Centre urges States to curb hoarding

New Delhi: The Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas today chaired a high-level meeting with Additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries (Food & Civil Supplies) of States and Union Territories to review the fuel supply situation across the country amid evolving demand conditions.

The Secretary briefed the States and UTs on measures taken by the Central Government to ease the availability of essential petroleum products and maintain supply stability. He also appreciated the coordinated efforts of States in managing distribution and responding to emerging challenges.

Emphasising the need for proactive management, the Secretary directed States and UTs to prioritise LPG distribution to ensure uninterrupted supply to domestic consumers and essential sectors. He called for strict vigilance against hoarding, diversion and the spread of misinformation that could trigger panic among the public.

Several States, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, were commended for undertaking enforcement actions such as raids to curb irregularities. Other States were advised to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and take stringent action against violators.

Addressing concerns over LPG availability for migrant workers, the States clarified that supplies remain stable with no reported disruptions. The Secretary suggested that States may consider targeted distribution of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders based on local demand, in coordination with Oil Marketing Companies.

On LPG usage in the transport sector, it was noted that efforts are underway to meet demand. The Secretary advised that vehicles capable of running on both LPG and petrol should be encouraged to use petrol to ease pressure on LPG supplies.

Reiterating the importance of Centre-State coordination, the Secretary called for continued close monitoring of supply chains to ensure stability and sustain public confidence.
