Establishes counseling centers, invests in equipping healthcare personnel with necessary skills
Srinagar: In recent years, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been grappling with a growing mental health crisis.
Experts while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “The region’s volatile situation and traumatic experiences have left a deep impact on the mental well-being of its residents.”
They said, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are facing numerous mental health issues. Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse are prevalent among the population. Many factors have taken a heavy toll on the mental health of the region’s inhabitants.”
Acknowledging the severity of the crisis, the J&K government has prioritized mental health as a key area of focus. One of the notable steps has been the establishment of counseling centers and mental health facilities across the region. These centers serve as safe spaces for individuals to seek help and receive counseling from qualified professionals.
According to the officials the government has also launched mobile mental health units that travel to remote and inaccessible areas. These units provide vital services such as counseling, psychoeducation, and case management, reaching those who may otherwise have limited or no access to mental health support.
“Another important initiative taken by the government is the training of healthcare professionals in mental health. Recognizing the shortage of specialists in the field, the government has invested in equipping existing healthcare personnel with the necessary skills to identify and address mental health issues. This training includes various aspects of mental health, ranging from identification and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care. By building the capacity of healthcare providers, the government aims to enhance the mental health infrastructure of the region,” said an official.
In addition to direct interventions, the government has also launched awareness campaigns to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. These campaigns aim to educate the public about mental health, promote understanding and empathy, and encourage individuals to seek help without fear of judgment or discrimination. The government has collaborated with local NGOs and community leaders to ensure the success of these campaigns and to foster a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues.
“The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the situation with increased rates of stress, anxiety, and depression,” said an expert.
“Despite these challenges, the steps taken by the government in recent years are commendable. The initiatives to establish counseling centers, mobile mental health units, and the training of healthcare professionals reflect a commitment to prioritize mental health in the region. Increased awareness and sensitization efforts have the potential to change attitudes and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” he said, and added, “With a multi-faceted approach that includes improved infrastructure, increased access to mental health services, and ongoing awareness campaigns, the government is striving to create a supportive environment where individuals can receive the care they need to rebuild their lives and regain their mental well-being.”
