‘Degree alone no guarantee for successful career, practical skills important to scale heights’

Srinagar: The system must adapt to meet the demands of the changing times as the advancement of technology and the demand for specialized skills have changed the very concept of education, experts said on Thursday.
A renowned professor while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “Colleges and universities have been left with no other option other than to reevaluate their curriculum. More than degrees skills and values have become important in today’s world. Gone are the days when a degree alone could guarantee a successful career. Today’s job market demands a workforce equipped with an array of practical skills that are crucial for individuals to remain competitive. Employers value skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. These have become essential for adapting to a dynamic working environment that requires constant innovation and flexibility.”
Industry experts emphasize that while theoretical knowledge is important, it must be complemented by real-world skills. As a result, colleges and universities are now under pressure to reassess their course offerings and incorporate classes that prepare students for the ever-changing job market. “They must prioritize teaching skills that are directly applicable to the needs of the industry, ensuring graduates are job-ready upon completion of their programs.
Moreover, as our society becomes increasingly interconnected and diverse, the importance of values has taken center stage. In an era marked by environmental, social, and ethical challenges, institutions of higher education must emphasize the development of values such as empathy, cultural understanding, and sustainability. Students who possess these values are better equipped to navigate complex issues and contribute positively to their communities,” opined a businessman.
An educationist said, “It is crucial to note that the responsibility of equipping students with relevant skills and values does not solely rest upon academic institutions. Society as a whole must recognize and value the importance of skills and values, encouraging students to pursue a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional subjects. It is commonly argued that certain subjects deemed irrelevant in today’s world should be phased out from academic curricula due to limited resources and high costs associated with teaching them. This argument is not unfounded. For instance, some subjects taught for purely historical purposes, with little or no practical applicability, can be seen as outdated in today’s fast-paced world.”
He said, “ Instead, students should focus on acquiring skills such as computer programming, data analysis, and digital literacy that are in high demand across industries. Additionally, subjects such as critical thinking and ethics should be incorporated into the curriculum to help students navigate complex ethical dilemmas.”
“Colleges and universities should collaborate with industries to develop internships and create partnerships that provide students with practical experience. By doing so, students can gain exposure to real-world scenarios and develop the skills required to excel in their chosen fields,” he added.
