious Kashmir.
He said, “The beautiful landscapes, pristine lakes, lush valleys, and picturesque mountains have lured travelers from all over the world. The improvement in the security situation has played a crucial role in rebuilding the confidence of tourists.”
An official said, “The government has invested in upgrading infrastructure, including better road networks, hotels, and recreational facilities, which have improved the overall tourism experience.”
“Initiatives to promote local culture, art, and cuisine have made the region even more attractive to tourists. Festivals, handicraft exhibitions, and cultural events have become integral parts of the tourism calendar,” he added.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir’s eco-friendly initiatives, such as trekking, wildlife safaris, and adventure sports, have drawn adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts to the region.
According to the stakeholders the resurgence of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir has had a profound impact on the regional economy. “The tourism industry has created thousands of jobs, directly and indirectly, in the region. This has reduced unemployment and improved the standard of living for many residents,” they added.
“Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, have thrived with the influx of tourists. The demand for local handicrafts, such as Pashmina shawls and saffron, has risen substantially,” they said.
Pertinently, the increase in tourism has prompted investments in infrastructure development, benefiting the overall economy. The construction industry has experienced a significant boost. “The tourism industry has generated substantial revenue for the government through taxes and fees. This income can be reinvested in the development of the region,” said an official.
A travel agent said, “As the winter is approaching we are hoping to have a good season as the bookings have started pouring in early. All efforts are being put in to project Kashmir as a favourite winter tourist destination. Arrival of foreign tourists this year has brightened the chances of foreigners visiting Kashmir this winter.”
According to the observers the outlook for tourism in Kashmir is positive, with continued efforts to make the region more tourist-friendly and safe. The government’s commitment to sustainable development and the unique attractions of the region will likely keep the tourism industry on an upward trajectory.
