Addressing the drug problem in Jammu and Kashmir has become one of the top priorities. The destructive impact of addiction on the youth, families, and society in general needs to be brought to action, and with it, some immediate urgent and continued action.
The IEC campaign, as part of the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan, is one of the mechanisms to help develop community awareness and understand the threat of drug abuse to the future public health of the region.
With enforcement and rehab providing the scientific standard framework as to how Nasha Mukt Abhiyan can be operated, the IEC implementation is the base on which to provide prevention activities.
Youth often find themselves using substances based on misinformation, peer interest, and lack of awareness. An effective IEC program can help smash through myths, educate communities about the devastation of drug use, and help shape positive cognitive behaviour change in communities.
The campaign can station effectiveness beyond the hospital. There is much more than just printing some pamphlets and setting up seminars. The campaign is going to need to engage fully with all the different variations of digital media, involve local involvement or local messaging, and branch out to engage in as many ways as possible, especially to youth.
Engagement or activities on the ground at colleges, schools, and nearly youth-oriented initiatives should include interactive workshops, debates, and presentations of programs led by peer youth.
Involving influencers, athletes, and role models will play a major role in enhancing the advocacy. Conversation forums on social and economic impacts should be created at the grassroots level, include Panchayats, religious leaders, and NGO’s. The use of digital and social media mobilization and infographics in local languages can certainly provide an antidote to the pro-drug messaging occurring online, where most of the youth’s exposure is reality located.
Introducing counselling services widely available, as well as anonymous helplines would help to mitigate the stigma of seeking assistance, for both the addict and the families of the addict.
The IEC campaign should not work in a vacuum. The engagement of the little and larger spaces for intervention as listed above, can be meaningfully intertwined with the IEC campaign to create an ecosystem holistic approach towards drug-free J&K.
The IEC campaign under Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan is not about just raising awareness, but is about protecting lives and preserving the futures of the region.
By creating innovative, inclusive, and recurring forms of communication, we will help communities reject substance use, and embrace healthy and prosperous alternatives to living.
