Srinagar, June 21: COVID-19 is on the verge of becoming endemic, according to Indian scientists, but the government remains vigilant in monitoring new variants and maintaining a high alert.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has emphasized that while the virus has managed to survive and will continue to do so, the situation is currently stable after more than three years of one of the worst pandemics the world has ever witnessed. However, the government will continue to take all necessary measures to prevent any potentially deadly variant from spreading.
Pertinently, the COVID-19 virus was initially detected in China in late 2019 and reached India in late January 2020.
Since then, the country has reported close to 4.5 crore (45 million) positive cases and witnessed over five lakh (500,000) deaths during multiple waves of the pandemic.
“Amidst the evolving landscape of the pandemic, Indian scientists have been closely monitoring each new variant that emerges. Variants such as the Delta variant, which was first identified in India and later became dominant worldwide, have posed significant challenges. These variants have shown increased transmissibility and, in some cases, resistance to existing treatments and vaccines,” said an expert.
He said, “Maintaining a high alert level is crucial to mitigate the risk of any variant that may pose a threat to public health. All the healthcare resources, including hospital beds, medical supplies, and vaccines should be kept available till the virus becomes a history.”
He said, “Public health campaigns and awareness initiatives should continue to make people aware about the importance of adhering to safety protocols, such as wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and getting vaccinated.”
It’s in place to mention here that the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals, frontline workers, and citizens in combating the pandemic were commendable. Their dedication and sacrifice played a significant role in reducing the impact of the virus. The fight against COVID-19 is not yet over and everyone should remain vigilant.
A medico said, “As the virus approaches endemicity, the focus should shift from containment to long-term management. Efforts should be directed towards achieving a balance between controlling the spread of the virus and allowing socioeconomic activities to resume safely. Synergy among the various sectors, including education, tourism, and businesses, holds the key to implement guidelines and protocols that enable a gradual return to normalcy.”
He said, “While COVID-19 is on the brink of becoming endemic the cooperation and adherence of citizens to safety protocols remain vital in managing the virus and transitioning to a post-pandemic era.”
