Srinagar: The people of Kashmir have yet again set an example of unparalleled hospitality by opening their homes to stranded tourists after a heavy and unpredicted snowfall.
As the region was hit by an intense snowstorm that the Meteorological Department failed to forecast, many tourists found themselves stuck in risky situations. Blocked roads, canceled flights, and freezing temperatures left visitors stranded, unprepared, and without shelter in several areas, including Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.
Unlike the distressing stories of harassment faced by several Kashmiris elsewhere as per recent media reports, the people of the valley showed remarkable generosity. The residents opened their homes, unlocked mosques, providing food, warmth, and comfort to stranded tourists.
In some cases as seen on social media, families gave up their own rooms for visitors who were left without accommodation due to the sudden weather conditions.
“We were completely unprepared for this level of snowfall. Our hotel was overbooked, and there was no way to get to the airport,” said Aarti Mishra, a tourist from Delhi.
She said but a local family took us in. They treated us like one of their own, sharing food and making sure we were warm and comfortable.”
Several tourists shared their experiences, highlighting the stark contrast between the warmth they received in Kashmir and the treatment often meted out to Kashmiri traders in other parts of India.
One user wrote, “Kashmiris are showing what true hospitality means by welcoming stranded tourists into their homes. We have so much to learn from them.”
Another post read, “Kashmiris have hearts as warm as their kangris. Despite their own challenges, they never fail to extend a helping hand.” (ANB)
